Nintendo Direct: Sony and Microsoft Are You Watching?

After today's Nintendo Direct, a look is taken at what lessons Microsoft and Sony can take from Nintendo.

Sony and Microsoft don't compete with Nintendo. Even Sony has said they feel Nintendo runs it own generation by itself. A person that is only able to buy one console at the beginning of a generation who owned a PS3 or 360 will not skip out on the successors for a wii u. Sony and Microsoft know it that's why they have dragged this generation the most with their current console.

The impression I got with that is there is a big Nintendo fanbase that also buys Sony or Microsoft products. This fanbase do no fully care on what the system is as long as they can play Mario , Zelda.... The thing is a Nintendo consoles do not compete at the same level as Sony and Microsoft as they have become a console you (big Nintendo fanbase) will get regards (fantastic position to be in by the way). Unlike Sony and Microsoft where you tend to get either or.

It isn't a bad thing and more often than not it is the most ideal solution for a console manufacturer. They have there games that sell the system regardless of third party help. Sony and Microsoft on the other hand need that support and often their exclusives with third part support are the deciding factor between a PS3 and 360.

I would agree with that. Nintendo are happy being behind and sticking with there fanbase. However that was because in the past with the wii it sold to a new demographic. One they didn't really care about. However it may not work with WiiU.

I agree but they can do both. They can continue to support the ps3 ti battle the wiiU and ps4 to battle xboxnext. And i would consider today more of catching up for nintendo. They opted to get a jump on next gen consoles by creating this gen hardware. Also, most of their big titles didnt release at launch and who knows when they will. He says Sony is complacent. What? They have many exclusives including games that are similar to the bigN. And they are pioneering the HD remake. Also as he mentioned, they are both a little busy right now with real next gen consoles. Nintendo may survive with their trademark games that everyone loves while Sony and Microsoft battle it out, but i think Sony has the opportunity to steal from both companies. Anyway, Nintendo's launch was lackluster and they dont have much time before they lose the spotlight entirely.

Very well said. Nintendo needs to get momentum going for their console ASAP if they don't want it to get blown away by new hardware releases and the rumored launch line up the PS4 is said to have. I also don't doubt that Microsoft will price the next box competitively in order to try and shrink Sony's and Nintendo's market share.

Except it isn't "current generation" hardware by console standards. The Wii U uses a gpu similar to those released in 2011. The next sony and microsoft platforms will be using gpus from 2012. All are considered "next gen" by console standards.

This is how you build good hype, I like the direction that Nintendo has taken when reveling games! No longer do we have to wait till E3, though I'm sure there will be many announcements there, Nintendo has found a way to keep their fans excited before then. I'm ESPECIALLY EXCITED for Monolith Soft X, and am no longer worried for the system as of now. Things could change, but for now am super EXCITED!

oddly theres new games announced for PS every single week.. Not just at E3 or Destination PS, or anything else.. Theres always new news of new games being announced.. Keep an eye on the news sections & not opinion pieces.. Nothing wrong with being excited about a new game brother... I was excited when i seen the last of us get announced & shown.. Not at E3 but before it on a regular day remember? I was excited for Ni No Kuni not at E3 but a regular day.. Same as Tales of Xillia, GOW Ascension, etc.. None were revealed at E3 except Beyond 2 souls & wonderbook..

Well since PS gets new games announced every week you guys can stop plastering the same 4 games coming in every thread! TLOU, Beyond, GoW, and Ni NoKuni. I've stated before that I have no clue why Sony fanboys proclaim these games in every post they make. But sales of Sony's 1st party exclusives vs 3rd party buggy games aren't even close in sales comparison. A game like Uncharted should sell like Halo does on the 360 if you guys really put your money where your mouth is...

the only thing I liked was the X announcement but people are blowing this out of proportion really. Nintendo is still missing on tons and tons of 3rd party multiplats this year and Sony has its own set of Triple A exclusives for 2013 on top of the rumored announcement of the PS4.

HD ports like Wind Waker and announcements for games that will not even come out this year is nothing to get SO excited about if you ask me.

Aside from Other M, which was a little different and a departure from the regular the Prime Trilogy was utterly fantastic, and was an amazing purchase on the Wii because they added Wii controls to the first 2 games.

If anything, the Wii U game should hopefully build on the successful Prime series..

The Xenoblade 2 announcement looks better than anything on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 imo. And it assures me the Wii U can visually do things the Xbox 360 and PS3 cant.

I understand why people are skeptical on Wii U, but the PS3 and Xbox 360 are shooterboxes. COD, Mass Effect, Far Cry, Killzone, Resistence, Borderlands, Medal Of Honor, Resistance, MAG, Halo, Uncharted, Dead Space,..... Everything is a shooter.

