Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time Review: A few years late | CNET

CNET: "Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time completely nails the style and feel of the original trilogy, but doesn't do much to separate itself as a reimagined franchise. It's priced right and is great for kids and Sly Cooper diehards, but those on the fence shouldn't expect anything more than just a new Sly Cooper game in HD."

i might need to pick up the sly collection and hop onto the bandwagon cuz ive considered picking up this title on the vita. not sure what else to play next after uncharted golden abyss

Knushwood Butt4090d ago

The Sly collection is a ton of fun.

I'd never played any of them before getting that, but ended up beating all 3.

BTW, nice avatar. I was playing multiplayer last night for the first time in a long time. Good times, although got a bit wasted in the second half of the session.

refocusedman4090d ago

r there still alot of people playing multiplayer?

bestofthebest4090d ago

how is everyone still play killzone 3 after update 1.14 it makes my game freeze at startup every time is there a fix i dont know about.

refocusedman4090d ago

Lol Lol how do u disagree with a simple question?

Kalowest4090d ago

"not sure what else to play next after uncharted golden abyss"

Gravity Rush, Persona 4 Golden, Escape Plan, and LBP Vita. I played the demo for uncharted golden abyss, and I hated it.

r214090d ago

Dont forget Unit 13, Super Stardust Delta, Mutant Blob From Outer Space.

Knushwood Butt4089d ago

@ refocusedman

I didn't have any trouble getting into a game, but only played deathmatch.

At one point ended up going up against a Japanese clan with a bunch of players. They were pretty good.

Also, I didn't have any freezing issue.

The review should be just happy that a 3D platformer was finally released for a console :L Havent seen those since Alice: Madness Returns.

sarshelyam4090d ago

As a fan of the franchise, I'm not sure what more could be expected other than what was delivered. It's a phenomenal platformer with the same great level design and humor from the original series. Sanzaru delivered everything I wanted in this, the 4th installment of the series.

CNET's reviewer for this, Jeff Bakalar, sites motion control as a poor implementation. While I certainly agree with his comment that most game steer clear of it, in this game it makes sense and, most importantly, it's responsive. I haven't had an issue with it yet and I'm just about done with the game.

It seems that Jeff has some reservations about giving a game at a budget title anything more than a glowing review. The knocks against the game are non-existent and, overall, it's an enjoyable romp.

I also find it interesting they make no mention of the Cross-Save and AR-Server functionality with the Vita game. Early on, the Vita serves to really assist with younger gamers, like my son, in locating hidden treasures, bottles, Sly maskes, etc. It's a pretty amazing use of the system and shows the potential for cross-controller gameplay.

SolidDuck4090d ago

Hmm, didn't know that was a thing, my killzone 3 doesn't freeze.

Is it law that every Sly game from Sly 2 onwards end on a massive cliffhanger? I wouldn’t be as anxious for a Sly 5 if they just gave Sly 4 a succinct ending.

On another note we still have yet to hear anything about how that Sly Cooper television series is coming along.

BlaqMagiq11583d ago

Duh. It's been almost 7 years. It NEEDS a new one.

Elda1583d ago

Why not If they know fans of the games want it bad enough.

“So all I can is that if you guys want more Sly Cooper let Sony know. We are always ready to dig into that and it was a great franchise to work on. It was a great project.“

Everyone flood Sony and let them know! I’d love to have a new Sly game on PS5.

Sciurus_vulgaris1589d ago

I would love for the cliffhanger ending to get a conclusion.

Rude-ro1588d ago

This!
This game got massacred with reviews for no reason what so ever other than it was sonys swan songs along with god of war ascension of which also got hit.

Sciurus_vulgaris1588d ago

I actually think Thieves in Time was better than Sly Cooper 3 and I’m surprised it reviewed worse than its predecessor.

BlackIceJoe1588d ago

I'd be done for a new game being a launch, or near launch game for the PS5.

Segata1588d ago

I really liked these games. Please bring him back.

Chaos_Order1588d ago

Incoming unpopular opinion!

I thought Thieves in Time was decent, but a bit of a letdown to be honest. Sly 3 ended perfectly, giving a conclusion of sorts for the main 3 characters while still leaving a little room for imagination, and had some of the best moments from the entire series, (The fight with General Tsao, anyone?) then Thieves in Time comes along with its lame villain, destroys Penelope's character, (I legitimately thought she was being brainwashed or something. Plus, why the boss fight in that crappy little mech suit when she's a master combatant and tech wiz?) and logic that makes no sense even in a cartoon world, such as Sly purposely being sent to prison so he can break out by... Throwing the one ton iron ball he's chained to to break through the wall? When he's never showed this type of strength before, and never displays a similar feat ever again? Plus I thought the levels were better designed in earlier games, and the cast of controllable characters in 3 was much more diverse and interesting. Sucker Punch were the true masters of this series.

A Look at All of the Stealth Games Available on Vita

VGChartz's Adam Cartwright: "The stealth genre is one that some would argue doesn’t even exist – many titles include stealth elements, but actually fit into one of a number of other genres like action, platformer, or third-person shooter. Ever since the breakout success of the Metal Gear franchise (in particular Metal Gear Solid), though, the genre seems on much more stable footing and it demonstrated that you can have a veritable blockbuster on your hands relying only on stealth mechanics as the main gameplay element.

In recent years we’ve seen other things like Assassin’s Creed, Hitman and Splinter Cell continue to push the genre forward, although it still has somewhat limited appeal. Thankfully, the Vita has a healthy selection of stealth games available (and even more with backwards-compatibility), meaning if you’re looking to do some sneaking on the go then you’ll be well served with the console."
