Review – Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time – A Blast From The Past (Gaming Irresponsibly)

Joey writes: Handing your beloved franchise off to another developer has often produced unimpressive results. It has happened time and time again, and will continue to. So when it was announced that the Sly Cooper franchise – one of my favorites from the PS2 era - would be handed off to the relatively unknown Sanzaru Games, I was a bit worried.

Sly Cooper Thieves in time. Sneaking onto shelf stores near you. Sony learn how to market your games. Don't push them out to die.

GribbleGrunger4083d ago

'Sneaking onto shelf stores near you.'

Very nice choice of words there. Hopefully the new advertising studio that Sony have just employed will make a difference.

CGI-Quality4083d ago (Edited 4083d ago )

Agreed

andibandit4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

we've been praying for that since PS3 released ...

one of the PS3's big releases this year has 10 comments so far, case in point....

@Bagogames

"Sony learn how to market your games. Don't push them out to die."

Like Resistance 3, for example? Piss-poor sales of arguably the best game in the series is why Insomniac is no longer a Sony-only developer.

-MD-4083d ago

Resistance 3 was by far the best in the series. Another game that got almost zero advertising was Twisted Metal.

My favorite game from 2012.

showtimefolks4083d ago

Oh man resistance 3 don't even remind me for a game that has a great story and deep MO sny showed no effort. Yet they out in all their efforts for uncharted and killzone

I feel like EA does the same with their 2nd party studios, with their EA Partners program they barely advertise those games because they don't own the IP. Shadow of damned ZERO advertisement. Now Insomniac's next game fuse will suffer though that too watch

I am hooing is new advertisement firm actually does smart advertisement, you don't have to spend 50 million on each game but having some sort of advertisement would help.

People buy SLY 4 it's a awesome game. Let's support great software

CGI-Quality4083d ago

I'm sure Resistance 3 isn't why Insomniac decided, long before it even released, to go multi-platform. Google the info, the agreement was made long before that, and all things considered, they've remained close to Sony.

Knushwood Butt4082d ago

It had a decent single player campaign, but I'll take RFOM any day. Also, multi player was quite easily the worst of the series.

Plus, Capelli was the main character.

Also, setting it in America again was a lame choice.

I doubt advertising has much to do with it. Nobody advertises GT5 or Uncharted 3 but they still sell thousands of copies each week to this day.

How come this game gets so varying reviews. Some give it a 5 or 6 out of 10 and here we have a 9.3. I would really ike to see some balance in these reviews. Is the game mediocre at best or one of the best games available. I've never played a single Sly game in my life. Throw me a bone here.

LiViNgLeGaCY4082d ago

Just got my copy this morning and I've been playing it all day. I freakin' love it. You should get the Sly collection to experience these great games.

edenianrain4082d ago

The low reviews are from people saying it stays true to its roots and it does but these same people give assassians creed and call of duty high scores and those are the same thing every year, bit sly has added more characters, variety of mini games,a ton of well hidden collectibles, but you should play the originals first, all in all im a fan of ac and sly and id take sly over ac3.

BlaqMagiq244082d ago

Reviewers are saying though it sticks to its roots, it's not really anything special or do anything innovative compared to other open world games or platformers this gen. Personally it's no lower than an 8 and it's definitely a breath of fresh air. A lot of work and creativity was put into that game. Do yourself a favor and pick up the Sly Collection. It's like 20 bucks online now.

abzdine4082d ago

i'm getting this game no doubt about it. screw COD a** licker reviewers.

Is it law that every Sly game from Sly 2 onwards end on a massive cliffhanger? I wouldn’t be as anxious for a Sly 5 if they just gave Sly 4 a succinct ending.

On another note we still have yet to hear anything about how that Sly Cooper television series is coming along.

BlaqMagiq11579d ago

Duh. It's been almost 7 years. It NEEDS a new one.

Elda1579d ago

Why not If they know fans of the games want it bad enough.

“So all I can is that if you guys want more Sly Cooper let Sony know. We are always ready to dig into that and it was a great franchise to work on. It was a great project.“

Everyone flood Sony and let them know! I’d love to have a new Sly game on PS5.

Sciurus_vulgaris1584d ago

I would love for the cliffhanger ending to get a conclusion.

Rude-ro1584d ago

This!
This game got massacred with reviews for no reason what so ever other than it was sonys swan songs along with god of war ascension of which also got hit.

Sciurus_vulgaris1584d ago

I actually think Thieves in Time was better than Sly Cooper 3 and I’m surprised it reviewed worse than its predecessor.

BlackIceJoe1584d ago

I'd be done for a new game being a launch, or near launch game for the PS5.

Segata1584d ago

I really liked these games. Please bring him back.

Chaos_Order1584d ago

Incoming unpopular opinion!

I thought Thieves in Time was decent, but a bit of a letdown to be honest. Sly 3 ended perfectly, giving a conclusion of sorts for the main 3 characters while still leaving a little room for imagination, and had some of the best moments from the entire series, (The fight with General Tsao, anyone?) then Thieves in Time comes along with its lame villain, destroys Penelope's character, (I legitimately thought she was being brainwashed or something. Plus, why the boss fight in that crappy little mech suit when she's a master combatant and tech wiz?) and logic that makes no sense even in a cartoon world, such as Sly purposely being sent to prison so he can break out by... Throwing the one ton iron ball he's chained to to break through the wall? When he's never showed this type of strength before, and never displays a similar feat ever again? Plus I thought the levels were better designed in earlier games, and the cast of controllable characters in 3 was much more diverse and interesting. Sucker Punch were the true masters of this series.

A Look at All of the Stealth Games Available on Vita

VGChartz's Adam Cartwright: "The stealth genre is one that some would argue doesn’t even exist – many titles include stealth elements, but actually fit into one of a number of other genres like action, platformer, or third-person shooter. Ever since the breakout success of the Metal Gear franchise (in particular Metal Gear Solid), though, the genre seems on much more stable footing and it demonstrated that you can have a veritable blockbuster on your hands relying only on stealth mechanics as the main gameplay element.

In recent years we’ve seen other things like Assassin’s Creed, Hitman and Splinter Cell continue to push the genre forward, although it still has somewhat limited appeal. Thankfully, the Vita has a healthy selection of stealth games available (and even more with backwards-compatibility), meaning if you’re looking to do some sneaking on the go then you’ll be well served with the console."
