Zelda Wii U: Non-Linearity is More Than Just Dungeon Order, Has to be the Heart and Soul of the Game

GenGAME writes: "When Eiji Aonuma announced two of the central features that the Zelda team is preparing for Zelda Wii U, I was absolutely floored to hear that non-linear game progression made the cut. But the feeling of open-ended adventure with unlimited player possibilities isn’t just about dungeon order: it’s part of the heart and soul of The Legend of Zelda."

The overworld (read: the non-linear aspect) has been a part of Zelda since the start, but it has slowly been removed from the game in favor of a focus on dungeons. I would like the overworld to feel dangerous and interesting like it used to be, not just a big, open field that I am forced to go through to get from Village A to Dungeon B.

I'd love a Zelda RPG. It would work so well, because I'd like Link to be more personal. But I would never tamper with Ninnty's choices.

The idea of co-op is scary. I could except playing as Tingle and help out. Mario Galaxy had a 2nd player feature, but going online? Unless it's Four Swords, then no please.

Why are people begging for a Zelda game that isn't Zelda?

Its like asking for a Call of Duty without guns, a Sim Combat racer or an Elder Scrolls cooking sim.

The formula for Zelda is what makes it Zelda. If you change that then you will just have some arbitrary games with the words "Zelda" written on the cover.

If I wanted Fallout, Oblivion or Red Dead Redemption, then I would play one of those games.

Nintendo hasn't released a bad Zelda game yet, so I don't see any reason for them to change the core mechanics and methodologies.

Sometimes it does indeed feel like people demand change for the sake of change as oppose to the betterment of the game. But people seem to ignore that no two Zelda games are one in the same.

Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask have the same engine and graphics style. Would you really be willing to tell me that they're the same game because of that? Because I recall them being VERY different in gameplay and structure.

Agreed , apart from the core essentials of each Zelda game , they always change dramatically. Skyward sword recently combining Super metroid/Metroid primes ''Re-exploration'& #39; with Zelda's core gameplay to make a very fresh Zelda Experience.

People still said ''I want a hyrule field'' which is fair enough , But the change was more than welcome to me. Skydiving off a loftwing into a previously explored area to access ''that place you saw'' with your latest item is very satisfying.

Sometimes I feel Like most people just use Internet guides when gaming and then bash the game afterwards... that's all everyone does lol.

The best way to play games is without any help , you get the most value that way.

I am begging for a sequel to The Legend of Zelda that doesn't do away with everything that made that game popular in the first place.

Benjaminkno4100d ago

I'm a tremendous Zelda fan. I liked Zelda II.

Personally, I'd like to see something completely different.
Skyward Sword perfected the formula, now I want more content innovation.

Whatever Nintendo does, it'll be good.

Great article and summed-up well.

-I think the WW's Stealth set maybe a KEY to this-
For instance, Getting past the Lynels and Armos was just a matter of dodging their insane speed and range attacks. You could kill them but it took a long time and it took constant dodging and awareness of the position of the other enemies on screen- it was better to just dodge through the screen (when you could).

- Some of the things in 3D Zeldas must stand-
It would be near impossible to back to burning and bombing every thing in sight to find secrets. You would need some kind of radar or graphic indication.

-I like the idea of being able to go where you want, when you want- and in such making your own difficulty. - I just hope that this does not rob you of story events- Some games skip cut-scenes when you do something out of order- sometimes you even miss-out on stuff.

i think the overworld in skyward sword was brilliant, it had enemies, traps and puzzles before you even got into the dungeon, I hope Nintendo expands on that idea

Honestly I really changed my mind on Fi with the remaster because they didn't make her interrupt your gameplay every 5 seconds, that drastically changed my views on her

Inverno72d ago

Technically she's in ToTK but obviously can't take any other form than the sword she was made into. Also the companion feature has been done plenty of times in Zelda, I don't think it'll add anything new. If anything should be brought back it should be the Minish.

Directionless Modern Zelda Should Return to its 3D Roots

Matt from We Game Daily writes "The Legend of Zelda series has gone in a different direction. One which, try as I have, I just can’t get on board with. Here is why I think Zelda should return to its 3D roots."

Amen! A good, tight, Zelda game with a focus on dungeons and puzzles. Let people have the new style Zelda if you gotta, but let us have the OoT style games too. That's not without precedent either, the handheld 2D Zelda's in the style of A Link to the Past etc have coexisted alongside the 3D Zelda's before

FinalFantasyFanatic103d ago

As much as I like BoTW, TotK, I need my traditional Zelda games as well, I could not endlessly play the open world Zelda games, plus it's harder to keep those fresher than the traditional games.

Eidolon102d ago (Edited 102d ago )

BotW was just as fresh to the franchise as OoT was. TokT was great but the next LoZ would have to move from that formula to be fresh again. There's only so much they can do with the hardware. I think they focused too much on making the world big instead impactful. I felt the world was sort of empty and repetitive in TotK, sure there was a lot to do but no more difference a Ubisoft game..

anast102d ago

I wouldn't worry too much. Nintendo knows what they are doing.

Ristul102d ago

Wind Waker had a perfect balance of open world and a cool, well hand-crafted design. Maybe try to keep the open world but put in effort to make more memorable story driven quests and locations.

Zelda Fan Brings Godzilla to Life in Tears of the Kingdom

A fan of The Legend of Zelda has recreated the iconic Japanese monster Godzilla in Tears of the Kingdom using the game's Zonai devices.

Knightofelemia140d ago

I like it would also be cool if some created Dragon Caesar in the game I would love to watch the two going at it.
