Since its birth in the form of the legendary Wolfenstein 3D, the humble first-person shooter has evolved into a blockbusting, technology-pushing beast of a genre. Often at the forefront of innovation and graphical prowess, such is the thirst for more realistic-looking dismemberment, games such as Doom, Quake, Unreal and Halo have not only advanced and expanded what was expected of their own genre but made technological leaps and taken huge risks that have paid off for gaming as a whole.
Have you ever looked at a modern first-person shooter and wondered "How did we get here?" Wealth of Geeks performs a deep dive into the genre, including some of the most influential games, from the very first FPS from the cross-genre experiences that changed the game entirely.
GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 leap up due to summer sales
Wow, good games never get old I guess.
CoD will always be a beast of a franchise, and how awesome is it that you can just boot it up or pop it into your Xbox and play, MS BC is really a neat feature.
Twinfinite: “War may never change, but the prices of rare games do!”
"And lastly, famous Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling helped to create the action-RPG’s setting. What’s really fascinating, though, is that the game was partially financed by taxpayers from Rhode Island (which allegedly lost the state millions of dollars). Yikes!"
1. Now infamous Schilling
2. No allegedly, it did. And they couldn't pay it back.
3. What really lost the money wasn't the SP release but the MMO they were working on. This was supposed to be an introduction into the MMO world.
I hate counting limited editions for these lists. I mean, they're made to be rare and expensive. It's far more interesting to hear about the NCAAs (even if most people know that one already) and the El Chavos than some massive hit that came with a $200 statue at retail.
Most Xbox games don’t hold as much value compared to other systems. Kameo, Blue Dragon, Last Remnant , and a handful or 2 of other games that I kept.
Too late. Killzone 2 already saved the first person shooter.
I wasn't aware FPSs needed saving.
All I know is Bioshock 1 was a masterpiece and one of the only games I replayed on a harder difficulty multiple times.
This one is going to be a must have.
Biocrap is what it means to me.
Dial your expectations back a bit.
