5 reasons why the next Call of Duty wont be released on next gen consoles

Gadget Mill: We’ve heard it already a while back; a leaked developer CV was found which shed some light on the next Call of Duty game. The CV listed an unannounced game for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC (maybe even the Wii-U?) from infinity ward with DirectX 11 support. This caused a big fuss amongst the gaming community claiming that this was a sign that the next Call of Duty will be released on next gen consoles. This was of course claimed as the next gen consoles ‘PS4′ and ‘Xbox 720′ were tipped to run DirectX 11 games.

With that said I still don’t think we will see the next Call of Duty game on next gen consoles; so here are 5 reasons to why we wont be seeing Call of Duty going next gen.

I can't really see Activision sitting back for a year and relegating their biggest franchise to "old" consoles. Especially if it gives EA or Ubisoft an opportunity to get in early with Battlefield or Rainbow Six and capitalize on those would-be CoD players looking to get their shooter fix.

This is something Activision knew was coming, and I'm sure Sony and Activision would love to have something as significant as a next-gen CoD on their platform to drive hardware sales early on, so I'd imagine Sony and MS would be doing what they can to make sure CoD is a launch title.

The only reason that I can see for Activision to hold off on a next-gen CoD would be if Bungie has Destiny ready to go.

deadlydragon1214100d ago (Edited 4100d ago )

I personally doubt it. If it is released as soon as next gen starts. It will never be a PS4 launch title if PS4 is released before the next Xbox.

Sony will have to wait until the next Xbox is launched before they can get their paws on that game. I'm just wondering what Microsoft will come up with in terms of exclusivity with Activision for next gen.

SegataShanshiro4099d ago

First it was "Sony made a trrible mistake going in late into this console gen" now everyone is like "Sony should wait!! for the xbox to be released!!!!" funny how they say that now that the sony guy said they would wait, all sony fanbois want sony to be late again....STOP THESE DAMN DOUBLE STANDARDS YOU STUPID SONY SHEEPS

kparks4099d ago

I agree there is no way.. i think the fist cod on next gen will be treyarch well i hope cuz the last MW sucked big time im enjoying blackops 2 tho... but IW is already half way done the next cod as we speak and im sure Treyarch is still throwing ideas around..

JP13694099d ago

You guys do realize that the devs get kits long before the specs are even finalized, right? And don't you think the people responsible for making what is currently the top selling IP in the industry will be among the first to obtain one of these dev kits?
The first four reasons listed in this article are completely baseless. Every time a new generation starts, publishers are forced to develop for a ridiculous number of systems. It's a business and they would be stupid to miss out on any viable platform. The only question is, who gets the port, current gen or next gen? If dev kits did indeed come out late, then it will be the latter of the two and you'll see "next generation" products with a few new bells and whistles that don't really showcase what the new hardware can do. Case in point: Every Madden game that get's released along with a new generation of consoles.
The only plausible reason given is the MS DLC exclusivity deal. But even then, all that means is that they couldn't release DLC until after the successor to the 360 is released. No big deal there, unless it releases more than six months after Sony's new product.
Overall, a poorly reasoned article looking to generate hits by claiming to know something about a couple subjects people are clamoring to know more about.

Red_Orange_Juice4099d ago (Edited 4099d ago )

because it would require a lot of more money put towards development, and COD games are cheap reskined cashins with minimal advancements in mind

I think the idea that CoD would skip a platform like the next Xbox would be ridiculous. MS would likely do anything they can to have it on their platform and equally important would it be for Activision.

I believe a similar situation would apply to the the next Playstation as well.

Being early and available early is key to gaining an advantage next generation, and Activision would spend plentiful of resources to attempt securing their future.

kneon4099d ago

Unless they plan to release on 360/ps3 as well as the next gen consoles then I would expect they will not have next gen console versions.

By the time we see new consoles the 360+ps3 install base will be well past 150 million. Even if they are wildly successful there would be under 20 million Xbox.next+ps4 after 6 months.

So they could never make the kind of numbers they used to if they launch only on the next gen consoles. It may not really be worth the effort and cost until they have been out for a about year and have a decent size install base.

nukeitall4099d ago

@kneon:

Of course it would be on Xbox 360 and PS3. Activision obviously isn't a stupid company.

AngelicIceDiamond4099d ago (Edited 4099d ago )

Sorry but the only game that I'm looking forward to from Activision is Bungie's Destiny. If COD gets released at the same time as Destiny, then my decision is made. And its a easy decision at that.

But realistically Activision would never delay COD for any game. And Destiny will most likely not get released around COD.

So Cod will definitely get released for 720 and PS4 that's a no brainer.

