Disney Infinity looks like a toy-collecting, world-creating good time - GameZone Preview

GameZone's David Sanchez writes, "I was pretty skeptical when I walked into the El Capitan Theatre in LA to check out the big Disney Infinity presentation. I didn’t know what to expect, but I had heard plenty of rumors about a Skylanders-like IP with Disney characters. It seemed like a cool idea, but no one knew for sure if that was going to be unveiled. Epic Mickey 2 left a bitter taste in my mouth, and that's exactly the reason I was so skeptical about this whole thing. After Disney Interactive’s big presentation, however, I was glad to walk out of the theatre completely stoked for what seems to be an awesome project."

I was looking forward to this game until they revealed that it would be a toy collecting game ala Skylanders. I know that it's ignorant of me to dismiss a game just because of one reason, but I'm not about to drop $60 on a video game, just to have to pay for any character I want to play as. At $60, I expect enough content to suffice as a full video game.

EDIT: If this game (and Skylanders, for that matter) was a free download, with every character costing money themselves, that would make more sense. I wouldn't mind getting Skylanders for free and then $30 for three characters and the portal. Same with Disney Infinity.

Bad for parents, endless fun for children in collecting toys.

That's why Skylanders sells a lot.

That's kind of a cynical way to look at it though because those separate characters have their benefits. You keep your save in the figure, not the game, so you can take it to your friend's place and play it on their system if he owns a PS3 and you own a 360. I don't know, I find that feature to be really convenient.

Plus, at the very least you can keep the figures as little collectibles.

@ForgottenProphecy

That's a good point. I would argue that playing as all the different characters in DI or Skylanders is not as rewarding as it is in a Smash Bros. game, but having to buy each character for those prices is certainly a viable complaint.

I wouldn't want to own the entire set either way lol. Just a small handful of characters.

ForgottenProphecy4108d ago

True, but the prices are still steep. Imagine playing Super Smash Bros Brawl, but having to buy the toys to play as each character. Each character (besides the obvious clones) brings their own thing to the table, and it's not the full experience without them all.

Like I said, for $60, I should get a full game. Sure each character can have save data on it, but there aren't really many situations where that comes in handy. The one you mentioned is probably the only one.

sky landers never really interested me but this does, maybe its the graphics style or that it's Disney characters.

either way I'm interested.

Is Disney Infinity Coming To The PS5 & Xbox Series X?

There is a huge gap in the market at the moment. There aren’t many (if any) toys-to-life games available for the two consoles yet. A reboot or remake of the game would work so well, especially with Disney’s current roster of characters, films and TV shows.

Did Disney sell the rights to Activision? I never knew they had the rights to Disney Infinity.

They DO have the rights to Skylanders though.

Plus there's a financial reason every publisher gave up on the "toys to life" thing. So I doubt they'll revive any of them.

BrainSyphoned797d ago (Edited 797d ago )

It wasnt Skylanders fault Activision squeezed the cow too hard.

"During its earning calls, Activision confirmed that Skylanders: Swap Force had made them more money than Call of Duty: Ghosts. Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed the numbers, putting Skylanders at a whopping $2 billion in revenue after it sold 175 million toys.May 7, 2014"

"Skylanders Reached the Milestone of 250 million figures sold in 2015 and passed $3 billion made"

Is it possible Disney Infinity or other toys to games could return, but I'll be honest I really hope they don't come back.

These kinds of games are just another way for the game studios to nickle and dime you for every cent you have.

Disney Infinity was a fun game I could play with my kid back in the day. I still have it and the 100+ toys and yes, it works on PS5. But my kid is a teenager now and we've both moved on to more serious games.

Fluke_Skywalker798d ago

Exact same thing here, we played Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions. Both were great but are now just two big boxes full of stuff that never gets used.

We played Lego Dimensions, too.. and I still have all those toys. It also works on PS5.
