What Will the Next PlayStation Be Called?

Push Square: "The number four is unlucky in Japan. The figure is pronounced “shi” in the land of the rising sun, which is the same as the word for death. As a result, many hospitals prefer to ignore the digit, skipping the integer when naming room and floor numbers. Furthermore, there are no seats with the numeral on passenger planes of the All Nippon Airways, the nation’s largest airline. The question is: could superstition play a part in the naming of the next PlayStation?"

it will surely be called a next gen console

MikeMyers4082d ago

If it's not the PS4 or Playstation 4 then that means the Japanese company is still too entrenched in Japanese tradition and superstitions.

Bathyj4082d ago

I've been spelling it PS FWOAR!

darthv724082d ago

sony break the numbering tradition. Call it anything but PS4 but at least make it a cool sounding name.

Genesis was the best name for a system (IMO) because it lived up to its name.....new beginning.

BrunoM4082d ago

Gr814082d ago

It was to be called Omni? Which doesn't sound bad at all actually.

Ju4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

In the devkits the Vita was (and still is) called PSP2. So what does this confirm? (and BTW: this "spec sheet" is soo fake).

PS4

Sorry but why would they want to change the name

PS1, PS2, PS3...it's like tradition for Sony consoles now to be numbered.

Why would they change it now

OccludedGamer4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

I think I recall hearing once that the number 4 is considered unlucky in Japan, so I suppose that could give some leverage to the console perhaps being renamed.

Personally I think they will bite the luck bullet and go with 4 anyway. Not to mention that it's almost coming full circle for Sony by reaching number for.

The 4 iconic button symbols in the initial trailer stood out to me as making a point about the number 4, but I could be reading too deep.

DigitalRaptor4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

This superstition, whilst true, doesn't apply to Sony and their marketing of PlayStation.

Their consoles have always been known, marketed and prounounced in Japan as Pureisutēshon (PS1), Pureisutēshon Tsū (PS2), Pureisutēshon Surī (PS3).

The next one will be the equivalent of PS4 - pronounced similar to English. The Japanese number "4" won't be uttered when it comes to PS4.

Thanks for the explanation. That deserves an intelligent bubble!

Gladiator’s Arena review - Games Asylum

Games Asylum: "Even though the Vampire Survivors influenced ‘auto shooter’ genre isn’t long in the tooth, I’m still surprised that it has taken this long for a Roman gladiator-themed rendition to come along – especially with a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 box office hit Gladiator imminent. It’s thematically perfect, with its circular arena in which one man stands alone against hordes of enemies, grabbing loot as they survive one wave to the next."
