Thoughts on an Open-World Zelda game

VG writes: Recently, I have been playing the highly polarizing entry in the Legend of Zelda series, Skyward Sword. Anybody that follows my twitter (which is to say, nobody except for personal friends and robots attempting to sell me pornography) knows that I have had quite a few unkind words to say about the game’s design choices. Nearly every time I turn on the game and find myself getting more accustomed to the game’s many flaws, it does something new to baffle me. Between Fi’s constant flow-breaking interruptions to state and re-state the obvious, the muddy motion controls that only seem to work nine times out of ten, and the game’s constant efforts to remind me that I am a lonely nerd holding a controller instead of a rad-as-heck sky elf man adventurer, I can’t help but wonder about the recently announced upcoming Wii U Zelda game. So far all that we know about it is that the game will be non-linear, it will have co-op online multiplayer, and that Eiji Aonuma, the man upon which most of Skyward Sword’s problems are attributed, will be directing it.

I wonder how many death stares I will get for saying, I've never played a zelda game....looks around awkwardly.

You aren't the only one. I have only played about three Nintendo franchise

-Super Mario
-Donkey Kong
-Super Smash Bros

You are really missing out on some great franchises. If you have a Wii or GC, then i would stock up on some older First Party Gc games. A lot of them are pretty cheap by now. Or use the virtual console on Wii.

The GBA was a gold mine for Nintendo games as well.

Aren't all Zelda games open world?

Kevlar0094094d ago (Edited 4094d ago )

More in the vein of Elder Schrolls, games like that. Like dungeons in any order, more freedom in interactions, wide variety of weapons and equipment. Think bigger

Instigator4094d ago

Personally I don't really want Zelda to have a huge, open world like TES where you can traverse the whole world. I'd rather have a more condensed world packed with things to do. Think TP sized overworld with MM/WW/SS amount of content.

I wouldn't mind less linearity, either. Completing dungeons out of order as well as different solutions to puzzles and more than one way to approach a boss could go a long way to improve the series.

zalanis4094d ago

if nintendo really wants to partner up with third paties for collaborations, then if i was them i'd get bethesda to do zelda blizzard to either do pokemon mmo or rts pikmin, and either the cod or halo teams to do metroid.

shackdaddy4094d ago

That would be great if Nintendo wanted to make their games into a glitchy mess.

Instigator4094d ago

If Nintendo did that it would just make the franchises into something they're not, in which case they'd be better off just getting an Elder Scrolls, Diablo/Starcraft and a shooter game for the Wii U.

ElectricKaibutsu4094d ago

I totally agree with the article. There's way too much hand holding in recent Zeldas. Hopefully with the classic style out of order dungeons will come the same sense of exploration and less explanation.

Honestly I really changed my mind on Fi with the remaster because they didn't make her interrupt your gameplay every 5 seconds, that drastically changed my views on her

Inverno76d ago

Technically she's in ToTK but obviously can't take any other form than the sword she was made into. Also the companion feature has been done plenty of times in Zelda, I don't think it'll add anything new. If anything should be brought back it should be the Minish.

Directionless Modern Zelda Should Return to its 3D Roots

Matt from We Game Daily writes "The Legend of Zelda series has gone in a different direction. One which, try as I have, I just can’t get on board with. Here is why I think Zelda should return to its 3D roots."

Amen! A good, tight, Zelda game with a focus on dungeons and puzzles. Let people have the new style Zelda if you gotta, but let us have the OoT style games too. That's not without precedent either, the handheld 2D Zelda's in the style of A Link to the Past etc have coexisted alongside the 3D Zelda's before

FinalFantasyFanatic107d ago

As much as I like BoTW, TotK, I need my traditional Zelda games as well, I could not endlessly play the open world Zelda games, plus it's harder to keep those fresher than the traditional games.

Eidolon107d ago (Edited 107d ago )

BotW was just as fresh to the franchise as OoT was. TokT was great but the next LoZ would have to move from that formula to be fresh again. There's only so much they can do with the hardware. I think they focused too much on making the world big instead impactful. I felt the world was sort of empty and repetitive in TotK, sure there was a lot to do but no more difference a Ubisoft game..

anast106d ago

I wouldn't worry too much. Nintendo knows what they are doing.

Ristul106d ago

Wind Waker had a perfect balance of open world and a cool, well hand-crafted design. Maybe try to keep the open world but put in effort to make more memorable story driven quests and locations.

Zelda Fan Brings Godzilla to Life in Tears of the Kingdom

A fan of The Legend of Zelda has recreated the iconic Japanese monster Godzilla in Tears of the Kingdom using the game's Zonai devices.

I like it would also be cool if some created Dragon Caesar in the game I would love to watch the two going at it.
