As the DualShock has been the consistent PlayStation icon for many fans, the question that seems to be raised is ‘what will happen to it with each new generation?’ As rumors have once again sparked about a different DualShock 4, the Daily Reaction crew of Seb and Dan address the potential for changing the DS for the PS4.
In this article Jon Ireson of RealGamerNewz takes up the discussion of DualShock 3 support for the PlayStation 4 and goes over the many technical as well as logical reasons why it is not necessary and if anything, would only hold innovation back for the gamer.
I agree! I welcome a new controller. The dualshock has been around since Playstation 1. I think it is time for Sony to try something new.
It makes sense seeing how different the new controller is and the extra features so I don't mind that the DS3 won't work. The only thing that gets me is what is that light bar for. Is it just 6axis? And if so why could they just but it in the controller like the DS3?
From Shuhei Yoshida on the PSBlog:
"On the front side of DUALSHOCK 4 is a light bar with LED that illuminate in various colors to match the color of the character in a game as a simple way to identify players. The colors can also provide useful information to players, such as when their character has taken damage during a game. DUALSHOCK 4 was developed alongside a second peripheral, a dual camera which can sense the depth of the environment in front of it and also track the 3D location of the controller via its light bar. The new camera incorporates four microphones capable of accurate sound detection and source origination, and it will support the PlayStation Move motion controller with more precision than ever before."
I don't understand why people would complain. It's basically a DS3 but upgraded and better. It hasn't changed that much so fans won't recognize the controller. The buttons are all there, the analogue sticks are there in the same place. They've just refined it and made it better:
-Reduced latency
-Better rumble
-Speaker integrated
-Lightbar LED (enables Move support of some sort)
-Touchpad for (additional input)
-Headphone jack
-Better triggers for shooters
-More ergonomic
-More texture on the device for better grip
-Share and options button
All that, while still keeping the traditional DS3 design which is familiar to millions of gamers. The only thing they removed was start and select buttons, which honestly were a bit unnecessary to begin with. I haven't pressed Start and Select to get out of a Tekken game in ages, nor have i pressed Select to trigger a taunt since Devil May Cry. These can all be integrated with touchpad.
Oh the smell of butthurt fan in the morning lol... It was announced like TWO months ago that the DS3 wasn't gunna work on the PS4, I don't know why everyone seems so surprised now...
for a while I was interested in the PS system because you could use it to play older games... but I agree now that newer systems will have updated/ altered functions so backwards compatability is not always going to be viable...if the new controller is going to have more options on it then using an older one does not make sense to me... as the article stated if you buy the newer system it does not mean you have to discard the older one if I had access to a working PS1 I would still use it today even if I had the newer systems too.
It would be useless for DS3 support since PS4 was built with the new controller features in mind
Allowing DS3 would save a lot of people a lot of money. Money is tight for many and a lot of gamers have DS3 controllers already. Letting them use them for PS4 would only be fair.
That would also cut into the profit Sony could have made from users buying brand new DS4 controllers
You would end up with developers not giving you the DualShock 4 innovation they could because you all ended up using old controllers so they don't care to give you the higher experience if you don't care to take innovation serious.
Look up the changes from DualShock 2 to DualShock 3 it was more than just becoming wireless. There was an increase in how many angles it can detect you controlling from. Who's to say what crucial upgrades the DualShock 4 contains that all PlayStation 4 games will be programmed for?
If you would have used a DualShock 1 in the PlayStation 2 then you wouldn't even be able to control a character correctly in a simple game of basketball because you'd be stuck to only about 9 directions you can aim the character to walk in.
While I agree, given that the only real difference between the two controllers is the touch pad, not really seeing why it can't.
I am looking forward to PS4 and want to see what the new controller can do. I always like to try new technology and not hold back restricted to old ways of doing things.. :)
Play ps3 if you want to use dual shock 3 you bunch of babies! Why would you want to when the dual shock 4 is gonna be better.
It totally makes sense to just make a brand new controller for a brand new system. You want it to grab ppls attention not say eh looks the same !
At least make a peripheral to make it work with old controllers.
With only five days left until the (almost certain) announcement of the Playstation 4, this photo appeared and made the rounds of Destructoid, Kotaku and everywhere else.
Business at the front. Party at the back? A list of observations and questions regarding this prototype. From the front here it looks quite “normal” but the more you think about it the stranger it gets - could there be some unique features we're missing?
Smh back at you? Agreed, it's likely not the final design, and for the record I like the look of the weird prototype anyway. :) It definitely has a few visible improvements already in this form.
PlayStation will bring an end to a sixteen-year tradition of DualShock controllers with the release of the PlayStation 4, CVG has learned.
As have I, but a change would be welcome; as long as it's not a complete 360 controller rip off.
I really doubt it will be a 360 design. I see it being very similar to the Dualshock design but like the article mentions but different methods that the the immersion patent has for rumble. I don't see it differing that much.
uh....isnt the 360 controller already a dualshock "rip off" but simply more bulky and with the left joystick swaped with the dpad?
i wouldn't mind too on the condition that they give me the option to use my ps3 controller on the ps4. i think sony should have sold the infamous banana controller on its own as an option to judge people's reactions.
