The important thing is to not try and make something award winning, but something that actually sells hardware/software.

TrendyGamers4088d ago

Maybe introducing Kevin's brother, Steven Butler?

Sev4088d ago

Or maybe an actual butler this time... named Alfred. And he refers to the PS4 as Master Wayne.

bicfitness4088d ago

Skip the mascots, just show sexy, mind-blowing games and a $349 price tag. And have the damn thing out in September. If they beat MS to the start, they'll trump this gen.

I'd love it if we just had one sku too. No one really wants the crap sku.

doctorstrange4088d ago

Here's my ad pitch:

"Hey you, go Google how many awesome PS3 exclusives came out in the past 6 years. Yup, that many.

With the PS4, there'll be more. Out now."

aCasualGamer4088d ago

The BBH has done some great ads. This will be an amazing partner for Sony.

Kaz-uya is on a roll bringing Sony back on the map.

Red_Orange_Juice4088d ago

Don't advertise PS4 to core gamers, they just need games.

Muerte24944087d ago

that one way of doing things but given what previous generation have taught us (and advertising 101), you want it to have a mass appeal to it. Consoles that have came out on top have all manage to expand the video game market as a whole. PS1 ability to play CDs, Ps2 ability to play DVD, and Wii with Wii Fitt. I also believe ps3 being one of the best blu-ray players also helped it. I think Ps4 should be like your personal assistant (siri, Svoice, Google Now). One thing people have to give Nintendo is the Tvii does it right!

bicfitness4087d ago (Edited 4087d ago )

@ Muerte. Historically, its the tech-enthusiasts and fanboys who buy first; those are the ones you need to appeal to at the outset. In any generation. Mass market penetration comes later in the cycle alongside price-drops and family oriented software.

zeee4087d ago

Here is my pitch. Get CHUCK NORRIS in the commercial and make him fight highly detailed, incredibly realistic Kratos or Nathan Drake and let the fight draw or something and have him say a quirky line like "It's tough to win when the competition is this good... even for me!" then the camera pans out. He is actually sitting in his living room, playing a PS4.

The background blurs out, a PS4 image drops in from the top with a great tag line or something. Like they had IT ONLY DOES EVERYTHING. Change it to something else that leaves a great impression.

Tapani4087d ago

I'd prefer two SKU's. One for rich bastards, and one for poor (old) students like me with a contract!

Doesn't hurt anyone, right? Plus, you could reach a bigger market with a less steep price point.

I'm all for options!

I don't know why, but I sort of feel like PS4 will dominate the next generation. Maybe it's because MS proved lackluster twice, and Nintendo didn't bring anything nearly as revolutionary to the table as motion controls did. After all, touch is not a new thing for home consoles, motion was.

Also, I would like to return to the old school ads they had in the 90s and early 2000s. Some of those campaigns were interesting and out-of-the-box thinking :) (freaky as hell, too!)

No more PLAYING NUT OUTSIIIIIDE disasters, hopefully. Unless that was the guys before them...but those ads came out around 2005/2006.

Panthers4087d ago

The first PS3 ads were worse.

But then I loved the ads with Ladies and Gentlemen playing.

Gamer19824087d ago

They need a new ad agency as the one they had clearly wasnt working! Partly why Xbox was so dominant was ads. You hardly saw ads for PS3 compared to 360 in the states. I know this and I like in the UK!

grailly4087d ago

I think the amount of ads doesn't have much to do with the ad agency, it's more about budget.

adorie4087d ago

Doesn't ms have their own ad agency? Lol. I could be wrong though.

UltraVegito4087d ago

Maybe with this newly created ad division sony will finally make it clear with consumers on what they have to offer.

showtimefolks4087d ago

I know Sony doesn't advertise enough but even when they did hey dnt show what they are selling ps3 wise. Even in their TV commercials they show their other products. Just focus on one at a time

Watch the resistance 3 ad and it's more for Kevin butter and ps move than actually showing how great resistance3 is.

Show gameplay
Show block buster moments
Show what reviewers are saying

Add kickass music to that, no need for any mascots

Sony Publish quality games let that quality show itself. Adding mascots only takes away from the product itself

Michael was good I don't see why they fired themm, although they did Kevin Butler aswell which was the best thing which came out of them

Sony are really trimming the fat latley...getting in shape and cutting the weak loose ends from this gen.

doctorstrange4088d ago

VentureBeat went with "fired" in the title, but it was a 6 year long relationship that came to an end after both BBH and Deutsch pitched ideas.

