Sony May Not Announce The PS4 February 2013

From the moment Sony announced their February 20th event, the news reports have all came to the idea that the event will be the announcement of the PS4. Most of this information originates from a Wall Street Journal article that cites “sources” but nothing more. There is a possibility this announcement will not be the big PS4 reveal everyone is expecting.

I think it may be true though. With The Last of Us launching soon and the feeling that PS3 is not actually done yet, it may not be the most efficient move to announce the PS4 now.

The more I think about it, the more I have my doubts about this announcement.

Maybe they'll introduce some kind of new online Playstation service that will later be used in the PS4? Maybe some kind of Steam for all Playstation 1-2-3-4 games? Or maybe some completely new concept for an online platform? That would explain "the future of Playstation"

The February 20th teaser has amassed nearly 5 million views on the single PlayStation Youtube channel. Everyone expects PlayStation 4, and Sony would be foolish to not reveal the console with all this hype in their favour. There really is no reason for it not to be, they have all year to roll out the surprises while maintaining buzz around their PS3 exclusives.

Every gamer out there is aware of the fact that we are pretty much in the last year of the current console cycle and when Sony then announces an event that is being streamed, with press and shareholders attending, everyone out there is going to say that it has to be the PS4. Everyone is expecting it to be shown.

When the 'See The Future' video came out people were almost instantly talking about the next gen PS. And with that being said, just think about what would happen if Sony won't announce it, they would get bashed by the whole gaming community and I'm sure this time, that they do not want to cause any bad press for the future.

Everyone is expecting a PS4 announcement, it would be suicide to not mention it atleast.

This wouldn't hinder sales for either GOW: Ascension, Last of Us or Beyond: Two souls. Why would it? PS4 is coming... but that doesn't mean we should all have a dry season of non gaming... we should still buy these awesome games while we're waiting for PS4.

There is no doubt imo that they will announce it, there is absolutely no reason to NOT announce the next console on the "here is the future of playstation" event. Would be suicide.

There are a number of blockbuster PS3 games coming out this year and just like the PS2 proved it will be around for a bit during the PS4's infancy. It is more likely than not that Sony WILL BE announcing the PS4. If not, they would have absolutely shut down all of the speculation with a definitive statement that the rumors are all wrong. If they do not reveal the PS4 at the February event, they will face unbelievably negative press and ire, even from the fanboys. Plus, they would leave the door open for MS to trump them with the NextBox announcement.

So, we all need to wait and see, but it would be the worst PR move Sony could make if this is not what it seems.

I agree with JoGam. Sony would be throwing their own hardware icons under the bus. It's, in a way, branding blasphemy.

First off, the teaser video:

X, square, triangle, circle. It focused not only on the iconic shapes, but also on their colors. This is a hardware announcement. It's no Playstation Store announcement (that logo has monochromatic symbols), nor is it Gaikai (it doesn't have anything to do with hardware).

If it's hardware, then what are we left with? Three possibilities: the PS4, a new PS3 iteration, or a new Move controller (as the article suggested).

Those last two seem okay until you consider the second factor: The event.

Journalists are being invited to an event to see this thing. Events cost a lot of money to put on - if you're flying press out, you've gotta pay for those flights, hotels, food, etc. If not, journalism outlets are *sending* those people on their tab. If this is an event for a new iteration of the PS3, which they've known about for a while, or a new color, it would be a fiasco.

This isn't some stupid rumor thingy - the biggest names in the press are pretty solid about this being a PS4 announcement. Sony doesn't have the wiggle room to depress the press and enthusiasts again.

Then there's the new Move possibility. Why? Is Sony suddenly going to make a PS3 push with new Move games, because they sold so freaking well before? Not at all. If anything, a new Move controller would be connected to the PS4. And why would they release info on a PS4 controller without announcing that the system itself is indeed a thing?

There's maybe one other possibility. Perhaps there's a new streaming tech that'll let you both stream your PS3 games to your Vita (like an uber-Remote Play), and control PS3 games *with* your Vita. If that's the case, there's Sony's answer to the Wii U, and they'll put that in the new PS4, therefore both selling Vitas and taking away the Big N's one huge advantage in the hardware department. That... would be awesome. So... if it's not the PS4, it still may be great.

I am thinking that they won't reveal the PS4 yet, but might see some tech demos that will showcase the power of the PS4 or at least what their vision is, hence See the future.

The actual console might be revealed at E3 and a price and the controller (if there is anything special, or it's a new design) closer to launch.

What I mean Kingdom Come is that they will only tease it. Of course they will talk about the PS4, but it won't be a full reveal. We might not even get a final name, but a codename like NGP when Vita was first shown.

Thinking by your logic though, It would also be great if they do reveal the PS4 and spend the time talking about capabilities, etc (maybe not specs though) and then use E3 to announce games for it.