I hope they'll keep current face buttons also inclusion of Vita's d-pad would be sweet.
Euroamer also claims to have similar news

DualShock = ALMOST PERFECT
Needs Real Triggers + X360 Analogs and DS would be that Best Josytick EVER!
O-T
Calling it:
Dual-Move Controller = Split/able(?)-Dualshock Design for motion-waggle-waggle and normal using like it should have been :P
If they fix the analog sticky issue it would be awesome. I've been force to buy more than one controllers over the years because of this, especially if you Play Fifa or FPS games
I think the Xbox 360 controller is perfect for everything except fighting games. The d-pad is the only thing keeping it from being the perfect controller. That's not to say I don't like PlayStation's controllers though. I've just never liked them for first person shooters. It feels unnatural to me (like I'm gouging someone's eyes out with my thumbs). I've always wanted to see a modular controller, where you can easily place analogs/d-pads/buttons where you want.
At any rate, I'm anxious to see what Microsoft and Sony come up with next.
I don't want to sound coming from a cave, but what do biometric sensors mean ? What are their features and advantages ? Do they mean they can detect our heat, sweat and face changements ? I thought. Sony would use the haptic feedback , more advanced than this : http://www.gamespot.com/ang...
Sony claimzd that you can feel a cat's fur with the upcoming controller: http://www.mcvuk.com/news/r...
http://m.neogaf.com/showthr...
What happened to those ? Anyway, I am happy that they will change this dinosaur design.
Here's the most interesting part of the article.
"The new console - code-named Orbis - will be revealed in a matter of weeks, not months."
I always prefered the r1, l1 combo for fps, I'm finding it more direct and responsive. On the other hand, I prefer the triggers like Rt,LT for driving games, you can feel the accelerator (I got a G25, but for controller layout purposes).
Each gamepad got it's own advantage. The wiimote is actually not that bad for platformer games(2D).
Let's see what sony have in store for us!
The dualshock controller is the industry standard. Any changes should be centered around the dualshock design, it didn't win an EMMY for nothing. Triggers could be worked on for sure though.
People can have their own opinion about the 360 vs DS3 controllers, but in my opinion (having owned both consoles)
The 360 contoller is wonky (a design which only purpose it seems, was to make it different than the DS)
It's too heavy. It's too big (even for a 6ft 2" guitar player's hands).
The battery pack is in the way.
Some of the buttons (the bumpers) feel like they should be on a CD player rather than a controller.
The lack of pressure sensitivity, the terrible D-pad.
And the concave anologue sticks which only provide proper traction around the edges at their highest point, and the extra wide deadzone that detracts from sensitive, smooth movements and kind of turns everything into a flick.
When people say the 360 controller is better, no matter how hard I try to bare in mind that other people can have their own opinions too, I can't help but think of this list ^^ of problems that I find with it, and think to myself... fucking fanboy!
Maybe I'm the fanboy really?
But, a Playstation without a dualshock, for me, won't feel right at all.
I know nintendo first innovated introducing analog, rumble, and triggers first, but then sony took those ideas and nearly perfected them. Now with it's new controller, these will be further refined and added to with their recognisable sony style and innovation they're known for industry wide.
I hope they make it smooth like the 360 pad. The ridges around the face buttons and dpad (not used so much) really starts to hard your hands after prolonged use.
People were so pissed about the redesign for ps3, before even giving it a second glance....I doubt they will even bother with a redesign unless they do anything radically different.
I see no reason why Sony should abandon the current DS3 desing (it could be improved with better triggers tough) while still providing new controller for those looking for something new.
Or better (easier yet) make the console backwards compatible with Ds3.
All i want:
1:is slightly bigger.
2:better R2&L2 pretty much copy the 360 versions or at least make em like the pelican extensions but built in. And program all shooting games (including uncharted) to the r2&l2 not the blasted 1 buttons. Or at least make a flip button where the 1&2s flip flop.
3:better analogs....dish shaped not rounded.
i wouldnt mind a staggered anolog set up neither but isn't necessary.
Keep it light, better battery life, bigger home button and a headset like the 360 that hooks into the control,....not a usb port!
If youre going to copy the 360 controller, COPY THE 360 CONTROLLER!! Ballz to the wall baby. If not just make the TWEEKS i discussed.
I gotta admit button mashers like god of war and dantes inferno do feel pretty damn good on ps and not as good on 360. So let the dualshock 3 be ps4 compatible. And make all future ps3,4,5,6...shooters with r2&l2 shhot and aim flippability!
Finally, I couldn't believe they were sticking with it for so long. I would have even been willing to try the boomerang controllers over the awful dualshock.
@LAZ U agreed with everything except with connecting the headset with the controller.I feel free when playing my ps3 as oppose to my 360.
@DOMination-
That's exactly what I think, the genral shape of a Dual-Shock for me is better than 360's controller, but the thing is it have a lot of edges where the 360 is smooth, so it feels much better in hand even through it's gigantic and have the battery on the way behind.
