A Closer Look: Wind Waker Wii U’s Graphics

GenGAME writes: "Wind Waker HD isn’t just a port of the game running at a higher resolution (a.k.a. Dolphin style); it’s a remake of the game. It’s unclear whether the game will be a complete remake (like what happened with Ocarina of Time 3D) or if it will just be spruced up, but there are some pretty obvious changes to the visual style that have upset more than a few people who love the game for its art direction."

Exactly what I had been saying earlier. This is not the same as when Sony or MS gets an HD collection and all the developer has done is increase the texture resolutions or improve the native resolution of the game.

This game is using entirely new assets built from the ground up using a hybrid visual style of Skyward Sword and Wind Waker.

I can't wait to play this game again, I felt that Wind Waker was under appreciated because of it's departure to convention with it's cartoon looking visuals.

Was a very challenging and rewarding game however, so this will be a no-brainer purchase for me.

I think what microsoft did for halo ce anniversary was pretty cool and it wasn't just a simple upgrade in textures.

@aviator189

Highly agreed, even more cool that you could switch inbetween the the old game and back at a click of a button.

Although if they make actual big changes to the gameplay (as they have hinted) that might not be possible.

I'm not necessarily sure if its a hybrid of Skyward Sword and Wind Waker... The shadows and overall graphical look of the game gives me déjà vu in regards to Nintendo Land.

But you are correct, these are new assets being used to recreate the game. I have to wonder if it will be like the 3DS remakes where they use the original code or if they're recreating even the code from the ground up as well. It will also be interesting to find out how the game feels from a gameplay standpoint as well.

Either way, can't wait for this either.

@disagree

Gee, that's not typical. /s Care to provide an argument with that?

The Water in WWHD is most likely going to be more realistic = sailing will probably feel like a new mechanic :)

I'm hoping the fix the tri-force hunt quest too. Haven't gotten there yet but I'm waiting to play the other 80% of WW on Wii U.

There are a few things I heard could maybe need adjusting but that game was great from the first few hours I played.

wishingW3L4096d ago

they butchered the art-style. Now the character models look like plastic dolls and the environments looks like they were made with cardboard box.

Agreed,The characters models in Wind Waker HD now look like plastic dolls.

By judging the WW still image, I can tell not much work was put in to the textures, just plain drag and drop textures with basic lighting.

As long as they put back in the scrapped dungeons, everyone will be happy and buy it; nuff said.

I'd put Street Fighter 2 over 3. 2 and all its different versions dominated the arcade scene back in the day in a way that 3 never did.

Abear21166d ago

Agreed, Same with Metal Gear Solid imo. Came for Bioshock and was not disappointed. Would easily put Burger Time or Space Taxi over tempest. Also, OG Sim City and Oregon Trail. Mario 64 as well. Just too many!

Abear21166d ago

Never played it I gotta get on this one

Double_O_Revan166d ago

Me too. I didn't have a GC until way later and never played it. I've been waiting on Nintendo to release the HD edition on the Switch for forever, but they just won't!

FinalFantasyFanatic166d ago

I never bought a Gamecube, I've always had an urge to play this game, maybe it'll get a remaster in the future.

LoveSpuds165d ago

I played it on WiiU for the first time and it remains my fave Zelda game to date. So much character and a real sense of exploration without the open world bloat.

Petebloodyonion166d ago

Ms Pacman?
Robotron?
SSF2 Turbo over 3 simply by the 10000000000's ports of the game we're still having
Castlevania SOTN?
Zelda Link to the Past over Wind Waker
Super Mario Bros 3?
Chrono Trigger?
Resident evil4?
COD MW2 (the original)?
Uncharted 2
Metal Gear Solid?

Here's my reasoning for all of them versus the list proposed in the article.
They are still quite enjoyable from start to finish on their original platform, unlike some Wind Waker or Okami that are fun when you play the remastered version (unless you call: forced to watch a 20-minute cutscene or have to blow for wind chance constantly fun).
Some of them are the pinnacle of what the console could do (MGS, Chrono, MGS)
Lots of them are still considered the go-to-go game for their genre.

Said it before but Heart of Darkness is truly a timeless gem.
