Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - A Classy But Compromised Spin-Off? | OXM

OXM Staff: ''After a lengthy lull, Japanese-flavoured action games are coming back in a big way. We've already had DmC and Anarchy Reigns; now genre master Platinum Games has the floor with its Metal Gear spin-off.''

My_Name_BTW_Is_Dante4092d ago

There is nothing classy about it. I hope the story is ignored when Kojima makes real Metal Gear games. It should be like MGSPO where they disregard almost everything or just say that it was all a bad dream.

zerocrossing4092d ago

Why? if it's a good game and doesn't do any harm to the previous canon then let it go.

It's an interesting and fun looking hack n slash game set in the MGS universe, how could anyone not be OK with this?.

wishingW3L4092d ago (Edited 4092d ago )

it does harm because Rising is canon.

oriononer4091d ago (Edited 4091d ago )

Cyborg ninjas are canon. Where is the harm?

HiddenMission4092d ago

@Dante

I already know you don't like the game "Dante" you've made it clear in you comment history. You're simply jelly that it's set to wipe the floor with DmC in the two areas that matter most story (done by Kojima Productions) and combat (done by Platinum games) both of which are so far above Ninja Theory in every possible way that all it can do is make a person like yourself just plain salty...

:P

PS: Kojima confirmed it's CANNON so get over it kid!

BlackTar1874092d ago

I actually played the demo and wasn't quite impressed. Ill wait to rent it when it releases i just couldn't get into the hack commands.

HiddenMission4092d ago

@BlackTar

The demo had a lot of functions that the tutorials did not cover. I had to go online to find out how much depth there was like being able to walk around in Blade Mode.

There is a massive amount of depth that's in the demo but you need to experiment to bring out how truly amazing it is.

I honestly believe that the weaker end of the spectrum type of gamer will press a couple of buttons and miss the point entirely while the gamer who dives deep into titles will see how vastly superior to every hack n slash game out there.

With all the videos that came out after the demo show a glimpse at what kinds of additional depth to the combat. Infinite New Game Plus and hunting for left hands to cut off for unique upgrades.

The last real feature that was only shown once was the use of the Ninja Run to pull off wall runs that lead into a combo system.

Like I said this game has more depth in it's pinkie than everything else combined.

BlackTar1874092d ago (Edited 4092d ago )

People are so sensitive.

Thanks hidden i'll admit i played it at 2am after like 5 hrs of COD(which im not a huge fan of just like to play with friends) so i may have been off my game.

I also tried Crysis 3 at this time and was unimpressed. Ill try again but i may still keep it as a rental.

Thanks for the response.

Godmars2904092d ago

"The demo had a lot of functions that the tutorials did not cover."

Then it kind of fails for that reason, because most people aren't going to experiment with it. Took me a third play-through to find the lock-on.

Baka-akaB4092d ago

And yet lock on was listed in the list of controls . I'll agree that the tutorial should do better ... when it's visible it's still visible

TheFirstClassic4092d ago

Portable Ops? That was a great game, one of the psp's best.

NatureOfLogic4092d ago

Don't know why they didn't go with the grey fox ninja instead. The story would've been darker and more interesting. I prefer grey fox brutal style over Raiden. Remember the medic from mgs3, she made ninja grey fox but when he awoke he killed her. Grey fox all day.

Xklaw4091d ago

Kojima already said that he prefered a gray fox game, but for that he would need to be deeply involved. Since the initial ideia for rising wasn´t his ( it was is team idea ) and he was busy with the development of fox engine, they went with raiden instead, mainly to explain how he became a cyborg.

TemplarDante4092d ago

BTW, my name is Dante...
You're a Donte, like the junkie in DmC...

classic2004092d ago

YOUR NOT THE REAL DANTE, YOUR HAIR IS BLACK!!!??

FAKE

oriononer4091d ago (Edited 4091d ago )

My_Name_BTW_Is_Dante: There is only one way to explain what you are doing in all of these MGR posts. You have discovered some way to monetize disagrees and are farming them. That's the only way this makes any sense. How are you doing it? Tell me!!!! I'm going to get to the bottom of this.

I think Rising is a new IP in the guise of a Metal Gear game.

Think about it for a sec, in this economy developing a new IP is extremely risky even for the top devs which is why we have countless sequels, reboots and rehashes.

The smart thing to do is to take an already existing franchise and put a new spin on it, so where as Metal gear rising isn't a a reboot like DmC, it's still a fresh new hack n slash game but set in a familiar universe, one that is successful enough to guarantee sales from MGS fans and fans of the hack n slash genre.

Well, this is just my opinion on the game, so true or not it's a pretty interesting and lucrative concept for a business model in the current economy.

RyuX194092d ago

That's exactly what is. It's the starting of a new franchise within the established one. People will still get their classic MGS while fans of Raiden and Action games will also get Metal Gear Rising.