So in my opinion the only improvement it really needs is smoothing those edges and better analog sticks... I'm on my 5th controller in 6 years just because the analog stick will not move back to centre correctly after sometime (I believe it simply wear out pretty fast), everything else works, but if my character is going to walk by himself when I want him to stay put, that's one worthless controller for me and I have to buy another.
Aside from that I'm ok if they go on and change some stuff or add new features, as long as they don't go with the dumb assymetric sticks I'm ok. Don't get me wrong, the idea behind assymetric sticks is good, but it came in the wrong time.
Following the first polygonal games and the introduction of analog stick most games had controls that wouldn't fully explore those features... We're using a stick to control the character, the camera would either follow the character's direction or be fixed and the other thumb would be pressing face buttons for main function, basically using the stick just like a d-pad in a game limited to clasic 2D environment. Also your hands were indeed in assymetric position on a Dual Shock since the stick is lower than face buttons.
Midway through last gen almost all games started receinving some shooter mechanics, that is, you control you character with a stick and "aim" (control the camera) with the other, allowing us to better explore the tridimensional worlds. So now basically your thumbs would be on the sticks almost all the time as you walk and look around, also starting the trend to assign main functions to shoulder buttons (or, more recently, triggers) as those were the only finger free to do something else...
So basically we're already in symetry on a Dual-Shock, specially if you are playing anything with shooters mechanics (ironically the very reason people praise assymetry) as it would just create the tension in hands (one side has better grip than the other). Sure there are games out there that could benefitt from it (even more ironically the only thing that comes to my mind is God of War, which still use a fixed camera and you spend a lot of time mashing combos on face buttons) but they are few and will be even more on the next gen as we grew used to be able to explore the map.
The important thing to note is the addition of biometric sensors, and an touchscreen. Not sure if i want a front touchscreen, but i wouldn't mind a back one.
nukeitall
your comments are always lame .. and you do know Eyetoy 3.0 in on the market ..but with new name "kinect"
Naw wait for the eye toy 4 which can peer into your soul and tell you if you are gay or not.......
TBH I can't stand the dual shock design. The Analogs are too close together and not as responsive as other controllers on the market.
The should buttons are awkward and it's a really dated design for a controller.
A new design could boost new interest in people who may not have considered it otherwise. like me.
A new controller is what I've always wanted for PS.
@3-4-5
"The Analogs are too close together and not as responsive as other controllers on the market."
The analogs seem perfectly placed and responsive to me <_< Wouldn't have been given an Emmy Award for "Peripheral Development and Technological Impact of Video Game Controllers" if it were un-responsive.
"The should buttons are awkward and it's a really dated design for a controller."
What are "should" buttons and why are they so, uhm,, awkward? o_o
"A new design could boost new interest in people who may not have considered it otherwise. like me."
Those "should" buttons must be horrible if they're keeping people away (,_, )
blondie it's obvious I meant shoulder buttons. I messed up. it happens.
Anyways, I've just never thought any PS controller was comfortable to hold.
I like certain games for the various PS systems, but I just don't like the controller. You shouldn't get mad about it.
About fucking time. The Dual Shock controller needs a switch up. I hate it, especially for games like CoD. I go to my friends house and play on his PS3 and it just doesnt feel good like the 360 controller always has for me. Some people say if you have bigger hands itès possible that is maybe why a person hates the DS3.
I just hate the in-line stick design...
EDIT, to reply to RAZMOSSIS, I honestly have never felt any of the negatives that you claim. I am also a guitar player and I don;t have small hands...The DS3 feels like a piece of junk in my hands and is too small. The Xbox 360 controller has probably been hailed this gen as a revolution in design to the fact that so many people like it. The DS3 is nice in that you can charge them from your console, but the upside for me in the 360 controller is the battery pack itself. It provides a pefect place for my hands when I am holding it. Also, for FPS games it is far superior in my opinion to the DS3 which lacks the most basic thing called actual triggers lol...The thumbsticks also feel way better on the 360 and I dont slip off them like the DS3. For racing games especially the triggers are nice because the triggers give you VERY accurate sensitivity in that when playing Forza you can use slight brake inputs if needed without having to jam the brakes as what would happen using the DS3.
Personally, Sony needs to sack up a bit and actually try to improve. I find it incredibly lazy on their part that the DS3 is essentially almost identical to the original controller some decade plus years ago.
Also worth noting I enjoy the PS3 so I am not just some fanboy saying stuff cus I hate Sony or something.
Its only because you adjusted to the 360 controller. i feel the same way when it comes to the 360 controller because im use to the ps3 controller.
To me the 360 controller feels alien to me. It's hard for me to press all the way forward and the d pad is quite crummy. Plus 10 years of Nintendo gaming pretty much has my thumbs in auto pilot when it comes to button commands.
Agreed. I grew up on the Dualshock with PS and PS2, but the year I spent on the 360 before the PS3 completely changed my outlook on controllers. The Dualshock was a fine controller when it was released, as was the SNES controller. Today, it is simply outdated.
