Has The Year of The PS3 Really Come?

GamerFitNation: Early on in the beginning on PS3′s lifecycle fans and gaming enthusiasts were proclaiming that the year of the PS3 hasn’t come. Well six years and many months later the PS3 is still here and kicking strong. It was just announced in a report from Games Industry International last month that the PS3 has finally passed the Xbox in shipped units. Well according to the global hardware totals on VGchartz the Xbox360 has a 1.4m advantage in terms of sales.

2009-2013 it's been a long year of the PS3. In my opinion it's been on the ball for all that time and will continue so for a few years yet. That's no slight on the competition just an observation on PS3s performance.

"The Year of Console X" is pretty subjective imo.

If you are looking at variety/quality of software vs. sales vs. # of apps. vs profit, etc etc.

I'm sure PS3 has had a year or two in one category or another already. Same could be said for other consoles.

Plus, if PS4 is announced. I think this year will be overshadowed by the upcoming new consoles from Sony/MS. It really won't be so centered around 7th generation consoles.

I agree and in one way or another my PS3 has delivered and kept me happy for a lot of years.

New consoles or not there's still a slew of great games hitting current gen consoles and I won't pass them by, even if I get a PS4.

lol every year is supposed to be the year of the PS3 and it hasn't happened yet. I remember last year how 2012 was supposed to be said year, and all we got out of it was a 2 hour game!

The beginning of the year always looks promising, but somehow the Xbox 360 or PC always pull out ahead in the end.

I'm gonna come out and say 2014 will be the year of the PS3.

You can spin it how you want, but there has been a good offering every year as far as exclusive games go for PS3. The media tried to downplay the games, saying there were none, but.. there were. You say 360 only had one bad year? I couldn't care less about that, because you go on to use that to assume that PS3 has had several bad years, which I can only put down to you being insane or completely ignorant to what actually has come out each year for PS3.

People like you obsess over what fanboys are saying yet you're fanboys yourselves. And you know what? The lists are not always right. But look at 2008: MotorStorm Pacific Rift, Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Valkyria Chronicles (AMAZING), and one of the best survival horror games in years in Siren: Blood Curse. Awesome lineup.

2009: inFamous, Demon's Souls, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time. Even better. Sensational lineup there. Definitely platform of the year that year.

2010: Heavy Rain, God of War 3, 3D Dot Game Heroes, Gran Turismo 5 and more. That's great.

2013: Just look... Ni no Kuni, The Last of Us, God of War Ascension, Beyond: Two Souls, Puppeteer, Until Dawn. Why would you not consider that a potential platform of the year contender? It's the PS3's best lineup in years and it's amazing.

2011: Uncharted 3 (GOTY Contender), Infamous 2, Killzone 3, LittleBigPlanet 2, Motorstorm Apocalypse, Resistance 3, Yakuza 4 (NA and Europe) etc.

That was also an epic year for PS3. lol

Thats where i stopped reading. Every site that thinks vgchartz is even remotely reliable doesnt deserve a hit. Its a site set up by a angry 360 fanboy that got kicked off neogaf for making up bullshit sales numbers.

Sony's network been shaping up to give Live! a run for its money (pun intended) on every single front.

Exclusive titels can get you sales of course (either game or console wise) but in the end, it's all about the money!

Talking to a brick wall Sagapo. Sony is currently selling off parts of the company to avoid going out of business and some still think sales don't matter.

I imagine 30 years from now, some of those same people will be older and wondering what ever happened to Sony. I never understood that.

But are we Sony? Or are we consumers interested in the product Sony puts on the market? I know which one I am, and I know what's most important to me.

Sony's not where they once were, but nor are they going out of business. They sold a building and tripled their investment; if they were selling off DIVISIONS, you might be on to something.

But given this is AFTER they've started restructuring the company- which would include things like selling assets, which is what the ONE event you're referring to counts as- it's hardly an indication of anything as dire as them going out of business.

I've noticed you have a tendency to try and shift the conversation whenever Sony is involved. Instead of addressing the actual subject- games should be the most important to us- you go off the deep end.

Sagapo is only partially right. Sales can't be the only thing that matters, not in what's essentially a service-based industry like gaming. I mean, would you rather have 2 million sales at $10, or 500K in sales at $60?

Obviously, you want people to spend more money with you; to do that, you need to make a product people WANT. Create different exclusives that cater to a wide variety of people, and you'll still make your money.

Just won't be off one or two titles.

People still talking about that "one report" from IDK stating that the PS3 passed the 360.

PS3 was behind the 360 by millions before the holiday and the 360 sold close to 6 million consoles this holiday I doubt Sony cought up to MSFT before the holiday and then matched the 360's 6 million consoles sold during the holiday.

There is a reason Sony hasn't released press statements left and right about PS3 passing the 360.

Year of the PS3 hasn't come yet. PS3 had no games(core blockbuster exclusives) last year for the holidays.

Now before the bogus IDK report, PS3 fanboys where using VGC to back up their claims the PS3 was outselling the 360 wordwide yet they show 360 still ahead. Now Sony fans believe some random report from IDK that single handedly crushes the credibility of both.

IDK showed no real source or proof for their tracking method

VGC is under tracking the 360's lead and faslely/mistakenly giving PS3 victories in monthly global sales I bet.

I'm just saying here about the sales of this gen.
I'm not using VGChartz, I'm using wikipedia.
IDC reported that the PS3 shipped 77 millions compare to 360 shipped 76 millions. Microsoft announce that they have shipped 76 millions as of Feb 2013. Sony is still in 70 millions as of Sept. of 2012. They haven't announce their numbers yet. I do believe PS3 has surpass the 360 and the reason they haven't announce yet is probably because they are waiting for a specific day, maybe the 20th of this month.

i dont care, for me every year is PS3 year cause for me variety in what i'm playing is the most important thing.

Ni no Kuni then God of War then The Sly Cooper then The Last of Us are 4 major exclusives from this year and each one of them is so different from the other one.

Some people just cannot accept the fact that PS3 passing 360 in global hardware was inetvitable, and that when it happened it was a coronation not a celebratory victory. It was expected. Started a year later and outsold the 360 every year.

Now we have ppl in denial who cannot accept the last place finish of the 360.

Ps3 has had wonderful years after 07. Best exclusives and tons and tons of content. PS+ is awesome and the free online continues to rock on. PS3 was a truly great machine. 360 was great too, just not as great.

It already came in 09, 10, 11, and 12 but yes with god of war, beyond, ninokuni, sly, last of us, and puppeteer it shall be
