I guess Japan didn't like Gravity Rush. It's a great game that i thought would be welcomed by Japanese gamers. It seems right up their alley.

Anyway,

- 8 out of the top 10 games are for Nintendo systems
- 6 out of the top 10 games are for the Nintendo 3DS
- The first WiiU entry is at #18
- The first PSV entry is at #42

What's the conclusion? We should be worried. Vita is being sold at a loss and is sucking the life out of Sony Corp. THQ was dissolved a few days back, will Sony suffer the same fate?

What's the conclusion? You should get health insurance for diving head first into one.

Check the facts:
- Yes Nintendo does dominate the top 10, but where's the surprise, these titles always sell high, but what about the rest of the world?

- I'd say the WiiU entry at number 18 is pretty poor, considering it's Mario Bros, I mean a PSV title to be only ~100k behind as a PS2 port is quite impressive.

- PS Vita is not sold at a loss.

- Why would Sony 'dissolve' like THQ, when their share price has spiked $5 since November last year? Let alone due to one portable console that accounts for less than 2% of Sony's operating expenses.

@plmkoh

PS vita is not sold at loss?
do you have any proof?

The VP of SCEA refers to that in a video interview.

Should we also say that the Xbox 360 is doomed since there isn't a single title on that list? No we shouldn't. Xbox360 might be "doomed" in Japan, but worldwide, it is doing really well.

EddieNX 4104d ago

@plmkoh - the Wiiu game at 18 is impressive/expected. The wiiu launched on the 8th of december in Japan , giving it just over half a month on a brand new system to sell.

Impressive - the Vita game being so low however is not.

Do note that is only the manufacturing costs, but it gives us an idea.

Even in the 30's range that's impressive for Japan.

"Keep in mind that games bought directly on digital platforms are not included, nor are download cards purchased at retail."

When will we get the results for Digital Downloads.
I wonder if this is skewing some of the WiiU US software numbers?

Most commenters seem to be missing the big problem with the 3DS. Its sold gazillions, yet most 3DS games in the list have only sold 200-300K.

That leaves developers with no massive advantage in coding for 3DS over the Vita, if they have a decent brand behind the game. There's less competition on the Vita side, so we may see more games cross-developed this year, and if the 15 PSP games in the list update to a Vita version (some have already), they get extra sales for only a bit more effort.

Not cast-iron in any sense, but I would have thought most popular 3DS games would be in the million plus range.

SpoonyRedMage4103d ago

The number of million selling franchises in Japan can likely be counted on fingers and the majority of them are Nintendo franchises.

Even so a game like Bravely Default, a new IP with small promotion on the 3DS, was able to outsell every Vita game(including big brands like Hatsune Miku and Persona). Bravely Default is also barely in the 3DS's top 20 whereas Vita's no 3 is only at a third of its numbers and not even in the top 100.

If you have a very niche game it might not make much difference whether you release on Vita or 3DS but for a mid range release(over 100K) it's much easier to attain those results on 3DS.

Also unless Sony is incentivising it(which they likely are for God Eater)developers can also port their titles to the 3DS and sales could be much higher. If you look at the Little Battler's franchise on the list the 3DS port of the original release has outsold the PSP sequel and the PSV version of the sequel didn't even make the Top 100 for the year despite launching simultaneously with the PSP version.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron - Coming Back for a New Generation

Originally launched in 2011, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is coming to Nintendo Switch, so It's time to look back at the original.

Still have my ps3 copies. Bought it at launch and another one when I found it cheap and in perfect condition about 10 years ago. I wouldn’t buy it on Switch but if they made a PS5 version I would. I still have one of my PS3 Fats hooked up so good to go either way.

darthv728h ago

Id play it again on the switch. I wished my 360 version was bc but this is still a good way to play.

Fallout 3's Reveal Led To Death Threats And Bethesda's First Security Guard

The artist behind Fallout 4’s Deathclaw reveals just how bad things got back when Bethesda took over the series

anast10h ago

People are stupid I get it. No one should feel unsafe,

But I think they need to talk about why they cut so many corners during the development process and why none of their games ever look current. And why they think all of this is okay while they charge full price.

LucasRuinedChildhood10h ago

As much as Bethesda deserve criticism, that's not really relevant to the reveal of Fallout 3 in 2007.

VenomUK7h ago

The default angle Kotaku always go for is to highlight the worst in gaming.

I would’ve focused on the creative.

there is no "but". the hell lol