I will be looking forward to a more ergonomical, 360-like controller, similar to the WiiU.
Not everything you read on the interwebs is true so i highly doubt it. Just wait for Sony to announce the PS4 there's no need for people to get upset or grab pitchforks
Sent from my PS Vita
Yeah, Thank god he explained that... Mildred really knows how to explain stuff.
I'm okay with this. I love the dual shock, but a redesign is of course welcome. Keep it simple though sony. Dont try and make it some super fancy thing.
360 controller undeniably the best controller on the market. dualshock does get uncomfy after long sessions.
But is is deniable, look at several posts here where people prefer the duelshock to the 360 controller. Horses for courses dude.
I love the dual shock
In my opinion is the best controller out there
Is well balanced and doesn't feel awkward in your hands
pretty i am guessing next gen it will be standard for all controllers to have a touch screen
Now I know why I've been getting controllers dirt cheap/free through my job.
God dammit.
so they are gonna finally upgrade from the super Nintendo design after almost 20 years....
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
wait ...as long as they have something close to it so i can play fighting games and H/S games etc
i'm fine with that
Maybe we will see the boomerang design that was shown alongside the PS3 when it was first announced? I actually like that design and it looks more "next gen" to me with the curves.
Dont know why all the disagrees it look sweet and was actually designed with the natural curve of your hands in mind, there was a vid years ago about it, will c if i can find it
I actually hope they place them similarly to where the 360 controller's sticks are. Call me crazy but I like the 360 design.
I like the Xbox 360 controller too. The best controller out there now, except for the terrible d-pad.
The DualShock was for the longest time "the" controller, so an update would be good as long as it's not the banana controller.
Call me crazy but I hate the 360 controller design. My hand cramps up so fast using that thing.
The only thing marginally better about the 360 controller is the concave design of the triggers imo.
Call me crazy, but the Dualshock's design is award winning for a reason. People don't have asymmetrical hands.
I don't have the 360, but every time I held the controller I was really bothered by the battery pack.
nuke
How about changing the button configuration for next COD? If t's not broken don't fix it is all *I'm saying.
Well just like with every single rumor, we'll have to wait and see. Very interested to see what Sony will bring.
I like the part about the bio-metrics. The screen however, might bring a problem for me. Such as, how big is the controller going to be and how expensive?
I do not see it being a big screen. They have the Vita and PS4 connectivity to think about and how that could be a sell for the Vita. I see it being a smaller screen
They should change it. It's a great controller but it's not as comfy as the 360 controller and now Pro controller.
They should make something similar with a more rounded approach.
Yes, it should just be a smooth white ball...nothing is as great as the Pro controller right?
The DualShock is perfect though I've been accustomed to the design since PS1 days, they tried to move away from the DualShck when the PS3 originally launched & we saw how that turned out, if its not broken don't try to fix it.
That depends on how big the screen is and what functions it has,is it for gaming or non gaming activities.
I'd welcome a new pad with improved ergonomics. Something more along the lines of the 360/Nintendo pro pads but of course, keep the current style D-Pad.
I trust Sony to design a controller that puts MS and Nintendo to shame. They always do. Sony will offer an experience you can't find anywhere else. I'm very interested in this rumored LCD touchscreen. That could be a game changer right there.
Long Live Play
What I find ironic is, the things suggested here are all Nintendo first:
a) screen built into the controller: Wii U controller. CHECK!
b) biometric sensor: vitality sensor. CHECK!
c) new controller design. Wii U controller. CHECK!
On the flip side, Nintendo created and released the Wii mote, while Sony copied it with PS Move.
So I don't see a history of putting any company to shame, but might make you wonder the opposite. :D
@nuke yeah, sega didn't have a built in screen with the dream cast console,if Sony did copied the wii mote than why didn't nintendo release the designed first?(I'm talking why didn't nintendo release the move design first sense Sony "copied them.") if you knew anything about them you would know how they work and the biometric sensor would be built in and have a better gaming function than the vitality sensor.
I'll say the same thing most Xbox fans say. It's not about who does it first, but who does it better.
So I could care less if Sony "copies" Nintendo with a Wii-U style controller, as long as they do it better (which can be done). But we'll see.
Actually the ps move was in development for over ten years. The problem was when Sony first demoed it to the developers no one took any interest to it. So the project was thrown on the back burner until suddenly kinect set it off. A lot of companies do this year round man. When the time is right they set it off. Problem is most of the games didn't take advantage of ps move or the Wii mote. Not even kinect took off that well. The games will slowly get better over time but right now the games truly do stink.
As long as they dont do that banana/boomerang design. That thing did not look good at all IMO. If they are taking something from the vita, they should include the back touch. Love it when its used wisely.
If they take anything from the vita i think they should take the d-pad and make L1 and R1 slightly rounded.
2 things about the back touch.
