Capcom devs describe the 'long-distance romance' with Ninja Theory that led to DmC

The video-game industry is littered with stories of game developers in the U.S. and Europe trying to work with publishers in Japan and finding it a painful experience. While the collaboration between Capcom and England-based Ninja Theory wound up producing the fairly well-reviewed DmC: Devil May Cry, it was far from smooth sailing from start to finish for the three-year-long project.

We wanted a cheap reboot so we hired cheap devs....just like RE ORC with Slant Six

RuperttheBear4093d ago

I've been playing DMC on my pc, it's a great game.

zerocrossing4093d ago

No one is disputing that, it's just not a great DMC game.

RuperttheBear4093d ago

He said -

'We wanted a cheap reboot so we hired cheap devs'

They've delivered and made a great game, so he must be wrong. It wasn't a cheap reboot, it must have cost a load, and the devs made a great job out of it.

Your opinion of whether it is a great DMC game is subjective. But what he said is totally false.

InMyOpinion4093d ago

DMC fans would only be happy if they made a carbon copy of DMC 1.

Sevir4093d ago

Got a carbon copy of DMC 1 and 3 in the form of DMC4 and they bitched about that too... DmC is rated higher than DMC4 its just funny to see really.

people can admit its a great game but not a great DmC game. That notion that DmC isn't a great DMC game is pure opinion and highly subjective to anyone's standards... Honestly if you fans say its action great game but not a great DMC game then somewhere along the line of gaming you lost it! DmC is an Action game first and foremost like the ones that came before it so if its a great action then the title has lived up to the expectations of the previous games n the franchise! And already its better than 2 games in the franchise

zerocrossing4093d ago (Edited 4093d ago )

The fact that you think it's great is also entirely subjective, it doesn't make you right as much is it doesn't make me wrong.

The point a lot of people are missing is, regardless of the hair change and the arrogance of the dev team, many of the core fans still just don't like DmC because it lacks the appeal of the originals, as awful as DMC2 was at least it felt like a DMC game.

If you're new to the franchise and enjoy it fair enough, if you're a long time fan of the franchise and still find you enjoy DmC that's also fine, but don't try making out like DmC is an overall improvement on the franchise when it's just a different take on it that was bound to appeal more towards some than others.

DMC3 still stands head and shoulders over DmC as the better game, you're welcome to disagree but it was a much funner, more well polished and enjoyable game IMO.

Blacktric4093d ago (Edited 4093d ago )

"Your opinion of whether it is a great DMC game is subjective"

"They've delivered and made a great game,"

Oh God my head is spinning from too much "Knights Of The "Told" Republic" irony...

-----------------------------

"Those same Fans that continue to bitch about this reboot Got a carbon copy of DMC 1 and 3 in the form of DMC4 and they bitched about that too..."

A game that has tons of gameplay improvements and that runs on 60 FPS (opposed to 30 FPS of first DMC) is a carbon copy? Good one.

"DmC is rated higher than DMC4 its just funny to see really.""

Thinking ratings mean crap in the generation we are in and possibly the future ones...

ahahaha oh wow... And for someone who is keen to use the word "bitch" a lot, you seem to do a lot of that yourself.

wishingW3L4093d ago (Edited 4093d ago )

@Sevir what you lost is logical thinking. Try to use it... DmC and DMC are completely different games. =/

********SPOILERS********

Vergil killing a pregnant demon with a sniper. Dante saying F-bombs after every single line of dialogue. Mundus having sex with a demon. Combos that are almost on cruise control. Where are the equivalent of Lady or Trish? What happened with the quirky mood? DmC is really serious compared to the original games and it takes way too seriously.
**************************

Do these things sound like a DMC game to you? Just take the names out and this is a completely new IP (hence why we say a bad DMC game). It was the same with FF13. No exploration, no towns, no NPC's, only corridors, lvl caps, no side-quests, etc. And FF not only had all of that but it innovated at the same time too on each new entry. It gave us new/good stories (now we have 3 FF13s!!), battle system, music, characters etc.

VileAndVicious4093d ago

@zero

It's all about perspective, personally while I liked. DMC3 I never thought it was the best in series. IMO the original was, and that's were I think the division comes in. Most people that I know of that really enjoyed the original DMC also enjoyed DmC quite a bit. Because. It's closest to DMC in terms of atmosphere and game play. So for those that enjoyed the crazy super over the top frantic game play from the third and fourth installments might have issues with the reboot, as they play differently but that's always been the case when it comes to 1,2 and 3,4. IMO the core mechanicis still llargely the same.

zerocrossing4093d ago

@VileAndVicious

I do agree with you there.

DMC 2,3 and 4 weren't made by the same guy who created the 1st game, and after DMC2 flopped they probably felt like they needed to make a drastic change and that's probably why DMC3 and DMC4 felt more corny and over the top in comparison.

Like I said DmC is a great stand alone game but doesn't do much for me as a DMC game, I can see why other people would like it though so Im not going to say it's bad and just simply say it's not for me.

I'd say it was a pretty good choice, considering they turned out the best Devil May Cry game of the whole series.

In my opinion of course.