DmC Devil May Cry, Anarchy Reigns, and God of war are out or coming but the number of shooters dwarf those genre's. Lets not get started on console RPGs wheres Final Fantasy versus? Instead we get this Final Fantasy 13 Lighting Returns crap. The Last good JRPG on a console was Lost Odyssey. Ni No Kuni and Tales of Xillia took forever to come out here in the states.

I for one am happy Nintendo is bringing different types of games, even if there sequels. At least their not shooters. Legend of Zelda Windwaker HD, Fire Emblem x Shin Megami, Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, Monster Hunter 3, Xenoblade 2.

But the timing was great because people were originally complaining that releasing Black 2 and White 2 on the DS was a cop out only to follow it up with X and Y on the 3DS. Nintendo does hype and timing of announcements very well. When I heard of X and Y part of me was like so soon but then I felt that the timing was actually perfect with a release far enough away to allow gamers to enjoy what they have. That is just my thoughts on it all.

How is this news? Aside from Monolith's game, and zelda WW HD everything else was standard. Them saying they are working on a future zelda, ssb, and mario kart is NOT news or anything to get excited about. People knew this before the Wii U's release. Retarded fanboys are acting like this is the best day in gaming history.. Announcements people, just announcements of games that will EVENTUALLY come, maybe 2014, maybe 2015.

The timing and how the new was delivered is special. PS Vita could use some game announcements and a kick from the Nintendo Direct kind of announcement method. It builds excitement and makes people want to jump on board with the console and brand.

I can just go on the internet when a developer or company has to say anything about his or her game and still be hyped.What is the difference if I hear about a game before or during E3 or all the other trade shows. If they had shown footage of all these games, it would have been a different story. Instead what we got was:

"Hey guys, those games you already knew we were gonna make? Well guess what? We're gonna make em'. It's official."

We already knew they were making a 3D Mario, a new Zelda, a new Mario Kart, and a new Super Smash. But we didn't get any footage.

All I got out of this is that they're doing an HD version of Wind Waker and an Epic Yarn version of a Yoshi game.

Where you fail at in your attempt to belittle what is otherwise seen as good news. Is the fact that Nintendo has stated that these games will not only be shown but in playable form at e3. Which means these games are futher along in the development process than they are letting on. Why would Nintendo show such big titles before e3, they know that those games will draw in the big crowds. Even the Monolith game showed game play mechanics, which means that this game is also further along in the process as well.

This is one of my main reasons why i dont believe that the PS3 is doomed with the announcement of the new games at the Nintendo direct event. But this is just my opinion.

Anyways i believe that Nintendo did a pretty good job with the event however they failed to mention the release dates for many of the games and some of the games announced didnt even have gameplay shown for it. They should have told people that the games are coming later on in the year and they should have shown some footage of major titles like Bayonetta 2 for example.

That's all that's announced, there's still more coming I'm sure considering half of that list I made is coming out by May.

So in terms of exclusives there are lots of games only on PS3. Unlike Nintendo's announcements, these games are ACTUALLY coming out this calender year. By the time those Nintendo games come out there will be new games coming out like new games by Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Santa Monica, Quantic dreams etc.

And none of those I listed were multiplatform games so you know dig deeper before you laugh.

The point is not what or how many games you have, but how you announce and present them. The Nintendo direct didn't have a lot in terms of QUANTITY, but it was very well communicated, and directly, which is what Sony and Microsoft should learn from.

There are plenty of quality games for PS3, Ni No Kuni, Tales of Xillia, God of War Ascension, The Last of Us, Puppeteer, Rain, Beyond two Souls are all looking quite promising. Well The reason why that list has many multiplatform titles is because, for PS3, everything past E3 to the holiday 2013 is a complete and total mystery. Of course they have big plans for exclusives in that period, we just dont know what they are yet.

This is where Nintendo differs from Sony. Why would they show off the new 3d Mario, new Mario Kart and Smash Bros game just to show the same stuff at e3? what they gave today was just an insight on just some of the games that are coming for WiiU. People are trying to make this negative news and I dont see how it could be! Even the info on the next Zelda is something that Nintendo never does. They basically gave some clues as to what we can expect with the ideas they are playing around with. A non linear, with possible multiplayer components in a Zelda game, I for one want to see how they plan on pulling something like this off. But with what I've just mentioned, gamers cant say that Nintendo plays it safe with their franchises and they are all the same games. This is the most different take on a Zelda game since it came into existence if they pull it off...