1. Back touch plus rumble will drain the batteries fast.
2. MS own the back touch tech that Sony is using on the VITA and they would need MS approval to use it on the controller. Too lazy to find the link that shows that MS gave Sony the ok to use the back touch tech on the VITA but here is a youtube video to MS back touch tech.
Why does everyone always say this shit?
It has to do with how used someone is with them that determines how they compare it with other controllers. I found the 360's design bulky and the analog sticks horrendously placed. At first I couldn't even get myself to coordinate my movements with them.
It has nothing to do with the 360's design. The analogs are too close together, the overall size of the controller is too small, and it needs better triggers. Directional pad is ok though.
Well since it's always 360's gamers that complain about the analog sticks one would be wise to assume you're just another one of them. And for the most part I don't find them at all too close together and the controller being small is another thing I don't necessarily agree with, but whatever man. The triggers are the one thing I can comply with, since it's convex and sometimes a pain in the ass when you leave your controller somewhere and see a video fast-forwarding itself.
Please Sony don't add a LCD touchscreen, I don't want 1/6 the cost of the console to be the controller. Also gamers keep their eyes on their screens not on the controller making a touchscreen LCD useless.
Please move the thumbsticks into their natural position.
And if you think they're currently at the natural position right now, then why the hell did Sony not have the Dpad and face buttons there in their original design.
The thumbsticks originally were an addition, they weren't the primary control method. They are the primary now, get them right.
They are in the natural position. Do you have an asymmetrical body? Again, the Dualshock design has won awards, has the 360's controller won awards? Nope. So if industry professionals are saying the design is perfect as it is, where are you credentials to say they are wrong? Your asymmetrical hands?
This is exactly what I LOVE about the Dualshock gamepad. Everything is symmetrical. I find the Xbox360 gamepad incredibly comfortable but very confusing since there isn't a direct equal on both sides.
But of course it's going to be a different experience for everyone. I grew up on the Dualshock and the previous joystick-less (but still symmetrical) PS gamepad.
The only things I'd like to see them add is an LCD/LED/OLED touchscreen about the size of the iPhone 4's screen, rear-touch panel (Vita), and a tiny amount of memory in the controller for saving profiles and saves to it. Then they could release a secondary controller, name it "Classic Dualshock" and make it identical to the Dualshock 3.
@Knight
Exactly what award(s) did the sony controller win? Because the 360 controller has been praised by many gaming sites as being the best controller this gen.
And I agree with Banned, it's as if the buzz word is "asymmetrical" for this article and people are just throwing it around freely. It's not as if the analog sticks are on the complete other ends of each other.
Besides the d-pad, the 360 is hands down the best controller. But again I think it all comes down to preference.
@Banned: If our thumbs are opposable (which you're correct about) and it's "not a big deal to move them a quarter inch" (meaning you'd have to do that for the 360 controller, then what's up with the "natural position" comments then hmm? Is it a natural position if you have to move it?
@maniacmayhem: Off the top of my head, it won an Emmy, and there was another award whose name starts with an "I" that deals specifically in technology that I can't remember. But yeah, what awards has the 360's controller won?
**EDIT** Emmy source. It's the Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards.
http://www.emmyonline.org/m...
Can't find that other one though, sorry.
**EDIT 2** LMAO! XMB won an Emmy too and according to camp 360 it sucks. BAHAHA!
@CC-Tron: Click the link, and see for yourself.
"The Emmy® Award for PERIPHERAL DEVELOPMENT AND TECHNOLOGICAL IMPACT OF VIDEO GAME CONTROLLERS
Nintendo, for the D-pad innovation on the NES/Famicon controller. Sony Computer Entertainment America, for the Dual Shock Analog Controller."
@ Knight
"But yeah, what awards has the 360's controller won?"
So is this what needs to win gamers over and prove their worth when a design wins ONE award? It is automatically deemed the best controller ever?
C'mon Knight even you can't believe that.
"then what's up with the "natural position" comments then hmm? Is it a natural position if you have to move it?"
I can seriously tell you that anyone making a "natural position" comment hasn't fully played on the 360 and it is ridiculous to say that the 360 thumb positions are not natural or comfortable. Again if you follow what others say and believe 100% then that is your business.
I'm sure I could find just as many sites or polls that say the 360 controller is better than "x" controller. Again it comes down to personal preference not one award given out to the original duel shock design years ago.
Since when did I say I wanted asymmetrical thumbsticks? Idiots can't even read.
When there were no thumbsticks on the playstation controller, where did they place the buttons? In the most natural position.
EDIT - lol, PMed DragonKnight about his complete fail to understand the English language. Got blocked.
Or just make it so the different components can be switched out to where you prefer them. I personally like the way the current controller is set up as I find it comfortable to use. Shoulder buttons could use a bit better placement IMO, but other than that it's a solid controller.
Just because you prefer something one way doesn't mean where they are now is wrong, or that your opinion has more merit than others.
Not sure it's necessarily a bad idea, but it does worry me. We are in an age where everyone seems to be building based on knee-jerk reactions to each other when most of the time most gamers just want slight improvements on what they've already been using.