Anyways, whatever I think or you think is only speculation by now, since no one knows what they will be showing at the event. They also have the Vita so they might use time for it too.

I'm one of the bigger Sony fans on this site, not extreme or anything, but have an affection for all things PS. And even I have to say just showing some demos without any substance to the hardware would be a bad idea.

While I believe the games themselves are more important overall, when it comes to a new generation of hardware, something has to be said about it and what it means for the future of the games we play. Tech demos just don't do that, however they can show off some of the capabilities of the machine, but without context they are meaningless.

I'm sure they won't release full specs of the machine, or likely even all of it's features...some of those may not even be ironed out yet. But if they're going to do a PS4 announcement, then there needs to be enough substantial information for prospective buyers to decide if they want to upgrade early, or wait until there is more value in it.

I imagine overall they will reserve quite a bit of information until E3, with articles popping up about features of the machine that will be showed off at that time, and instead focus on the major selling points of the machine during the announcement. The reason for this is because it frees up time during E3 to focus on the things that make it have more value for the consumer. It also gives them time to gauge consumer reaction to the announced features to see how much time they need to give it during E3 or GDC.

Probably what we'll see is the major focus of the machines selling points...much like the tablet controller was shown off for the Wii U. If Gaikai is part of the PS4 then expect them to spend some time on that as well. You can also expect some mega-ton announcement on at least one game due during the launch window. It is up to Sony to show the masses that they are going to be relevant on the next gen console release. It's something they only marginally did with the PS3 release, and I'm sure they won't make the same mistake again. Sony are leaders in the industry, along with MS/Nintendo, and lately they've been on a roll when it comes to hype. It reminds me a lot of their early PS2 days, and was woefully non-existant in the early PS3 days.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. If you mean that Gaikai will serve PS4 games to the PS3 then I think, while possible, it's highly improbable. If people can stream games to the PS3 in PS4 quality, then there is little incentive for them to upgrade. I would just because I like to own my games and streaming isn't ideal for me, but it would be suitable for lots of people. If Sony wants to push consoles to a point where the actual hardware doesn't matter, then they will start that with the next generation, with a machine that is designed around that principle in part. The PS3 isn't that. Changing the actual principles of their PS3 console this late in the game is not ideal, albeit it does have advantages from a business standpoint. I feel, however, that the market just isn't ready for a DD future.

Well, it was only teased last Friday. Given the weekend they maybe have one or two more days to actually deny the rumors. Something of that caliber would obviously have to be made tactfully so if this were the case I'd prefer they get the denial right instead of some half-assed PR statement that would just send the community into an uproar anyways. Seriously listen. Sony has publicly stated that they will let MS make the first move. If they announce this early they give MS the chance to gain the upper hand in the year or two left before they release their next console. Why would Sony willingly do that? They're going to let MS announce first, show the public what they've developed, then announce the PS4. Then if MS steals any of their ideas the entire world will know it. The beginning of this new generation is critical, and Sony is not going to blow it to succumb to inpatient fanboys. Expect an E3 announcement on PS4 at the very earliest, but only if MS announces first.

Sony still has a lot of mileage left on PS3 will the tonne of great titles coming out in the next few months. They can sit back and chill, and then gain a secure hand when they choose to announce. It sucks, but it's smart business.

See the future, don't talk BS, this is PS4. I.E the future. They're doing what they did with VITA, simple as. And Re the games, PS3's meant to have a 10 yr live span, we've got what? 4 more yrs. PS2's only just stopped being made. Hardware prices can still drop too. What's not to say the ps3 would drop £100ish on PS4's release date? Gaikai= PS4 FULL backwards compatibility without half/ 2-3s a PS3 in the PS4.

I'm certain its PS4. However, its also a calculated risk...as it WILL affect sales of current ps3 consoles and games.

And that's Sonys fault. They've aligned themselves with high price points on new console releases.

If they are watching the economy and truly want to eat some of MS mind share in North America, they'll hit that $299.99 rumored price.

But people expect $399 - $499......and that means majority of buyers will need to save for an Xmas launch (likely).

Remember....your not just buying a ps4. Your going to want 2 games likely, a second controller and potential sub service.
Whether psn remains free online play will be a factor too.

So...ps4 launch, will be interesting.

I hope Sony takes a cue from MS and has a sub pur have deal.
You can buy a 360 for $99+2yrs of live for $16 (or $14 I forget)a month. You'll pay more but get to have it at a time you might otherwise can't afford $300 in one shot.

Using the fact that new games are coming for ps3 is nothing because when ps3 came out there were still new ps2 games coming out for almost a year or two.

Gakai is not the future of playsation, It will help and could provide a new direction over just using consoles to game with.
