Innovation in the video game industry, is it dead?

Industry gets older, the more innovation will be harder to come by. It is still there though, just play the unfinished swan to no that.

Nobody will throw money for something like unfinished swan, it is priced to high, and no one knows what he will get with games like that, unlike CoD.
And I agree with the article, a saw no innovation in gow1->gow3, I was already bored with the second gow.
But some peoples are eagerly excited to play gow4 just for the graphics.

And that is what I think is wrong with the industry, soon we will get new consoles but games will remain the same, only the number in title will change, and the saddest thing is that today's gamers are fine with it.

Is the industry dead, I don't know. But I will say graphics are getting better, computer speed are faster and Internet speeds are going up... Why is lag getting worst!

Graphic driven fans have hand cuff the industry. Halo 2 with my 3 mb connection had less lag that all the games played with my Comcast 50mb connection.

It's all about playing safe. Working on the same formula to make sure it's a game that will give you profit. At this moment, there's no time for experimentation in the industry of video games.

No deff not, a lot of the games coming out this year are the most unique we've seen in a while. And a lot of it has to do with the indie side of things.

innovation comes to pc first usually, when it works then it goes on consoles as well. its just easier for the little guys to start on pc, then the suits gobble up the ideas and go multiplat.

Maybe for AAA games, but the indie scene is amazing and making some incredible stuff. Its a great time for games for sure.

No don't be so melodramatic. Yes there are people out there screwing the art form to get as much cash as possible but innovation will always sell. For example minecraft. The reality is one person is innovative and then that will get raped until someone else innovates. That's hardly a dying process.

The only problem is that many of these video games are not even games. They're interactive cinema's with usually mediocre to bad control schemes and repetitive gameplay (Uncharted, for instance).

Lol cod really that's your best example, tired of overdramatic "journalists" bemoaning the death of innovation in gaming.

You have mirrors edge, heavy rain, la noire, the souls series, dragons dogma, red dead redemption ect get off your fucking ass and look for them.

Sequels pay for new ips, the "innovation" will probably come from psn/marketplace titles do to the reality of higher dev costs and studios closing if they have too many poor selling titles.

I swear some of you people seem oblivious to the fact, that developers have bills to pay and families to support. You try to paint a overly simple black and white picture, it's not a simple case of laziness or greed.

"It’s time for something new and fresh." Yeah it's called new ip's genius, something this generation has not seen a lack of, despite the stupid use of buzzwords like innovation by everyone and their dog.

If there was no competition the rest of the yrs lineup would be empty rather than filled with games.