I want a controller that feels familiar, comfortable, and has all the buttons, triggers, joysticks, and dpad I'm familiar with. I don't want more gimmicky ways to play or interact with my games. I don't want a new screen on my controller. I just want to play my games in a familiar manner.
I like the controls tbh, maybe they could add some sort of rubber underneath, dropping can easily break things.
The triggers could be better.
a controller? -_-
They need more advertising and exclusive deals with 3rd parties. That is the only thing I saw that they were lacking with PS3, everything else seems fine.
Back in the day we had thick, rectangle controllers that didn't conform to your hands. You had to make due with such controllers for games that seem to have more difficulty than today's.
People seem spoiled in the present.
sure as long as they keep the analog stick on that same place im ok with it, i like the positioning of the analog stick of the ps3 than from the xbox for me its more fluid for motion.
Response to isalas....
Micro spent millions on their controller according to you yet i prefer ps3 controller so whats your point? The Controller design has been kept because its awesome the only thing they need to fix are the triggers imo.
Your choice in controller does not make you're preferred controller the better of the two. When you compare the 360 controller to the PS1 dual shock controller (yup I made the reference to the original one because of the lack of evolution) You can immediately see its superior ergonomic design off the bat. The placement of the joysticks on the 360 pad have been more thoughtfully designed than the PS3. Of course the 360's controller should be superior when you compare it against the PS3's controller which has not been redesigned since 1996. Lets use logic for a second and lets remove the fanboy goggles and here me out:
If you recall the original play station controller and the later introduced Dual Shock controller. The joysticks and its placement were an afterthought. The joysticks are not ideally placed when comfort is your #1 priority.
You said it so it must be fact.
"...remove the fanboy goggles..." Right. Nice bro.
Actually the dual shock has seen quite a few changes since the PS1 days.

To me, the analog sticks are perfectly comfortable for the way I hold the controller. They sit exactly where my thumbs would. If anything, the dpad placement can cause my hand to go numb as I have carpel tunnel.
There is no real need for evolution. The controller has been a staple to the PS brand for over 15 years. It just needs minor tweaking, which they've done every generation so far.
As far as design goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Millions of people like the controller the way it is, and they said as much before the PS3's release.
The controller design has not been kept because it's awesome. It's been kept cause of the constant whining of people who fail to realize that in a field such as ergonomy, no 15 years old design is ever the best.
Just cause it's good enough for old fans doesn't mean it should never change. I'm sure they can come up with something better. In fact I'm sure the boomerang could have been better.
hmmmmmmm you dont say..... and i quote....
The DualShock controller was given an Emmy Award for "Peripheral Development and Technological Impact of Video Game Controllers" by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on January 8, 2007.[29]
That equates to awesome imo and i could care less about awards ps3 controller feels good and natural in my hands
Interesting. Cant wait to see what is revealed when and if their press conference comes to pass.
i hope they put the left analog stick like on the xbox one, way better in FPS games, that's why i bought a Cyborg PS3 gamepad where you can switch the positions of the analog stick and dpad.
Hopefully, they'll still have support for the DS3. I'd rather use the DS3 for everything. I find it extremely comfortable and I prefer it over the xbox controller.
The thing I hated about the xbox controller was that I switched between xbox and PS3 for a while and it was hard to adapt to the controller differences when I switched. When I went from 360 to PS3, my thumbs kept bumping into each other and it was annoying. However, once I used the PS3 controller for a while, my thumbs went back to using just the tips (which I find more comfortable anyway).
Anyway... I hope they at least give us the option to still use the DS3. I've got 8 of them in my house right now. If that seems kinda high, just know that I also have 3 PS3s as well.
Great your a hardcore fan!!! So I'm I get wait for PS4 to own next generation with Uncharted 4, God of War 4, Killzone 4, and new Ips they make every year.
This is just like the Iphone 5 not using the same charger, like the previous generation Iphones. Gonna miss the Dualshock controller. It is the best controller ever!!! It was great with fighting games, shooting games, sport games, and etc. I like it better than the bulking mess Xbox 1 and 360 had lol!!!! That joint was a hulk (xbox 1) back in the day LMAO!!! Now its N64, Dreamcast in a small size ripoff.
LMAO!!! Did you know the PlayStation controller was primarily designed for the small and tiny hands Japanese people have? The majority of the population have larger hands and the "hulk" of a pad the xbox 1 had was probably better suited for the rest of us. The Xbox controller was then perfected with the 360. :)
Surely Im not the only one fed up with rumours and reports been pulled from thin air to get easy views. Report news with basis for the sake of journalism.
Damn, I guess it was just a matter of time. So many good memories with that model of controller.
I hope the only thing they change is they move the buttons around and add a rear touch panel. The shape of the dual shock has been a perfect form since the beginning.
Just make it bigger, some of us have hands that are the size of a real man. dual shock xl!
I've gotten so accustomed to the DualShock controller that I think it will take some time before I get use to a new controller
wouldn't making the daulshock 3 simply bigger help your cramping hands? i don't think it needs a new design except indented analogs and improve triggers.
