GXC: "Near is the social networking app on the PS Vita that allows you to check in to real life locations and pick-up and or leave gifts for other gamers to find and use in their games. You can also locate and connect with your PlayStation Network friends and other gamers nearby.
How many people have their Vita connected online near you?"
Its episode 78 of Heroes of Handheld, the podcast dedicated to everything PS Vita, Nintendo 3DS & Mobile Gaming! This week saw PlayStation end support of the YouTube, Near and Maps apps on PS Vita. What does this mean for future Apps for the handheld? and whilst the New 3DS XL is selling well, Nintendo celebrated 50 million sales of the original Nintendo 3DS.
Sony removes support for a few applications on Vita. And it's honestly about time too.
I agree with this. What a completely wasted app. It had potential which was squandered.
Sony should pull the plug on the Vita already, it's been on life support for almost 2 years now
Sony has done an absolutely horrible job supporting this device with quality games as a whole for quite awhile now. Many will argue that the JRPGs are great, but these games definitely aren't for everyone. They still have time to make the device more valuable of course, but for now there is absolutely no denying that the Nintendo 3DS is only real handheld that making waves now.
Near had a lot of potential but as with the Vita as a whole, Sony has not supported it in the least. I wouldn't agree with the "Good Riddance!" title, because I think the loss of it is still a loss, it isn't like the Vita is gaining anything from it's removal.
Sony should have used feedback and developed Near into a micro social media experience for PSN / Vita owners. Guess it is too late now ...
Near may not be missed but YouTube is necessary. I don't want to juggle devices so don't even say it.
NRM writes "Without question, the Vita is the most powerful and most compelling piece of portable gaming hardware to date that relies not on the gimmick of added dimensions, or indeed price points of pence to draw in the crowds. Put simply, the Vita is a gamer's handheld through-and-through; boasting near console-quality graphics, a fantastic line-up of games both in present and future (we await LittleBigPlanet Vita with bated breath), stunning functionality and a whole load of promise..."
I agree with this article whole heartedly but I am disappointed at the display on darker pallets. The 'mura' (clouding, blotching, spots, stains) is still noticeable on my device on greys and subtle greens. Only when the software in use physically boosts the colours do the stains 'disappear' back again. I have about a 2.5 inch swirl (looks like a piece of rope) which is distracting almost all of the time I use my Vita.
I know people have reported different scales of issues with this problem but it just spoils what is a perfect handheld device. I'm debating whether to return it but I don't want to end up with one that's even worse. I love the colour depth of the OLED but I prefer the crisper finish of say my iPhone display.. and it doesn't have stains or distractions.
Strange, I haven't noticed anything similar with my Vita, I'll keep an eye out though for sure.
I hardly even use Near. Never bother checking.
As low as 25, as high as about 60. Usually, though, from 30-45 or so.
Apparently there are ~80 people with Vitas within a 5mi radius of my home. I suppose that's not that bad for a 'struggling' handheld considering I am in a relatively rural area of SE Louisiana...
Near is a really bad social network and doesn't work nearly as well as Nintendo's Streetpass
i use to download free gift from other player..