Summons754100d ago

Yeah but next gen cod will be a huge announcement and that won't happen until the consoles are out and as it stands they aren't even announced and probably coming next year.

Not that any of this matters the chanes to cod next gen will be hardly noticeable like every year but it'll sell well cause its next gen and the first title. The year they don't copy paste call of duty, upgrade the graphics, and fix the constant problems the game has every year but thy ignore. I will be shocked, surprised, and maybe actually think about buying it. They had that chance with blops2 but they managed to do nothing to the game besides relabel some mechanics and call it new

PastyGangster4099d ago

Once they go back to their roots as CoD 1 and CoD 2, i'll get back to playing it. I cant stand that stupid perks and killstreak bulls***. Ruins the game imo...

Still play CoD 2 to this day and it runs circles over the MW and BLOPS series.

aceitman4100d ago

well how many systems do u think will be sold if its next gen only , I think it will be a smart move to sell systems to see cod with beefed up graphics and affects. and to the disagrees u know its true it can work it might not , but if there is a game that will sell systems its cod .

UnholyLight4100d ago

Im sure they'll make a CoD launch game. In fact, I'd be willing to bet teams like IW and Treyarch already have an internal team set up to work on a Next Gen CoD already. I mean, the Xbox 360 had CoD 2 at launch (One of my favorite CoD's IMO) and I see no reason why that won't be the same case. Hopefully Sony will have said next gen CoD game since they missed out on CoD 2 due to being out a year later...

Gildarts4100d ago

COD will not be so successful on nextgen consoles, their reign will end once they cone out.

JeffGUNZ4099d ago

Based on what? Do you really think Activision doesn't have a new engine coming for the next gen? This next gen is what will save COD.

AAACE54100d ago (Edited 4100d ago )

Whatever! Like it or not cod has become a staple in gaming. That would be like not releasing a madden or 2k or a fifa game. It just wouldnt make sense not to release. Especially considering the fact that when a new console comes out, gamers pretty much buy anything to justify their new console purchase.

MrBeatdown4099d ago

"I'm sure Sony and Activision would love to have something as significant as a next-gen CoD on their platform..."

Meant to write Microsoft where it says Activision.

Mounce4099d ago

Here's the 1 Reason:

Number of Current-gen consoles sold total. 160+ Million between 360 and PS3.

Number of Next-gen consoles sold - Questionably-not-as-much-as-Th is-gen.

Market potential and users who can buy COD this gen? Moar...

Profit? Moar.

4099d ago
Sarcasm4099d ago

I don't see why they wouldn't. They will come out on BOTH this gen and next gen. It's like Madden, how many years until they stop coming out with the PS2 Madden?

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4099d ago

they will have a last and next gen version like EA..

007Bond4099d ago

2 Different versions on for current other for next with minor graphical improvements.

MoveTheGlow4099d ago (Edited 4099d ago )

The argument the author had was silly. Yes, I think CoD will be a PS3/360 thing, but they'll also release a next-gen upscaled version for sure. Why not? They could lazily add some stuff to it without necessarily making it *for* next gen, and make extra cash from it.

This means, for next-gen buyers, that the first CoD for the system won't be very impressive as compared to when the next-gen market share is immense enough to leave the old systems behind. From Activision's standpoint, so what? They've got a cash cow that still performs. They can afford throw a little money around on next-gen for this one, and then go full steam ahead for the next one.

Edit: *looks up* Wow, I'm preaching to the choir, eh? ;)

showtimefolks4099d ago

Next COD will grace

Current consoles
Wiiu
Ps4
Pc
Xbox720

Maybe vita

Why would activision pass on 2 console bases which are greater than 70 million each for some new ones which will take some time to have big install bases

Expect this to be the case for a lot of games, a lot of early 2013 games will see a porn release later in ps4 and xbo720

Ps3 a d xbox30 will be supported well for next 12-24 months at the very least

Dumb article. COD will be released next Gen. It is a no brainer. Development of a Port of a port of a port.

Soldierone4100d ago

Activision has never cared about COD being cutting edge. Thats what Bungies upcoming game will be for. There will be no doubt the next gen will see COD. First game will be a port, probably be really horrible, then the second will be a substantial upgrade.

-Falaut-4100d ago

(Full Disclosure: Didn't read anything past the headline.)

Yeah. Okay.

Gamer394100d ago (Edited 4100d ago )

I think, CoD MW4 coming new engine first next-xbox 2013 Q4 launch title, and other consoles ps3, 360, WiiU coming old engine.

Ps4 2014.

