Rumor: Microsoft trademarks "Marlow Briggs," possible character for spinoff title?

Microsoft may have very special plans for a yet-unknown charterer in their Gears of War franchise, if their latest exploits in trademarking are any indication.

Knight_Crawler4103d ago (Edited 4103d ago )

Megaton news: MS purchases EPIC games - the character in the Samaritan demo is called Marlow Briggs ;)

@SuperLube - I agree with you...Judgement and the new God of War game feel forced on and think MS and Sony should have waited till next gen to release them.

Oh well someone will always buy what every MS and Sony throws at them so they will continue to milk games.

Gildarts4103d ago

@Knight crawler
that is more likely then it being related to gears of war for starters there is very little information about Jordan Briggs even on the Wiki, second Briggs is a pretty common last name it could be anyone, then third Microsoft doesn't own the gears of war IP why would they trademark a character for a franchise they don't really own? The fact that they have gone trough the trouble of trademarking this awesome name means it is going to be big. NO, Marlow Briggs is probably the name of the main character for the "Halo-killer" Blacktusk is working on.

kratos174103d ago

I really hope this doesn't become a yearly franchise.

Blank4103d ago

Im hoping for the samething I love gears dont get me wrong but by the way judgement is being recieved and lackluster hype is a telling sign now as for my personal opinion about judgement is that I am gonna pick it up sooner or later for sure just for the lore but with baird as the main focus aint exactly motivating me to get it ASAP : /

SuperLupe4103d ago (Edited 4103d ago )

It definately won't be a Gears spin-off ... espeicially after they see Judgement's sales.

It's a bit off topic but Gears Judgement is one of the most unnecessary entries in a good series I've seen in a long time. Everythig was perfect with it ending with Gears 3. It would have been great to not see anymore Gears until next gen ... you know keep us hungry for more.

And I think the lack of "hype" around the game means I'm not the only 360 owner who thinks that.

showtimefolks4103d ago

while i agree with you you can't just expect the publishers to give up on their Ips.

Welshy4103d ago

There is a difference between "giving up" on an IP and giving it a break to allow some fan anticipation to build, especially with next gen around the corner.

What's the big hurry to shove another Gears game out the door? Like SuperLupe said, there is a severe lack of excitement for Gears judgement to the extent i honestly don't recall anyone talking about it really since E3 except maybe Microsoft.

If MS insist on sticking with the same IP's they need to keep them fresh because if people tire of Halo and Gears, the nextbox is going to have a rough time in the AAA exclusive department.

showtimefolks4103d ago

TheFaceless

i agree but i don't see them resting this IP. and this one will sell 3-5 million too

when games keep on selling these publishers will keep making them, its simple supply and demand.

if i am not interested in a game i wait for a huge price drop before picking it up, the only way to speak with the publishers is with out wallets

hazardman4103d ago

Well I for one won't be getting any more Gears of War games. Cliffy is no longer on aboard so why would I want to play watered down Gears. I swear everytime I saw Cliffy playing Gears at E3 I just knew I had to get it.

Munky4103d ago

I hope Epic convinces MS to bump up the amount of RAM in the Nextbox the same way it convinced them with the 360.

Belking4103d ago

I think MS next system will have the rumored 8gb of RAM which should give it an edge when it comes to certain functions like the dashboard. I also think this extra ram will allow us to use the dashboard while playing games too.

Munky4103d ago (Edited 4103d ago )

That's cool, but shouldn't the focus be on game performance? What I'm hoping is that they choose to have 8GB of DDR5 instead of DDR3. Overkill I know, but why not MS use all the money they banked this gen towards their next console to make a monster machine.

@munky

People tend to ran away from monster.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

CrimsonWing692h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker2h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing691h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos7h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto7h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger886h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).

I never got around to mass effect - I’m skeptical that it would hold up if I were to try it now

Furesis1d ago

I would say it does. The combat is a bit shit for todays standards but everything else is great.

It's worth a play through today.