It's a way to expand the brand and get more people into the series which I thought was a good thing.

wishingW3L4092d ago

it's not a good thing when it ruins characters and time-lines because Rising is canon.

Unicron4091d ago (Edited 4091d ago )

How is it ruining anything? I love MGS, but Kojima is synonymous with retcon.

JoySticksFTW4092d ago

I think it looks great so far. Over the top fun.

I love the part when Raiden slices up the on-coming missile.

As long as you don't go in expecting a metal gear stealth game, just a mg-flavored action game, you should be all right.

And yes Raiden is a ninja, but we all saw the feats he was pulling in MGS4. I don't think he'd be stealthing around much; he'd be whupping arse.

Roccetarius4092d ago

DmC was far from Japanese-flavoured action. The old games however, were not.

MGR:R looks like it's going to wipe the floor with it, and that's only a good thing for me. I like the challenging aspect of it, and the depth the combat has. Hell, it even has the depth, if not more like the old DMC games.

wishingW3L4091d ago

I have no idea what you're talking about "depth" because Rising has no depth in the combat. The main focus of Rising is the slicing, and all the combos are 100% canned. =/

Roccetarius4091d ago (Edited 4091d ago )

There are a lot of things that aren't explained in the demo. Not to mention the things you can unlock in the game.

http://www.xbox360achieveme...

This is what someone found out from the demo alone.

Hanso4092d ago

DmC was a huge failure
MGR will be the anti DmC mark my words

Metal Gear Solid Can Work Without Hideo Kojima

There are more good non-Kojima Metal Gear games than one would realize. Scientifically, three examples prove a trend, and in this feature are three excellent Metal Gear games that Hideo Kojima did not direct.

I hope so, still cant forget MGS Survive , the first MGS game without Kojima involvement and it was a complete failure, the thing is Kojima way of thinking is outside the box and that's why their games 99% end up unique, original and a almost instant classic. MGS series are full of intricate things that somehows connects to each other, Lalulilelo, the Patriots, Outher heaven, Foxhound, PMCs , heck even Kojima manage to insert DARPA in there lol, a US government Defense Agency. So is really great MGS3 Remake is reviving the series but without Kojima who knows of the end result, I hope Konami have another or more developers insight their studios who can also think outside the box.

senorfartcushion323d ago

It actually can’t. But it won’t matter.

Kojima is Metal Gear the same way that Christopher Nolan is The Dark Knight, or David Lynch is Twin Peaks: The Return episode 8. Artistry is the creation of a thing from your own thoughts and feelings. Take away the original artist’s thoughts and feelings and you have a new thing entirely.

This isn’t going to stop the mega corporation creating a fake version and spending millions TELLING customers that it’s made with the same thoughts and feelings. The masses will buy the idea the same way the corporation will sell the idea.

just_looken323d ago

I guess everyone forgot metal gear solid rising was tossed to platnium games with a story script and that is it.

Z501322d ago

Kojima was involved in Rising tho

just_looken322d ago

kpjima just did the story everything else was platnium games look it up.

Hence i said script

neutralgamer1992323d ago

i think the bigger issue is whether or not Konami is actually interested in fully funding AAA games development. Even this remake is done by a studio not really known in gaming industry. Quality remake/projets vs cheap cash in quick releases. Which way will Konami head. I am a huge MGS fan and i feel like Kojima did long time MGS fans dirty with how made MGS5 and it's story elements

senorfartcushion323d ago

Remakes and remasters provide a gateway through to producing AAA games faster and cheaper.

RaveTears323d ago (Edited 323d ago )

Actually MGS Portable Ops which was technically the first canon MGS game that Kojima wasn’t mainly involved with it. Kojima was only the producer but not the writer and director.

Konami did other MGS spin off that were successful but that because Konami put effort. Just along Konami is not lazy and cash grab, they can a MGS game without Kojima.

i mean sure, but he made it the thing it is today and why people love it so much.

i think its not easy to replicate.

Flawlessmic323d ago

I doubt it could.

Say what you want about the bloke, but his games are uniquely his.

I don't think anyone makes games like kojima does, for better or worse.

Could mgs continue without him, yea maybe, but it would lacking his genius so wouldn't be the same.

Soulsborne323d ago

Well , he already created it. They just have to recreate it? Not like its a new concept or IP. Trash article.

Terry_B323d ago

Yes. It only needs motivated clever people.

Why We Need Metal Gear Rising 2

Demand for a sequel is about to skyrocket, like the good ol' days of 2013!

In case you're living under a suspiciously rock-shaped object, the recent PlayStation Showcase revealed that a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 will be coming, alongside a Master Collection of Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3. While it is a remake of an existing game, there's a great deal of significance to it, considering the last time a game in the series came out was back in 2018 with Metal Gear Survive (and the less said about that, the better). Konami's decision to pull a Konami and feud with series creator Hideo Kojima has long left the fate of Metal Gear uncertain, but this recent announcement has led to all bets being off as to where Metal Gear can go from here.
