Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time Review | Rev3Games

Adam Sessler of Rev3Games gives his review of Sanzaru Games' recently released Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

"The idea of Sly Cooper and friends returning is a fine one, but with this outing does nothing to make the case, and it dilutes a solid formula with distractions, bringing nothing new or lasting."

I'd like to note that Adam's a HUGE Sly fan (which he mentions in the review). If anyone was going to give Thieves in Time perfect marks, it was him.

That being said, I'm still buying the game. The last great platformer to come out for PS3 was Rayman Origins, and that was over a year ago. My platformer itch needs to be scratched, and at $40 it's an easy investment to make.

Not necessarily, the fact that he is a big fan could mean he had extremely high expectations going into Sly 4 and they just weren't met.

Regardless of the reviews, with everything I've seen from Sly 4 it looks like more Sly, and that anyone who enjoyed the first 3 would enjoy it.

cleverusername4090d ago

If he liked the other Sly games then he shouldn't be complaining about this!! Makes no sense!!

badjournalism4091d ago

"...but this outing does nothing to make the case, and it dilutes a solid formula with distractions, bringing nothing new or lasting..."

This quote also applies to quite a few games he's given high/near perfect/perfect scores to, as well. He can say what he will about being fan but he's being a hypocrite with statements like that.

"This quote also applies to quite a few games he's given high/near perfect/perfect scores to, as well"

Such as?

EDIT: I have disagrees, but no responses. Classic!

badjournalism4091d ago

The call of duty games for one. He's even given Madden games better scores. There are more, but those make the point the best.

LOGICWINS4091d ago (Edited 4091d ago )

Send me the link to where HE himself has reviewed a Call of Duty game.

EDIT: And don't send me Xplay/G4 reviews. Those are done by Xplay as a whole...not by Adam himself. Adam, Morgan, and Blair PRESENT reviews, but they are generally done/written by interns.

GuyManDude4091d ago

@badjournalism:

Adam Sessler has never reviewed a Call of Duty game or a Madden game. He may have presented a video review for one of them, but they weren't his reviews. They were written by other members of G4.

COD BO2, MW3, Madden 13, and Madden 12 were all reviewed by someone else. I can guarantee you the rest were the same way.

@LOGICWINS

"And don't send me Xplay/G4 reviews. Those are done by Xplay as a whole...not by Adam himself. Adam, Morgan, and Blair PRESENT reviews, but they are generally done/written by interns."

So when interns write his reviews for him everything is EPIC and Mind Blowing! But when Adam does them he is highly critical, nitpicks it apart and generally focus on the negetives? Gotcha!

LOGICWINS4090d ago

I never said that. All I'm alluding to is that Adam has ALWAYS been spot on with his reviews. Every negative is BACKED UP.

From what im seeing on twitch streams about the game it is far better then the 4 he gave it. 4 in my book is when a game has problems that makes it almost unplayable. Sly 4 is not such a game.

MrDead4091d ago

Why give so much attention to the low scores and pay no attention to the high ones?

HarryMasonHerpderp4090d ago

It almost always happens. People are attracted by negativity. I'm guilty of it too but I still read the positive reviews to balance it out. Either way I was always going to buy this game whatever scores it got.

shivvy244091d ago

Who cares what it got, atleast were finally getting a sequel after all these years, from what ive seen its amazing

Is it law that every Sly game from Sly 2 onwards end on a massive cliffhanger? I wouldn’t be as anxious for a Sly 5 if they just gave Sly 4 a succinct ending.

On another note we still have yet to hear anything about how that Sly Cooper television series is coming along.

BlaqMagiq11579d ago

Duh. It's been almost 7 years. It NEEDS a new one.

Elda1579d ago

Why not If they know fans of the games want it bad enough.

“So all I can is that if you guys want more Sly Cooper let Sony know. We are always ready to dig into that and it was a great franchise to work on. It was a great project.“

Everyone flood Sony and let them know! I’d love to have a new Sly game on PS5.

Sciurus_vulgaris1585d ago

I would love for the cliffhanger ending to get a conclusion.

Rude-ro1585d ago

This!
This game got massacred with reviews for no reason what so ever other than it was sonys swan songs along with god of war ascension of which also got hit.

Sciurus_vulgaris1584d ago

I actually think Thieves in Time was better than Sly Cooper 3 and I’m surprised it reviewed worse than its predecessor.

BlackIceJoe1585d ago

I'd be done for a new game being a launch, or near launch game for the PS5.

Segata1585d ago

I really liked these games. Please bring him back.

Chaos_Order1585d ago

Incoming unpopular opinion!

I thought Thieves in Time was decent, but a bit of a letdown to be honest. Sly 3 ended perfectly, giving a conclusion of sorts for the main 3 characters while still leaving a little room for imagination, and had some of the best moments from the entire series, (The fight with General Tsao, anyone?) then Thieves in Time comes along with its lame villain, destroys Penelope's character, (I legitimately thought she was being brainwashed or something. Plus, why the boss fight in that crappy little mech suit when she's a master combatant and tech wiz?) and logic that makes no sense even in a cartoon world, such as Sly purposely being sent to prison so he can break out by... Throwing the one ton iron ball he's chained to to break through the wall? When he's never showed this type of strength before, and never displays a similar feat ever again? Plus I thought the levels were better designed in earlier games, and the cast of controllable characters in 3 was much more diverse and interesting. Sucker Punch were the true masters of this series.

A Look at All of the Stealth Games Available on Vita

VGChartz's Adam Cartwright: "The stealth genre is one that some would argue doesn’t even exist – many titles include stealth elements, but actually fit into one of a number of other genres like action, platformer, or third-person shooter. Ever since the breakout success of the Metal Gear franchise (in particular Metal Gear Solid), though, the genre seems on much more stable footing and it demonstrated that you can have a veritable blockbuster on your hands relying only on stealth mechanics as the main gameplay element.

In recent years we’ve seen other things like Assassin’s Creed, Hitman and Splinter Cell continue to push the genre forward, although it still has somewhat limited appeal. Thankfully, the Vita has a healthy selection of stealth games available (and even more with backwards-compatibility), meaning if you’re looking to do some sneaking on the go then you’ll be well served with the console."
