Hands-On with God of War: Ascension | PlayStation Blog

Sid Shuman // Social Media Manager writes:

Set before the events of the original God of War, God of War: Ascension is set up as a sort of origin story for the perennially tortured Spartan general Kratos. A sequence early in the game even depicts how Kratos first earned those iconic Blades of Chaos. Watching that scene, I couldn’t help but flash back to the genesis of Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk, two other social misfits who transcended a personal tragedy to become living legends.

GowA was on Workaholics last night. The gameplay footage was different than the media has shown so far. It looked great.

God Of War, why you so EPIC?

Godmars2904094d ago

plaZeHD? You like movies about Gladiators?

Godmars2904094d ago

Really feeling odd about Kratos saving people this time out.

Not so much in reference to GodMars, but I don't really understand why a bunch of reviewers were coming out saying how much they love God of War but hate the character of Kratos "because he has been angry for three games and yells every line of dialog" Did they play God of War one? I'm sorry, but Kratos really doesn't even speak that much overall in that game, and when he does, its usually NOT yelling until after he tries to jump off the cliff and Athena rescues him.

Kratos actually goes through quite a bit of emotions of GoW1. There is a specific scene I always remember right after you rip the skull off the corpse in the first coffin. As you are walking through a hall way you come to a pile of bodies. It cuts to a flashback, and then a close up of kratos' face and all he says is, "By the Gods, what have I become?" Its not until the Gods (Athena) intervenes and saves Kratos from killing himself, then tasks him with taking down Ares that he starts his truly angry streak, and for good reason. He officially lost all his freedom. Then they make him a God only to strip it all away. He has every right to be angry, so why is that a fault of the character? Sounds to me like people from IGN, 1UP, and GameSpot need to actually play the first game, and not just claim they have.

I also forgot to mention the near final fight in GoW1 which was essentially Kratos battling himself to rescue his family. It was an incredibly emotional battle that really allows you to understand the pain he is going through.

Godmars2904093d ago

Not to offend, but have YOU ever played GOW? Know what happened with the ship captain through the three games? In the first Kratos had to do next to nothing to save the man band instead hurries him along. You can't really say he was different hardened man than he he'll be in this game, since he's already covered in the ashes of his family.

BitbyDeath4093d ago

Kratos will be a mess of emotions in this one as should be expected after losing ones family.

This includes anger as seen in the gif below.

He was alaways a ruthless leader of the Spartan Army. He didn't save the guy because it didn't help in his end goal, who cares? What does that have to do with hating the character because he yells to much? Are you going to take that one event and claim the entire game was as if Sam Jackson was reading the script? No. Kratos was ruthless, but not to the point that you would hate him. The game does a pretty excellent job of slowly revealing his story and you begin to understand with why he is so hateful towards the Gods.

Godmars2904093d ago

Who gives a sh*t about yelling? I'm talking about when he's either standing by while innocents are being attacked or he's actively killing them himself.

I mean after - before - the first three games you're expected to believe that someone who rose to command the Spartan army, draw the attention of Ares becoming his agent, THEN murdered his family had enough humanity remaining before his god killing spree to shove a guy out of the path of a spear?

God Of War Tried Multiplayer Too Early

God of War's forgotten multiplayer mode was introduced nearly a decade ago, but it may have been a great addition if it was implemented now.

Ruined Ascensions story mode. Taking away the one button parry sucked.

abstractel516d ago

Not saying it was perfect but I really enjoyed it. One of the more unique MP experiences. Wouldn't mind them trying again.

Palitera516d ago

It was nuts that they actually managed to make that experience work so well.
The story might have been the weakest (story-wise) in the main series, but the MP was super fun and well done.

I don’t play god of war for the multiplayer so it’s always too soon in my book.

Ranking the God of War Games

Kratos has been on a rampage, killing Gods in epic battles since 2005. With each release managing to offer high-octane action, I explore each God of War title and rank every adventure from his journey to Olympus to his Norse tales of fatherhood.

I won’t rank Ragnarok just yet, although it is honestly leaving me and my wife blown away…won’t go into details right now, not done as I assume others aren’t either, maybe some of you are, idk haha.

But here’s how I rank them

5. God of War 3
4. God of War Ascension.
3. God of War 1.
2. God of War 2.
1. God of War 2018.

MrNinosan527d ago

My same ranking exactly, with Ragnarök at #1.

ClayRules2012526d ago

Wow, that’s pretty interesting that someone has the same ranking as me haha. So, did you beat Ragnarok? I assume so with you placing it at #1

Flawlessmic527d ago

1. God of war 3
2. God of war 2018
3. God of war 2
4. God of war 1

Haven't played the others but about 30 hrs In to ragnarock now so safe to say if it keeps up it will end up being at the top of my list when I'm done.

CrimsonWing69527d ago

I will say the pacing of the original titles and the epic feel to them I feel is way better than the new one’s. Like, I could recognize and appreciate the praise God of War received, but it bores me to tears except for the pivotal moments.

However, that being said I feel Ragnarok is waaaaay better than 2018. I’m only on Ch. 6, but it’s pretty much rocked my face off from the get-go.

I’m really split between this being my GotY or Elden Ring.

I think different games in the series had different strengths but all are great. I liked the original as it was an origin story and the mechanics were fresh. The sequel added smoother gameplay. Three was just so far ahead of it's time graphically it wasn't even funny. Plus great gameplay and bosses and insane gore and nice use of sexy time. The reboot was cool but lost a lot of what I liked about the original trilogy (I don't need my games grown up, just fun). Will wait and see with ragnarok as haven't had time to play it yet.

Every God of War Game Ranked From Worst To Best

BLG writes: "God of War has evolved significantly since the first game launched in 2005. Each subsequent entry has brought something new to the series, be it new power sets, fighting styles, and in the case of the 2018 reboot, a whole new combat system. Therefore, a major component in ranking every God of War game is that game’s impact on the franchise."

2 is my all time favorite with Ascension being my least (but still worth playing). First time dealing with the colossus of rhodes as well as the scale of the steeds of time... just a great game overall.

Nacho_Z802d ago

3 is the best for me, closely followed by the reboot. The reboot lost some of the spectacular scenes in favour of deeper gameplay, 3 was jaw dropping at times. I'm hoping the next game will have the best of both.

Army_of_Darkness802d ago

Yeah 3 was my favorite as well! The Poseidon battle was amazing! Gameplay wise and graphically!

neutralgamer1992802d ago

Honestly first 2 were amazing. I really wanted Sony yo bring back David jaffe and have him do his own version of God of war reboot working in different mythology. David and Cory could make sure story made sense but I think God of war is a big enough series where multiple entries at the same time