Players claim Fortnite ruined Call of Duty by letting in more corporate greed

Do you remember what gaming was like before Fortnite entered the gaming space? One of the biggest arguments was about loot boxes. Now we have conversations about crossovers, battle passes, and community outreach.

gamesandwich.com
GoodGuy092d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Idk. Loot boxes did disappear and battle passes and in game purchases are all cosmetic. We get free weapons and maps post launch, any gameplay affecting content. I could care less about all the cosmetics.
I absolutely hated the days where weapons were locked behind a less than 1% chance lootbox pull where it'd take 5+ hours to have enough tokens to do a single pull and lazy remastered/remake maps cost you $15 each wave or $50 for the season pass that you didn't know what you'd get and these maps were only available to those that bought it so you get a smaller pool of players match with.

Tacoboto22h ago

The "good ole days" are actually what drove me away from COD and Halo 3/Reach. Halo 4 becoming a COD-like drove me away from that only a week or so after it launched and I beat its campaign.

It sucked way back then, going a month or two without playing online-shooter-of-the-moment, and then needing to buy a $15 map pack to play with the majority of the population or your favorite playlist. The "community" rejecting Spartan Points in MCC killed that game's support, too. No revenue = no support, plain and simple.

Cacabunga13h ago

That headline could easily be something Spencer could have said 😅 I had to check if it was really an opinion piece

KyRo13h ago

As times gone on, the COD battle pass has got ALOT worse so they can push people to buy the more premium battle pass which itself is a huge rip off and nearly half the price of the base game.

The cosmetics can be fine but they've taken it to far to the point of no return. Why make a military themed game then have rabbits, dinosaurs, cats, rats & z list rappers as skins? You wouldn't add a Lamborghini to a fantasy RPG to replace a horse and you would never see Mario have limb dismemberment because they know what they are. COD is having identity crisis but kids and streamer but then all

franwex23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

Call of duty can simply not copy the bad aspects of Fortnite? Or is that too out of this world? Like COD, a realistic shooter-just HAD to have Nicki Minaj running around? Or super heroes?

Inverno20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

Exactly! Trends don't all need to be followed. Plus where Fortnite got somewhat better with it's monetization, Acti got worse. Or at least Fortnite has lended itself more to the wacky stuff, and has put more effort and quality into that stuff.

jjb198121h ago

I prefer the battle passes with free maps than the $50 season pass that divided the community. I definitely feel that Fortnite had some influence on CoD having loot boxes with Blackout being introduced in 2018 with Black Ops 4.

PRIMORDUS21h ago(Edited 21h ago)

Actually Fortnite bullshit ruined Unreal Tournament. Epic are sellouts and I will never have that shitty store on my PC, fuck them and that shit bag Tim Sweeney. At least the community keeps the games alive, I still play UT2004.

StoneTitan9h ago

I mean cant really blame them for supporting the game that made them the most money and the most people player...ever?

Psychonaut8521h ago

Call of Duty ruined Call of Duty. They needed no outside assistance.

Ra30301h ago

100% correct! The makers of Call of Duty ran out of ideas long, long ago so they take ideas from other games like Ghost Recon, Fortnite and any other FPS game hat had success hell CoD remasters maps that they've remastered several times already then charge you again for it. Call of Duty is simply a cut, copy and paste and then put the $70 price on it every year. Activision and now Microsoft has been essentially remastering Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare every year since it was released in 2007 its to the point it's worse than the sports game like the Madden, NBA and others yearly sports franchises.
@Psychonaut85 is spot on "Call of Duty ruined Call of Duty. They needed no outside assistance"!

Spend more $$ and you'll end up In easier lobbies so you win both ways when ya spend that cash

melons8d ago

Controversy in the COD community feels like it happens within an alternate timeline. Activision will take the piss with something, there will be a momentary fuss about it, and then they will forget about it and carry on anyway. Repeat this cycle literally every year for the rest of time.

Gridknac8d ago

They call that a crack head! Thats what this is really about, its an addiction. People who dont smoke cigarettes look and laugh at the addicts that spend $8-$10 a pack, but they cant help themselves, they are addicted. That same analogy applies perfectly to the whole MT industry. Only an addict that was not thinking clearly would spend this kind of money on something so frivolous. A round of multiplayer provides the same high a person gets from scratching a lotto ticket, or putting money on a sports bet. MT in general need to really be regulated because you have a generation of kids becoming adults who grew up only knowing the MT era of gaming. Its normal to them and they will in turn teach their kids the same by just being a gaming parent and getting their kids involved with them in gaming. Thats why no matter how ridiculous the headlines keep getting out of the MT industry, it never seems to fade or go away.

X-236d ago

I'm so tired of hearing about what they're doing with this game, its never going to change and it's never going to value the consumer over money, furthermore the people who engage so heavily in the microtransactions I guess allegedly are having a blast and can't wait to do it some more this year when the new version of the game drops.