As already stated above, MS was clearly, well let's call it inspired by Sony, when they designed their control. They probably switched d-pad position to avoid being sued.
sony needs two controllers IMO
the classic dualshock design (best controller of all time,i wont use anything else) and a
shooter friendly pad with triggers for the millions of xbox owners who chose xbox over ps3 SIMPLY FOR THE CONTROLLER
its pathetic that people actually chose one or another because of this but its true
I can't imagine buying PS4 with something different than Dual shock as a controller. I hope it is something like move not must have.
Just please don't add a touchscreen to the controller, but instead just have the vita as an optional controller along with the ds3.
Its time for a change. Dual shock was too small.i don't want a tablet controller though.
I want to see and impress me. But please sony make my dualshock 3 compatible to ps4 as an option
The only way I see this happening is to keep from paying anyone royalties on the tech. They don't own the rights to rumble tech, right?
My guess is that they will try to incorporate the "move" technology into the controller and then be like "oh look it has Move built in wanna buy it its only $500?"
I'd be fine with this being true so long as what they were using instead was more ergonomic like the Dreamcast or Xbox controllers. The Dual Shock is a really uncomfortable controller relative to those.
Just another rumor article when it lists sources in the industry. Anyone can say this! A friend of mine I know is working on a game to appear on the PS3 and PS4 and says the Controller is only getting a little bigger in size. It's true. Did you believe it? Sorry i made it up!
Hell no, DS is the best pad there is. If there is a new pad, they better make DS ones too...
If it isn't broke, don't fix it! The dualshock does need a matte finish though with trigger L2 & R2.
So much Smoke! There is a Next Gen Fire somewhere that's about ready to burn out of control. The leaks are now starting to become more frequent. If the PS4 has a touch screen then and its to work in tandem with playing games then I'm sure this console is gonna be quite capable.
60fps 1080p 3D... And capable of out putting 4K... If the console is reportedly capable of all that then I'm cool with upgrading.. ill put the PS3 in the bedroom and put the PSOrbis in the living room. :-)
"The new console - codenamed Orbis - will be revealed in a matter of weeks, not months."
i say give us the option of the PS3 controller working on the PS4 and weeks not months of the PS4 being show so Feb or March :/
I just hope that if they end up going in this direction that they've learnt from their previous mistakes (e.g. removing rumble). Personally, I wasn't too keen with the boomerang controller that they showed at E3 2005 either so it would be better if the design wasn't too drastic.
This isn't the first time they were going to change it with the ps3 the boomerang controllers we saw where that went right back to the dual shock face it all they try the 15 year old design of the play station controller isn't going anywhere
I won't mind just as long as they don't mess with the analog stick placement. Maybe just make the controller a little heavier with some added bulk, and some new triggers.
And to the people claiming that the controller is to small try learning to hold it the play station controller isn't meant to grasped like a steering wheel it's meant to lay in your fingers and your hand rest on the sides
as long as they allow dual shock 3 to work as well, i dont care what new ones they make.. I think this has truth to it.. I believe all the new consoles will have a smalle screen built into them for huds, maps, inventory screens, hot keys, etc.. but we shall see
Meh CVG sources ? As if CVG was some serious site with journalits and investigations
Third party manufacturer releases DualShock inspired controller at half the price for PS4 launch. Bazinga!
I already know the ps4 gonna have they own version of the Wii u gamepad
I think it is time for a new pad design but I hope they keep the DS3 as an optional controller for those who would rather use it. I am sure the new system will have bluetooth so I am pretty sure that is what they are planning on.
I owned a playstation one for a very brief time. I did not buy a playstation two because it shared the controller of the ps1. Then came the ps3. Obviously my dislike of the controller carried over. I do not care what alternatives were available, nothing beats the compatibility and quality in most cases as the original controller. The playstation series controllers are small, and uncomfortable in my hands. The triggers sucked. So hopefully the ps4 will be my return to the playstation brand. Hopefully they listened to us big hand people complain on countless forums about the same restricting issue.
To me there is little excuse to go three gens with the same controller design in size and layout. Two ok, but not three.
I have an opposing view to that because when you have something that makes everyone happy why change it for minorities? In the case of the Xbox it made perfect sense to shrink the damn thing but honestly when I play an old Nintendo game with a new controller I find myself confused on how to play it. When it comes to PlayStation I already know the button layout and it all comes back naturally like always. When Nintendo came out with the GameCube I immediately hated the button layout. It went from being somewhat standard from design to design until that controller came out. It felt alien to me. After Sega introduced the oddly placed analogue stick for the dream cast I stopped playing anything Sega.... I do admit that the Sega controller was easier to play with the analogue stick because it was convex. Concave thumb sticks really do a number to my finger joints.
why should they throw something most are ok with and could easily still be improved , for your sake and "big handed people" only ?Especially when not even all big handed people got issues ...
There are still alternative for you guys even if not the official ones . And would suck either way , unless two different set of controllers see the day to satisfy everyone , wich none will do .
