Revolutionary?

Fad is a better word.

BullyMangler4078d ago

dont be upset . . Metroid Other M and Skyward Sword proved the wii revolution to be correct .. .

Kur04078d ago

Skyward Sword was fun but Other M was awful.

Perjoss4078d ago

Don't be shy, those aren't the only amazing games on the Wii. Although I cannot comment on Other M as I have never played it, but there's plenty of other really good Metroid games on the system anyway. Lets not forget stuff like Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade and Monster Hunter.

you have to understand the difference between evolutionary and revolutionary. An example of an evolutionary system would be like the NES to the SNES or PS1 to PS2.

Those are systems that capitalized on their previous releases but also improved significantly. Hence...they evolved into something better than the previous system.

An example of revolutionary would be introducing new ways to play. Be it in the media type (going from cartridge to CD/DVD) or in the actual control scheme. Meaning from traditional buttons and d-pad to the more interactive full body (kinect) or arm moving (wiimote/move) type in interface.

Wii did revolutionize gaming on the one hand but it too was an evolution to gaming as well. I would venture the next big revolutionary movement in gaming would be something VR-like. Being more immersed within the game. We are many years away from "holo-deck" type of gaming but with new VR headsets and projection systems it may not be as far away as we think.

.
you see, when one is grateful, you can enjoy the most subatomic particles .

Metroid Other M going from side scroller to 1st person is not a change, but innovation at its finest <

If you dont enjoy the fact that going from side scroller to 1st person with the the simple aim of the wii mote, then you will keep living your life always nitpicking and wanting more, never enjoying the moment to the fullest . . TODAYS SWEET FACT IS > metroid other M's gameplay and mechanics is a huge leap in videogame history and dynamics. dont just read a review and think, oh neh, this review gave it an 8/10, i wont get it . .dont be a goomba, some people want the big N to faiL. so just play games and do your own judging .

also i dont understand how if wii was a gimmick, how mario galaxy 2 and skyward sword have been PROVEN to be the real deaL in motion controlls.. MadWorld uses motion controls in a very gimmicky way though. lets not confuse the gimmicks with the jewels . .

wildcat4078d ago

PS1 revolutionized gaming as a whole because it introduced CD's and it became a standard.

Xbox Live revolutionized console gaming because its now a staple for consoles to have a dedicated online network.

While the Wii revolutionized the traditional approach to console gaming, motion controls did not become a standard. They are an optional add-on to the core console.

I don't know. Maybe I'm speaking too soon before MS and Sony show their consoles, but to me it looks like motion controllers and devices will never be a standard.

darthv724077d ago

your assessment of the PS1 is a bit confused. PS1 didnt revolutionize gaming because of the CD. That had already been established from the likes of Philips, NEC, Sega and even Commodore (if you can believe that).

PS1 revolutionized gaming by taking it out of the shadows of being related to only "kids" playing games. It revolutionized the concept that adults could be entertained by gaming as well. There is such a diverse library of titles that appealed to all demographics of people not just 'core' gamers.

in short, PS1 holds the distinction of making gaming "cool" for everyone. That was a big revolutionary moment that even the likes of Atari, nintendo and Sega had been trying to crack for years prior.

wildcat4077d ago

Yeah, that was a poor claim but I was very young when the PS1 launched.

Still, I strongly believe being innovative is one thing and being revolutionary is another. Wii innovated traditional approaches in consoles, focusing on controls instead of power. But when you look at the gaming world as a whole, the advent of motion controls did not really stick, nor did it push for a strong demand of games which used its technology.

The most anticipated games are still ones with standard remote controls and people are still excited for more power and better graphics in PS4 and 720. Move and Kinect don't really have powerful games that people are yearning to play.

I think Wii revolutionized the way gaming is viewed for some, but it didn't radically alter the way the majority of games will be played. It was a short-lived revolution, a powerful trend as someone said down there.

Yep. Wii fizzled out pretty hard, just like all fads do.

And it wasn't much of a revolution, considering nobody really cares about motion controls anymore.

Ripsta7th4077d ago

is that why the wii sold like crazy, coming out in 1st place, same with kinect. So nobody realy cares about motion controls anymore? Is that why the rumored ps4 controller supposedly has built it move??? Or what about the nextbox with an upgraded kinect??

Good_Guy_Jamal4078d ago

I'm inclined to listen more to the developer who has several award winning GAMES under his belt than some random guy on a website who probably doesn't take too well to people saying kind things about a console not made by the console maker he favours. . But thats just me.

wildcat4077d ago

Fair enough.

I do favor MS and Sony for sure because they employ the developers that make the games which appeal to me. I do have many positive things to say about the Wii, but not as a platform which moved gaming in the direction I prefer.

Hicken4077d ago

Sounds like you're describing yourself, there.

Given the ridiculously steep drop-off (after the ridiculously high initial start) that the Wii has seen, is "fad" not a word that could be used?

As for it being "revolutionary," that depends on how prominent a presence motion gaming has in the upcoming generation.

phantomexe4078d ago

fad?? looking at all next gen consuls and current. I think it's safe to say it was not. I don't like the wii controller ether but give credit where credit is due. Hate it all you want sony and MS are following suit.

wildcat4078d ago

Perhaps it wasn't a fad, that was a twitch response. And it did change the way people play video games and made Sony and Microsoft invest in their own motion control devices.

With all that said, however, the excitement for motion controls will not carry over into next gen. Nintendo's revolutionary concept of focusing not on power or graphics, but on innovative control schemes only changed the landscape of this gaming generation.

Gaming still relies on new and better technology: advanced graphics, higher definition picture, etc... From this stance, Wii didn't really revolutionize gaming because the traditional approach of investing in more power and capabilities is still the best way to stay relevant.

Knushwood Butt4077d ago

Last time I checked, PS3 had motion control built in from the start, and was released before the Wii.

Remember Flower? That game made by the Journey creator? Yeah? It was played with sixaxis motion control.

Ripsta7th4077d ago

Yet Sony keet coming out with their own versions of "fad"
PS Move
Touchpad Control

Knushwood Butt4077d ago

So true.

I managed to skip ever owning a Wii, and still game every day. I don't feel like I missed out on anything revolutionary.

Oh yeah, I did play Mario Galaxy at a friend's house, and used waggle to spin up and down a few vines. I guess that was revolutionary /s

No more gimmick centered consoles? Good.

Trago13374078d ago

Well, it DID introduce new ways to play video games. The problem is that no one but Nintendo implemented motion controls for the better, 'cept maybe Ubisoft with Red Steel 2.

While i agree with him to some degree, i believe that next gen consoles can bring something new to the table in terms of gameplay.

For example. More processing power will help improve Physics and Animations, and AI. If developers can use these to their full potential, we could get more games like L.A. Noire, or Portal, instead of Realistic shooters.

ShugaCane4078d ago

Your talent is the only thing that matters. Just sync it with the technological enchancements next gen will provide and you'll see people won't need any revolution.