~Eagerly awaiting the dozens of Disagrees I will soon have~

theWB274093d ago

Because most of the people that will disagree with you..secretly bought, played, and loved the game. I've never understood why people complained about the new Dante. Because he was only ever "Dante" for 1.5 games. DMC3 and the little we got to play with him in DMC4. DMC1 and 2 he was nothing but silent emo character who looked different in each of the games.

zerocrossing4093d ago

Of course you'll get disagrees for that statement.

DmC has too much holding it back to be the best of the franchise, DMC3 still holds that crown IMO.

DragonKnight4093d ago

"considering they turned out the best Devil May Cry game of the whole series."

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! That was a goo... oh wait. Are you serious?

@theWB27: given that the sales of this game are the worst in the series so far, your assumption that most "secretly bought, played, and loved the game" is likely not the case.

Root4093d ago (Edited 4093d ago )

"Because most of the people that will disagree with you..secretly bought, played, and loved the game"

Hey looks like we have Mystic Meg over here....will you tell me if I'll ever find love and where my house keys are.

"he was nothing but silent emo character who looked different in each of the games."

He is more of an emo douche bag now them he was then. Oh and he did talk he had better dialogue then "F*** You" "F*** You" "F*** You" <flip someone off here and here>

He looked different because he was younger/older

Sevir4093d ago

Because "I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with LIIIIIGHT" won soo man awards for best dialog! Dude give it a rest. quit pretending Capcom Made any of the past DMC games with any kind of remarkable or note worthy story and dialog anyone could follow without laughing at its inconsistencies. DMC games NEVER had anywhere near good dialog or a story you could follow.

You're grasping at straws because This current representation of Dante swears more than the silent character of yesteryears. keep focusing on one isolated instance in the game where he swears profusely! It doesn't represent the whole game.

Hozi4093d ago

The game is awesome. Who cares if Dante is a bit diff. looking. He's still kickass. Plus have you played it on PC?

They should allow NT to re creat Onimusha or Dino Crysis.

Minato-Namikaze4093d ago

Please don't mention ninja theory and onimusha. I really want to play a new onimusha.

ThanatosDMC4093d ago (Edited 4093d ago )

They're gonna make Samanosuke look like Taneem.... lol

Hozi4093d ago

@Minato-Namikaze

LOL...Only reason I mention it is because Capcom don't seem to have time to do it. I'd rather NT make it than not get anything at all. That's all.

zerocrossing4093d ago (Edited 4093d ago )

double post

Acquiescence4093d ago

It's an excellent game. Already pining for a sequel.

theWB274093d ago

@DragonKnight- most people that will disagree with his statement on this site. I didnt say this game has sold the most in the series. I highly doubt the amount of people that will comment on this article and disagree with him would tip the scale of sales overall.

DragonKnight4093d ago

Irrelevant. I disagree, and I don't now nor ever intend to own this game. Even if it were given to me as a gift I wouldn't put it in my console and I know enough people feel the same way. You're making an assumption that is impossible to prove and is more likely to be false than true. Especially if we extrapolate from the general sales reception that exists right now, we can see that the fans saying they aren't going to buy this game are sticking to that.

theWB274093d ago

Its irrelavant that you misconstrued my comment. This is my last bubble. Im making an assumption then you turn around and do the same by saying its more likely to be false than true. You want to go by sales when the economy is worse....most of the DMC fans from years past have grown up with responsibilities and use their money for other things. Could it be that Dante isnt the same character to the younger generation than it was back then. You're also making an assumption with knowing enough people wont...is this just your circle of friends?? Or you going off the internet where people spout their hate but do you HONESTLY know these same people didnt go buy it anyway?

DragonKnight4093d ago

It is more likely to be false than true when the numbers say that, so far, DmC is the worst selling game in the series. That means more people AREN'T buying it than are. That's what you call a guess backed by numbers, not by sentiment.

"You want to go by sales when the economy is worse....most of the DMC fans from years past have grown up with responsibilities and use their money for other things."

Copout argument to avoid the truth. If people can buy CoD or Halo 4, they can buy DmC.

"Could it be that Dante isnt the same character to the younger generation than it was back then. "

Also irrelevant. Dante means nothing to the new generation, hence he doesn't affect sales to the people unfamiliar with the series. You're the one talking about haters secretly buying this game, haters that know the history of the series.

"You're also making an assumption with knowing enough people wont...is this just your circle of friends?? Or you going off the internet where people spout their hate but do you HONESTLY know these same people didnt go buy it anyway?"

Rather than go into a long explanation of who I know that's not buying it and why, I'll tell you that not only do I know, actually know, people who aren't going to buy this game due to a myriad of reasons, but I also know people who have removed people from the PSN friendlist just because said friend bought DmC.

You are underestimating the fans of the older series, and overestimating the desire for DmC.

Alos884093d ago

I can't help but think that some of the hate for DMC could have been avoided if Taneem hadn't badmouthed the original games like an idiot.

Kyosuke_Sanada4093d ago (Edited 4093d ago )

Agreed, if him and most developers this generation kept a cork in their gob then a lot of these releases would have been much better off. Alas, too many of them think they are celebrities and contributes to the reason why the gaming industry will never be taken seriously.

ThanatosDMC4093d ago

Well also the fact that they watered down the best DMC gameplay combat from DMC4 Dante doesnt help. Style switching on the fly was a godly ability that made DMC4 Dante so awesome.