Why the hell are you asking me why should they change it? Go to their forums and ask them. I clearly stated why I don't like the controller and the so called alternatives.
Can't wait for the details to start releasing, I trust Sony will Wow us.
They had to change.
The triggers just didn't work well and the DualShock design was not meant to accomodate them.
When I bought my 360 and switched from DualShock to 360 pad, it was annoying for about half an hour and then it seemed like second nature.
But now each time I switch back from my 360 to my PS3, I can't ever get used to the DualShock again.
The fact that most PS3 shooters don't even map aim down sights/shooting to L2/R2 says it all.
I also hope we get concave nubs on the next PS3 pad.
Can't fathom why Nintendo ripped everything off the 360 pad for the WiiU, except the concave nubs which are so confortable.
If they do change the controller, I'd like to see a cross between the Vita/smartphone and the dualshock with built in Move sensors. This'll give the controller a ton of options.
They better not completely abandon the original dualshock design.
i do love the dual shock controller but there is some changes that the design need. The analogue sticks need to be concave and the triggers pointed outwards, at least this is what should be included in the next design.
the xbox 360 controllers are the best for any thing that involves shooting and in todays games, thats 95% of game releases
That may be true, but Keyboard and mouse beats it hands down. Controllers simply suck for FPS games, i've been playing them for years and cannot use a controller for them anymore they are just too slow/awkward to use.
Pc is best for FPS games, and has better games.
Let me guess, they're going to be really innovative and put a touchscreen in the middle of the controller. Maybe but a ball on top of it for no apparent reason.
What ever they decide is fine with me. I trust Sony the best controller possible. All I ask is that they shape the bumpers correctly this time around.
PDP grips work well but lets get it correct day one...
Biometric? Valve are already doing this for PC.
But Oculus Rift sounds amazing so far, i believe it will be be much better than offerings from any console from what's been said about it so far.. most immersive VR ever.
Man I like the dualshock controller and atleast maybe still can be used on PS4. Also I'm amused how a lot of people(sony bots) think the dual shock is the industry standard when the xbox360 controller gets most of the acclaim in the industry. Also learned today from the article that MS gets a cut on the dualshock as it owns 10% of immersion and they get a cut on blu rays as it uses a codec owned by MS. Funny how these things come to the forefront after some good investigative work. Not that I wanted to be off topic a bit but just wanted the sony only fiends that these companies work hand in hand more than we think! Also I never played vita. So was hoping some owners could shed some light on feel if its what PS4 is looking at as comparable controller. Shit its actually gonna be great for those who own one cause it will probably have remote play and you will have 2vita like controllers.
Hope this doesn't mean Wii U copycat control/touch crap...don't do it Sony, and you MS!
They patented a design like this in 2009.
If it is Vita like with added triggers, I'd be happy. Vita is fantastic for controls.
I welcome it. It's basically the same design from 1995. Other than adding rumble and analog a little later on. It hasn't really changed at all.
Its about time....they recycled the same controller 3 generations in a row...its time to move on people.
terrible move for sony. what, the PS move will be the main controller? xbox controller? Wii U controller? there is nothing left other than to copy
I like the DS design as it is, but it's what I'm used to. If I had to change anything it would be the triggers, and I'd use a different material with a bit of texture or grip to it rather than that slick ass plastic they're currently made of .
Finally! After all the iteration of the Playstation it's only the control pad that hasn't had any changes ever since.
I'm thinking and hoping that it would have a removable clip-on style 5 and above inch touch screen.
1. i don't see sony doing away with the dualshock design. at all.
2. lol @ "sources". they're never correct - was their "source" some random internet blogger, just like the one who claimed the next xbox was going to be more powerful than the next playstation without having any concrete evidence of either of the systems' specs?
The DualShock 3 is a great solid controler already.
A LCD screen would only distract from the screen, it would be a cheap gimmick, something Microsoft would be interested in, watch!
If anything should be added, it should be input and or feedback.
A "hyper!" powerfull rumble is a good idear.
-Change L2/R2 to concave triggers, like 360
-Change both analog sticks to concave faces, like 360
-Smooth out all the edges
-Hope developers are smart enough to keep L1/R1 for Aim and Shoot, but use the triggers for racing games. Or at least leave the stone age of not being able to customize your controller.
Not controller related, but these devs need to learn to get rid of inverted controller schemes and only use them in their proper manner, any game that lets you fly.
Do not add a gimmicky screen or gimmicky move features, do not go the path of Nintendo and their horrible controllers. That is the reason Nintendo lost me after the SNES.
Please no, I'm used to the DS3. Biometrics could be cool, but no touch stuff.
NO! I use my DS3 for everything... Even my PC gaming!
They just have to update it, sort some things out here and there to make it even better and they'll be good to go
I love the Dualshock controller, and if they didnt change it, I would love it
perfect controller in my opinion.. nice button layout (though I guess, its just because I am soooooo used to it.), nice form factor.
only change I would request to be had would be that they modify the part of housing that holds the analogue sticks wherein I wish it would be like whats in the vita(encased in a piece of metal to avoid chipping)
