Results Over Process, People

Douglas McGowan of Toasty Controller writes:

"With the next-generation of gaming slowly taking over before our very eyes, the time has come to review exactly how this generation's console race went about. I'll be talking about the console race as it has progressed since the launch of the 360 year-by-year, mainly taking into account each consoles exclusives and how those exclusives helped sell the hardware. This is definitely going to be a train-wreck, but I can deal with it. Let's start off with a serious jerk-move and show the weekly global sales graph for the year of 2005."

I can't tell you how refreshing it is to read an article about console competition on n4g that is informed by real numbers and FACTS. You have granted me a momentary reprieve from the hyperbole, and for that, we thank you.

Your reprieve will be extremely momentary. :(

Where are these worldwide hardware sales totals being taken from exactly??

It seems anyone can just put down the sales totals they believe, and BAMMM! an article is born to favor their favourite console.

UPDATE:

"(All hardware, software sales and charts are courtesy of VGChartz, along with various other sources)"

And there goes the validity of your sales charts, right down the drain.

lmaaaaaaao

Well played.

Durffen4089d ago

A no-name site like this isn't going to pay for NPD numbers. I give him credit for the research done and the use of available resources.

Merrill4089d ago

Well if you can't pay for the correct information don't make an article that relies on having the correct information that needs paying for to make the article reliable.

VGChartz is not a reliable or accurate replacement for facts.

Nice article, its a shame he forgets the shipped units include huge amounts of BROKEN 360's being re-send.
With huge i say about 30 to 40% of the total shiped units.

Its a joke.

deafdani4089d ago

I think it's safe to say that it could be about 30-40% of the total shipped units in the first several years. However, the Xbox has been reliable ever since the Jasper model, with the "Slim" model being even more reliable, and that's been going on since mid-2008.

That's 4 years of reliable Xbox 360 hardware, so I don't think the proportion of replacement consoles vs. total hardware sales would be as big as 40% now.

DigitalSmoke4089d ago

Good point when it come's to progressive build quality, but! the first few years didn't count a 30% RROD rate, it was more likes of 100% failure rate within 2 years, yes 100% isn't a typo.

a huge ammount, an illigal! amount died and got replaced bumping up the shipped numbers.

"All hardware, software sales and charts are courtesy of VGChartz"

I wish I'd read that first.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron - Coming Back for a New Generation

Originally launched in 2011, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is coming to Nintendo Switch, so It's time to look back at the original.

jznrpg4h ago

Still have my ps3 copies. Bought it at launch and another one when I found it cheap and in perfect condition about 10 years ago. I wouldn’t buy it on Switch but if they made a PS5 version I would. I still have one of my PS3 Fats hooked up so good to go either way.

darthv724h ago

Id play it again on the switch. I wished my 360 version was bc but this is still a good way to play.

Fallout 3's Reveal Led To Death Threats And Bethesda's First Security Guard

The artist behind Fallout 4’s Deathclaw reveals just how bad things got back when Bethesda took over the series

anast6h ago

People are stupid I get it. No one should feel unsafe,

But I think they need to talk about why they cut so many corners during the development process and why none of their games ever look current. And why they think all of this is okay while they charge full price.

LucasRuinedChildhood5h ago

As much as Bethesda deserve criticism, that's not really relevant to the reveal of Fallout 3 in 2007.

VenomUK2h ago

The default angle Kotaku always go for is to highlight the worst in gaming.

I would’ve focused on the creative.

there is no "but". the hell lol
you dont send death threats, period.
