Do you know what DLC is?

After reading a recent interview from Destructoid it seems that there are still a large proportion of gamers out there completely unaware of downloadable content and life in games beyond their inaugural retail state.

Why is this the case and how can we do a better job of imparting this knowledge ?

Lol

From the way some companies handle it you'd think it means "Disc Locked Content".

DLC is "Downloadable Content" so yes, I do know what DLC is!

Yes. DLC is the new profit for companies these days. They charge for media that could have easily been released when the game comes out. But instead they release $50 worth of DLC on top of a $64.19 game.

"Do you know what DLC is?"

Capcom's main source of income, it's gotta be by now right?

They should change the name and logo to, "DLCapcom"

DLC can be good or bad depending on how its used. If it unlocks content on the disc you've already purchased than it seems like the dev is just trying to gouge you for more money, if you get a day one patch it looks like a rushed development process and they sold you an unfinshed product, games like COD make it feel like your basically buying a 120 dollar game for 60 bucks and getting charged for the rest later.

However there are lots of cases where it just seems to be extra content for you to enjoy in your favorite games. Assassin's creed games seem to have a great game with or without the DLC, its in these cases I see it as good thing. RDR expansions were a lot of fun and could have been a standalone game in itself.

Thats the unfortunate byproduct of the digital revolution, if a company decides to be greedy and pull a dirty trick it leaves a nasty taste in gamers mouths while some dirty developer laughs all the way to the bank.

Honestly the industry has pretty much tarnished any good idea there is. We see DLC and go "awesome we get more to our favorite games!" Then they go "Awesome we can lock out content and pretend its a bonus!"

Seriously, the idea of getting MORE is great. Some games like Mass Effect or Saints Row 3 do it properly, but hardly any of them actually add anything worthwhile. A few maps, some skins, bleh!

Look at Sims 3. That hits consoles and I'd assume we'd get the expansion packs right? Nope.

They rather add a few missions then sell you a 60 dollar game instead of a 30-40 dollar expansion pack.
