It's just box art. All box art is supposed to do is sell copies. So I don't really care if they completely flub it up. They wouldn't do it the way they do it if such a template wasn't proven to work.

The first box art sums up the game so well. You have space in the background, some kind of ship structure (ishimura) then you have this hand. It's obviously a futuristic type hand but it's covered with armor or some type of engineering suit. Then there is the blood, so something bad is going down. And finally the arm is dismembered which is a nod to the strategic dismemberment.

The box art on the original is obviously the best of the three (I felt DS2's was extremely lacking) but it's got the same issue that BioShock had. People will look at it on the shelf and be like "A floating hand? WTF, screw that." The box art is obviously trying to appeal to a wider audience and it doesn't really phase me. The box sits on my shelf while I play the game, and if it's that much of an issue I'll make and print off my own custom art.

The thing is, I don't know a single person who just goes to Walmart and buys any random game on a whim. I'm sure even casual consumers do at least a minimum amount of research on a game before they buy it. Nobody is going to be walking down the isle and say, "Hey, look at that awesome game cover! I know, I'll spend $60 to buy it just because that is such a cool cover!"...

I don't know...I've seen people buy games solely based on box covers. Granted, it was usually parents who didn't seem to know much about games or young kids who picked up the boxes because it looks "really cool!!", but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens more often that we think.

The bargain bin in particular seems to cater towards casual gamers who are only interested in buying games that are cheap and look pretty, instead of gamers like us who are willing to dish out a bit more money for a better game experience (regardless of what the cover looks like).

It all can make a cover more eye-catching, it is done in every marketting strategy (especially all the signs inside stores); but this box art just looks very dull. The only thing that makes it pop is the white and that's only because white box arts tend to be bright.

Did you play the demo it does not feel like dead space at all. There is tons of ammo every where, the upgrading system has been completely watered down why was i able to up grade my rigs health to the max within the span of a demo? the only good thing i got away from that demo was being able to construct weapons.

Like many games, the demo allows you to unlock things much faster than you would in the final game. It's to give you a chance to see how everything works.

i know that the demos allow you get things quicker the dead space 2 demo gave you a suit that you dont get till more than half way through the whole game. But never have i been able to upgrade an important to tool in the game to almost max in the demo.

The devs have already stated that much of that demo is different from the main game. The full game doesn't have universal ammo, supplies will be much more scarce, etc. And if it's that big of a deal, play on the harder difficulties and experience the game the way it's meant to be.

Where are your sources to confirm that? Sure SOME demos alter the games levels in order to show off more environments and so you don't automatically know what to do in the final game (F.E.A.R/Condemned demos do this)no doubt they made SOME changes, but you can't deny - in all the footage we've seen, it looks pretty damn watered down and well...generic is the only word I can think of. Ammo DOES seem more accessible too. The whole thing just seems more 'actiony' and just comes off as yet another series that seems to stray from it's original legacy and material.

But regardless, the whole purpose of a demo is to do just that...demonstrate. Give you a teaser and show off what the final product is going to be like. Throwing ammo everywhere to show off the mechanics easier is NOT an excuse. Why must the demo reveal all it's secrets? All this does is make the demo fail at being a demonstration of the final product and only leaves people with a sour taste in their mouth that will more than likely result in them not being as excited for the game as they perhaps would have been if a demo was not released in the first place. And if this demo happens to be accurate...then jeez.

Sometimes poor or uninspired concept art, and even box art, can make it clear where the game is focused towards. It may be easy to misinterpret in some instances, but it is also hard to miss clues that a game is going to be like this or like that. Some people see it's going more towards action than horror just from the box art, and the demo did little to ease that feeling.

LOL "Megan Man" :) But I understand your point. I think the thing is though, consumers are smarter than they were back in the 80's/90's and are more keyed in on how marketing works. With so much exposure and information distributed across the internet, what may have worked back then, won't fly nowadays.

I agree you can't judge a book by it's cover and have nothing against the game itself, but at the same time - THIS is the first thing the average consumer will see on the shelf at his local store. It's important that the first impression be good. And especially given the budget this game has, it's fair to expect some kind of creativity.

I personally think its badass as it should be..The first game had the proper Boxart as did the second and now this one..i mean,there might be other badass options but the boxart of the "hero" walking with a weapon in his hand alone is pretty universal so you don't have to worry too much.. and badass boxarts can have a big impact on sales for some games.

No matter what this game is going to be Awesome and intense like the first 2 were.. Viceral games has not let me down and they are some of the most talented devs out there imo =)

I gotta say that the demo got me excited. I only played up until the first workbench and had to stop since my 7yo woke up and came to me (it's morning here). I'll play the entire thing through this weekend if I have the time but afaik the game seems solid.

I hope they don't put too many Unchartedish narrow escapes from falling caterpillars and such. One is enough. It's too predictable to get excited over when you have been playing videogames for more than 2 decades.

I don't think EA cares box art wise since they along with others are pushing for digital media. Some games either come with no game booklet now, or a two page black and white leaflet that shows the controls and tons of user agreements.

As you might know he is on a snow planet in this game and he's wearing a special winter suit called artic suit if I'm correct and that's the one on the cover. Guess they just did designe it with the cloth to make it look cooler (aha aha) and it does. In the demo you get to put it on and play in int as well.

I should say that I pre-prdered the game and that I'm looking forward to playing the game alone first and in co-op mode on my second or third playthrough.

In the end even the best boxart will still be a boxart and what matters is the game, and I got to say that the demo felt like a proper Dead Space game. I was worried about the whole co-op thing, but that one trailer (I think it was called two ways to play the game or something like that) and the demo made me want the game even more now. The only thing that worries me is the story tbh and I think the engine starts to look dated.

Btt, the funny thing is that we hardcore gamers, and I assume that most people who visit this site are such gamers, care more about the game in the end, we check reviews, read articles about it, watch every trailer, etc. We don't judge a game by it's cover (or do we? *cough* BioShock *cough*, and I hated that two, the Back of the U1 cover LOL) BUT we are the people that will appreciate a good cover, maybe put the boy on a shelf, or just look and it and be like 'that's awesome'. The casual or rather uninformed people might get attracted by such a generic cover, but once they bouht the game, they won't really think and care about it to much. But the publishers know that too and they know that it is more important to get the casual people to buy a game who might just judge it by it's cover, than the hordcore people who do pretty much know all they need to know about the game before or when it just came out.

However, there are many fanstastic examples that show that you can please everyone, but maybe some people are just to lazy to think of a better way to do it and just stick to the formula, to what sells good atm, and that's hero XY standing there with a gun. What surprises me though is that Dead Space used to have these fantstic covers that everyone liked and I don't know what happened with EA this time.
