Historically, gamers, comic book nerds, and geeks of all kinds have been shunned, ostracized, and bullied by these types of people. I don't care who plays games, or who tries to become a gamer. But there is one prerequisite... And that is playing games. Not just using them as a fashion accessory, and not just gnawing on controllers to impress boys.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying Naiomi Kyle is the most attractive woman ever or that she doesn't seem a bit awkward in the Daily Fix (it's mostly the script that makes it sound awkward I think). I'm just saying that it's a bit ridiculous to claim that someone is a fake gamer girl because they are fairly attractive and have a job on a big gaming site. Sure, maybe she is a gamer girl, but at least she isn't constantly shouting it from the rooftops and saying stuff like "LOLZ, me so n33rdy". Most Gamer girls remain elusive and for good reasons, they know how to play the game, both literally and socially. They don't exist to get away from delinquents and they understand their unfortunate position in the industry in the eyes of the more idiotic male fanbase.

Now, I'm going to have to disagree with you, because I think it is deeper than that. If someone plays tetris or whatever casually, then that is fine, they are a casual gamer who really doesn't need to be considered a hardcore gamer. But there are men and women out there who play things like Tetris, Zelda, Mario and stuff like that very seriously. Call of Duty kiddies, and people like that are "seasonal gamers" as in they only play seasonal titles. I would consider them casual gamers as well. It is the people who really play nothing at all, but maybe pokemon, or zelda, or portal sparatically, and then get tattoos, go to cons, and act like they are hardcore... those are the "fake gamers" the ones that use gameboys and xbox controllers for nothing but props in photos to show how "retro geek" they are.

You need to PLAY a game to be a gamer. More than once too.

my main poit wasnt the fact that people that play those games arent gamers, but its mainly the fact that whenever a celebrity is asked are you a gamer, those are seriously the only ones that come up not one time have i heard them say oh i play zelda,tomb raider,infamous,devil may cry,uncharted,gta,etc...its always the mainstream stuff, but when someone ask a mid level celebrity that bactually games they say stuff like assassians creed,gta,uncharted,etc...

And how many average gamers do you see complaining? I mean, if girls aren't your thing, then thats cool. My brothers gay and I love him to death. But for straight guys who are into girls, I don't see what the problem is. Attractive female models plastered onto any product as bait isn't an idea limited to gaming, and from my understanding has never "hurt" anyone.

Sex sells. If Sony used two half naked attractive models to carry out a Vita redesign to Kaz on the 20th...I'm willing to bet that Sony's core gamer demographic wouldn't be bothered by it.

They exist, sure, but seriously, how are they possibly ruining everything by making us all look like idiots? If anything they have a desperate need for attention, and they are using games for that attention. There are many things in this world that receive this treatment by both sexes, so I don't really understand why it's such a big deal in the gaming community.

Ignore them and move on. If people want to glorify them, then that's really on them. All these stupid articles about it are only bringing them more attention, so what's the point. Seriously, if people give a girl more attention in this community because she's a girl, then it's likely they have very little to do with me, because I often find it easier to like or dislike people based on their general personality. Never once have I based my perception on another person on what kind of games they played, or even if they played games at all.

To be fair, I've had guys at GameStop that have never heard of a game that I wanted as well.

The two women at my local gamestop I would consider to be pretty hardcore gamers. The older one, who's the manager, is well versed in all the consoles and knows what exists and what is coming out, and what recommendations to make to customers. The younger one, probably 18-20yo could run circles around most self-proclaimed "gamers" with her knowledge of games, developers, history of gaming, and the industry itself.

You don't need to know a lot about video games, it's history or even what games are out. You don't need to play specific games or whatever. That is just segregation made up by immature people.

I agree that no one can agree. Even the definition of hardcore, core, or casual is truly defined and varies by great degrees around the net.

To me if someone plays a game and enjoys it, no matter what it is, then I would call them a gamer. Some of the titles listed above are easier to specify a point without spelling it out, which is why I use them from time to time.

Segregating gamers even further into age, sex, race classes is just too much, and totally unnecessary.

It's more to do with businesses hiring those not interested in the products being sold/spoken about. Happens quite a bit in the UK. I remember when a newspaper printed that Uncharted 2 was coming on Xbox.

This is Gamestop in general. I applied there, put all kinds of knowledge about games on my application, the guy talked to me and said "we just simply have someone with retail/sales experience, sorry"

I go in the store later, the dude they hired is totally clueless about everything with video games..... Couldn't tell you anything that didn't revolve around Call of Duty....

There was another gamestop that had a female worker, coolest Gamestop employee I've ever met. Knew more about video games than I did! And played all the consoles, and not once had a bias conversation about how great Xbox is.

Regardless of the knowledge, not everyone will know as much as the other gamer to his/her left would know. There are many things I don't know about games, but there are many things I do know. I've been gaming since the Sega Genesis and classic days of going to the arcade. I am a gamer and proud of it.