But yeah, it's been 6 years, a fresh company for a new console makes sense.

Donnieboi4088d ago (Edited 4088d ago )

As a hardcore gaming enthusiast, Michael commercials were okay for me. But to the average gamer (not even necessarily a casual gamer), the Michael commercials came off as a bit geeky and cringe-worthy. I mean, u have all these grown men dressed up as fictional characters, yelling out "for michael" and the point/message of all that is not made entirely clear to the average person watching the video. It looked like a strange, dark, weird cosplay convention. Every facet of those commercials had "insider" clues to them that only hardcore gamers (like the type to make n4g accounts) would understand. So much of the commercial's message was understated, making it feel like the average gamer had to decifer it. The hardcore gamer may understand what's going on, but then again the hardcore gamer already keeps up with the happenings in the industry.

So, I think that showing ACTUAL gameplay footage, mentioning positive review ratings in the advertising, etc is a smart way to go. No gimmicks.

grailly4087d ago

agreed, I think all the live action stuff didn't hit with the public.

remanutd554088d ago

Well while the Michael ad was good, that was the only good thing to come out from them lol, if i were sony i would hire actual playstation network users, they have the passion and i think some of them would do a better job than all those marketing companies lol.

i would love to see " Universe of Entertainment" coming back again with a new slogan for psvita " Entertainment on the Go"

000014088d ago

please no weird crying baby student film commercials

mushroomwig4088d ago

Or those "This is living" adverts that appeared when the system first launched. Keep it simple and to the point.

Soldierone4088d ago

If this means MORE ads then fine, thats great. However this company came up with really good ad ideas this generation. The problem wasn't the content, it was the lack of slots. It took them a while to get away from "being serious" and to Kevin Butler, but even the serious ones put interest in things.

Like I said, more slots, thats all they need. You can have the worst commercials ever, but have enough slots to hammer it home, and you are gold. Look at Geico.

Good informative video in post, but did you notice something in the video that maybe very interesting in further development's for VR in PSVR?

Something Many might have not caught on about PSVR, and its a really good idea to have the Headset built with this functionality in the headset, and its pretty good that it's included..
I know what it is, I want to see if other people caught it..Hint: it has to do with tracking in VR!
Take careful notice in the 1min 9 to 12 second's of the video..

It's there. And it's a real further Key what Sony has intended to add with PSVR in the future of its tracking.

NET_Nomad2785d ago (Edited 2665d ago )

Interesting… notice that during 0:22 – 0:24 of the video, 3 black bands appear, quickly whip around then disappear into PS VR. I think those 3 black bands hint at PS4 Neo's exterior design. [1]

Console Wars - World War Console Part IV

Mark Kriska of Mammoth Gamers continues his console wars piece with a closer look at the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii.

This article is wrong in some aspects.

- PS3 has a successful E3 2005. Other than the questionable boomerang controller, everyone was excited about the console. It was E3 2006 that ruffled people's feathers.

- Xbox 360 actually had the slowest start of all 7th gen consoles. PS3 and Wii sold at a faster rate at their respective launches and all throughout most of the generation.

- How can you say that PSN failed? It implemented many features that we take for granted nowadays such as using actual local currency instead of a contrived points system, not locking many of the console's functionalities behind a paywall, having Cross-Buy right out of the gate starting with PS1 Classics, offering AAA games release day one along with the retail version, allowing Remote Play to be accessed anywhere in the world, starting out the gate with dedicated servers, offering a subscription service that gives plenty of value via PS+, and it was nowhere as restrictive as XBL. That sounds like a success to me.

- PS3 actually came in second place because it was always selling at a faster pace than 360 since day one when you align their launches. PS3 ended up selling 86 million while 360 sold 85 million. This is significant because PS3 had one less year on the market and was more expensive throughout most of its life compared to the 360.

- Xbox 360 may have ended up being the favorite platform in North America, but you can't say the same for the rest of the world. In regions such as Europe, Asia, and RoW the PS3 and Wii were always more prominent. That's why those platforms were able to outsell 360 in total sales.
