Disney Infinity: No Girls Allowed?

Though Disney Infinity certainly looks promising, the strange lack of female characters and female-oriented properties is really disheartening. Smart When Shouting examines why this is and questions why, for a company known for their Princesses, Disney's new, major game has nothing targeted at girls.

Pretttty sure saw Mrs. Incredible in there. She's like the cool mom you let into your fort to give you cookies though. Also Jessie and Violet but yeah its strange how like Sally from Nightmare b4 Xmas and Elizabeth Swann arent there...but given the fact this game doesnt shy away from being a cash whore they'll be adon characters/

NBT914101d ago

Pretty much. There are a few female characters, there will be more soon after.
It wouldn't surprise me if, later down the line and success not withstanding, they release say, Disney Princess sets specifically aimed at girls to be honest.

3-4-54100d ago

It's probably already in the works.

There are like 30 princess's to choose from so I'm sure it would be done. It makes sense to get girls at a young age into gaming like more guys were when they were young.

Good marketing.

admiralvic4101d ago

Most iconic characters are male, so that's not really surprising. Also I think if we only saw the princesses... what do you want to bet this article would be "Why doesn't Disney Infinity show females in other roles?"

PopRocks3594101d ago

What about Rapunzel from Tangled? Or Jasmine from Aladdin? They're both strong and iconic female leads who have at one point or another proven themselves versatile in battle before. Not to mention Merida from Brave. There are many to choose from, they just haven't opted to go there it seems.

Oh we'll, I'm happy about the inclusion of Violet and Vanellope.

If it was another company, you'd have a valid point. But this is DISNEY Infinity, a game named after a company known for their female characters more than just about anything else.

TMRBac4101d ago

Um... multiple girls already in just the first wave. Jesse from Toy Story and Rapunzel, at minimum, will surely immediately follow.

LeiAndLove4100d ago

All of this is noted in the article, and Rapunzel has not been confirmed or shown in any marketing so far (also noted). The issue is that, for a company known for having a huge cast of popular female characters, the game hasn't shown or marketed any that are the actual protagonist of their own movie. Mrs. Incredible is the closest we've seen, and even she is labeled in Infinity as a sidekick.

TheComedian4101d ago

Yeah since we have seen first hand how well received female characters are in video games. Not by males mind you but by females. Every female character gets torn to pieces on how she conforms to some sexist oversexualized patriarhical ideal even when there is no such thing to be found. The the developers get attacked as sexist bigoted misogynists. Better omit them altogether. Ommision attracts less attention.

LeiAndLove4100d ago

The difference is that this is by Disney, a company known for their female characters. And, especially considering how well recieved their recent female characters have been (think Tiana, Rapunzel, and Vanellope), your argument is bunk.

TheComedian4100d ago

When they attacked characters like female Shepard or Samus (also well know beloved characters) my argument is anything BUT bunk. I wish not to overanalyze facts over the internet but I'll leave you with something to think about.
In the future there will be a lot less female characters which is sad really.

Blastoise4101d ago (Edited 4101d ago )

What about the old classics? they're really missing out on a huge market by not including ariel, cinderella, snow white, belle, alice ect. I imagine they'll be included at some point though

also, sully from monsters inc looks weird :(

Is Disney Infinity Coming To The PS5 & Xbox Series X?

There is a huge gap in the market at the moment. There aren’t many (if any) toys-to-life games available for the two consoles yet. A reboot or remake of the game would work so well, especially with Disney’s current roster of characters, films and TV shows.

Did Disney sell the rights to Activision? I never knew they had the rights to Disney Infinity.

They DO have the rights to Skylanders though.

Plus there's a financial reason every publisher gave up on the "toys to life" thing. So I doubt they'll revive any of them.

BrainSyphoned803d ago (Edited 803d ago )

It wasnt Skylanders fault Activision squeezed the cow too hard.

"During its earning calls, Activision confirmed that Skylanders: Swap Force had made them more money than Call of Duty: Ghosts. Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed the numbers, putting Skylanders at a whopping $2 billion in revenue after it sold 175 million toys.May 7, 2014"

"Skylanders Reached the Milestone of 250 million figures sold in 2015 and passed $3 billion made"

Is it possible Disney Infinity or other toys to games could return, but I'll be honest I really hope they don't come back.

These kinds of games are just another way for the game studios to nickle and dime you for every cent you have.

BLAKHOODe804d ago

Disney Infinity was a fun game I could play with my kid back in the day. I still have it and the 100+ toys and yes, it works on PS5. But my kid is a teenager now and we've both moved on to more serious games.

Fluke_Skywalker804d ago

Exact same thing here, we played Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions. Both were great but are now just two big boxes full of stuff that never gets used.

BLAKHOODe803d ago

We played Lego Dimensions, too.. and I still have all those toys. It also works on PS5.
