Review: Years of creative vision have chiseled The Cave crystal-fine | GameZone

The Cave was an idea that creator Ron Gilbert incubated for 25 years. It dates back to his days at LucasArt (then Lucasfilm Games), where he made Maniac Mansion and other adventure games, like The Secret of Monkey Island. So what can one man learn about the genre in over two decades?

All that knowledge and experience is summed up in The Cave ...

I bought this for the Wii U last night and have to disagree with the score above. The game is OK but I wouldn't give it 8.5/10 (more like 6/10)

While the game looks quite good, the voice acting funny and the sprawling caves varied - the game lacks polish.

Some people are complaining of total lock-ups which I haven't experienced. But I have experienced the occasional frame-rate drop or jerky scrolling. The controls are also odd, allowing 2/3 player co-op but at any time you can take over a character being "occupied" by another player - last night I threatened to beat a friend half to death with the Pro Controller because he kept accidentally using the D-pad and "stealing" my character. I realise the game is supposed to be co-op, but selecting characters and changing camera focus actually gets in the way of the game... Eventually we just switched to single player while the other player rolled blunts (which may have added to the confusion but it's how we play most games).

Another annoyance is the inability to play the game off-TV. The Gamepad touch-screen is ONLY used for character selection - combine that with the frame-rate issues and I can only assume this is another rushed Wii U port.

Don't get me wrong, the game isn't terrible, just flawed. Especially when there's a MUCH better puzzle platformer available for the Wii U: Although the gameplay isn't entirely the same, the concepts are close enough to put this game firmly in Trine 2's shadow.

It may be that the Wii U version is, as you're calling it, "another rushed Wii U port," as most of your complaints deal with technical performance. This is a review for the PlayStation 3 version.

Ah, the article doesn't indicate which version was reviewed but the technical problems exist in at least two console versions. There's specific mention of the 360 problems in this review: http://www.411mania.com/gam...

About my comment about it being another rushed port - lack of off-TV play when the game doesn't utilise the Gamepad is sloppy. Several developers have commented on how quick and easy it is to implement off-TV play so there's no excuse other than kicking the game out of the door for it not to be in there. "Rushed" is the wrong word though, it has the same technical issues as other versions... So I'll change it to a "Sloppy" or maybe "Hasty" port :)

@Nevers0ft: The review indicates the version that was reviewed two times: in the second paragraph and at the bottom. ;)

It does sound like there are much worse technical issues in the Xbox 360 and Wii U versions, which is unfortunate! That review you linked to does say that the those problems are the biggest detriment to the game, so I think that can account for some of the differences in score.

Ooops sorry, totally missed that. I read the article and that titbit didn't sink in then when I went to check before I posted I checked the info panel but still missed it in the article.

I half expect a patch to fix many of the issues and hopefully add off-TV play. The issues aren't a game-breaker, I went back to it again last night for another blast... But as far as co-op platform puzzlers (is that even a genre or am I making crap up? :)) the game is overshadowed by Trine 2 - which is stunning and infinitely playable.

Also, that review you linked to does make a good point about repetition. Eliminating one character would have solved a good deal of that problem.

Sega sells Relic and will cut 240 jobs across UK studios

GamesIndustry.biz writes: "Relic is best known for the Company of Heroes and Dawn of War games, and recently developed the new Age of Empires for Microsoft. Relic will transition to an independent studio and will no-longer be part of the Sega group of studios.

The majority of the 240 job cuts are across Creative Assembly and Sega Europe, while there will be a ‘small number’ cut from Sega HARDLight. There was no mention of other Sega UK studios, including Two Point Studios and Sports Interactive."

Shame about Creative Assembly, they should have just been allowed to do an Alien Isolation sequel.

It was that garbage coh 3 that did them in only a special team can make a sequel worse in every way even though it was a 10 year gap and the same era.

I hope they find new jobs in the industry soon.

Two Point Studios and Sports Interactive probably run on a shoe string budget so that fits into SEGA better lol

Sega had such a turbulent existence from the mid-90s to when they dropped out of console manufacturing entirely in 2001, it’s understandable if you’ve never heard of the Genesis Nomad.
