Deep Silver shouldn’t have to apologize for Dead Island Riptide bikini statue

Travis Bruno of Capsule Computers writes:

"Stop the outrage because those of you so up in arms probably wouldn’t have bothered with this title anyways. If you don’t like it? Don’t buy it. Don’t stop a company from trying to do something unique."

It really is just pathetic that so many people are up in arms over this thing. I like how this guy mentions that people complaining now are just hypocrites who only want to complain when things are in their favor but then blast anything else. Would a male torso have looked better? No it would have been boring and bland and like a chunk of blood covered tan clay. Unless they just make it of the guy's swimming trunks or something, then no one would complain because guy sexualization is "A Okay."

anime_swag_pro4111d ago

You really are pushing the boundaries here by telling the cold hard truth to a bunch of male gamers on a gaming site.

Bimkoblerutso4111d ago

It's not that I'm offended by it or anything, I'm just...I don't know. It's just getting so goddamn tiring. Did we really need zombie chicks to be sexualized for us once again? It's not even funny or edgy at this point.

Still, the feminists are equally tiring, if not more so.

palaeomerus4111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

" You really are pushing the boundaries here by telling the cold hard truth to a bunch of male gamers on a gaming site."

If you ever bought and played God of War and enjoyed it, then shut the hell up now, ya hypocrite. The boundaries you want to whine about "pushing" are YOUR problem not Koga88's. He's right. Being offended is not a license to chide and censor everyone you disagree with. Your sense of taste is not law. Get over your own silly outrage.

discordman4111d ago

You don't understand, do you?

Lvl_up_gamer4111d ago

I don't get it.

The game takes place on a tropical island. I don't know how old you people are but I go on vacations to Cancun, Miami, Jamaica, Hawaii etc and the beaches are covered with chicks in bikinies. If a zombie outbreak would occure, there would be a lot of hot zombie chicks in bikini's.

The game's environment is a tropical island hence their decapitated female zombie statue in a bikini. It's not rocket science here people. The stereotype of a zombie is a male. I think it's great that they are using a female. Nice to get some equality in the zombie market.

true, but who knows maybe its just us, maybe the majority of men are as ripped as kratos, jin, dante, maybe they are a perfect looking like the prince, nathan drake, all men blatantly have 6 pack abs, raging biceps, and walk around shirtless.

showtimefolks4111d ago

i don't think they should have to apologies or explain them self. its a limited edition you can just buy the regular edition and enjoy the game like me

people will complain no matter what so developers/publishers should always do what they think is best.

LinkageAX4111d ago

Games are not accurate representations of reality. I thought that everyone would have worked this out by now, what with all the idealised characters and unrealistic settings.

@Koga88 - But you're completely missing the point. It wouldn't be as offensive if it were a male torso, that's true, but that's because, unfortunately, it's still (though it's getting better, no thanks to things like this) a man's world.

Women are still marginal in society to a degree- are still subject to asymmetrical, patriarchal relations of power. In other words, a women are made by men, by the demands of men, and they mightn't even realize it.

If this relation was reversed, a male torso would probably become offensive. The issue here is the objectifying of a marginal group in society- circulating noxious ideas about femininity and silencing the female voice.

I wonder how many women were involved in the conception of that bust...

LinkageAX4111d ago

This post is retarded. Did you take a year or two in womens studies or something equally ridiculous?

masterabbott4111d ago

I agree with you on this one, people are totally taking this out of proportion there is nothing wrong with this at all. Its original and very well designed and something no one has even thought of doing! 5 stars to Deep Silver for originality and smarts on getting this out!

It is surprising that so many people have caught wind of this. Interesting article though.

-MD-4111d ago

That might have been their intention. This is great publicity for the game.

Hellsvacancy4111d ago

This is the first ive seen of this, the thing looks bloody awful, who in there right mind would want to buy that, it looks tacky, a statue of a zombie head would of been cool

JD_Shadow4111d ago

Then don't buy it, which is what the guy in the article said!

If a person thinks that the thing sucks, then fine, but people shouldn't whine and cry about them making it like two year olds. How many people now know about this thing existing because the few people that knew about it bitched about it? Now people are curious and may want to buy it, and give the publishers incentive to do more of that.

And really, even if it isn't what they thought it would be, what's so wrong about it that it deserves this kind of backlash?

It's simple: this is another example of the internet arguing over the stupidest shit and acting as though the world is gonna end tomorrow if something about it doesn't change right now. Either that or they troll constantly just to see how far they can get things to go. Why is it that shit like this happens way too often, and that way too many people do this sort of thing? Is this what we've become as a society?

-Gespenst-4111d ago

It shouldn't just be a matter of "don't buy it" - reducing everything to monetary worth. You've got to be more critical about these things. There's more to this than just your money's worth, it's about representation, it's about gender, it's about our culture. All these things seem to have been obscured by consumerism. It's all about value and object fetishism and luxury. What happened to actual values?

JD_Shadow4110d ago

Which wouldn't get exposure and publicity if you would just ignore it.

Thing is, corporations speak money, and if you don't buy something they put out, then they do get the message. It DOES go down to monetary worth because these people run a business. They are there to make money. If they don't make money off of something, then they will just not do it and try something else.

But doing this just gives things exposure and more potential buyers, which means we'll have more people talking and buying the thing than people who just ignore it.

Is it something that deserves the exposure and/or ridicule? I don't know. I don't know if the controversy surrounding it is sufficient and I think some of it is people using strawman arguments. Some people might want the thing, and that's their right. If they really want to buy it, then it's their money. But don't cry when you see more of hot button items like this and you wonder why the hell corporations continue to sell them.

It's because they know that people will BUY them! Which is why this IS a monetary issue. Speak with your wallet. What else CAN you do, really, about it. You can't force others to not buy it because they have just as much right to buy it as you do to not buy it. Simple as that!

ManDemon4111d ago

Zombie head would have been. I'd feel like this kind of gives off a psycho vibe.

Blastoise4111d ago (Edited 4111d ago )

That would look lovely right above my fireplace

JoMO4111d ago

Would look excellent next to my leg lamp...

Agreed. What's with these special-interest groups forcing political correctness down everyone's throats?

Bethesda & Xbox To Meet Up With Laid-Off Deep Silver Volition Employees

According to a LinkedIn post, Bethesda and Xbox Game Studio representatives will meet up with Deep Silver Volition employees.

shinoff2183216d ago (Edited 216d ago )

That's pretty cool, but didn't they just lay of 10k as a whole. Reportedly some from the gaming division even.

Confused in pa.

Sonyslave3216d ago

Yes they did , it the circle of life in the tech bizz.

blackblades216d ago

Circle of life of meh games

mkis007216d ago (Edited 216d ago )

This is called good PR. And an opportunity to hire veterans over scrubs.

phoenixwing215d ago

Not to call them scrubs but yeah some veteran devs are more welcome than others with less experience

Flakegriffin214d ago (Edited 214d ago )

You can hire veterans all day long but it’s the talent Microsoft lacks.

Zeref215d ago (Edited 215d ago )

It was mostly outside of gaming. Most of the game studios weren't affected besides 343i and Coalition from what I recall

Charlieboy333215d ago (Edited 215d ago )

But of course. Just look at the latest Saint's Row....that is exactly the level of quality and writing that Xbox strives for these days.

Aloymetal214d ago

Nope, like Redfall, Craig infinite

ravens52215d ago

There u go. This is way more acceptable than buying up studios. Buy individual talent until you strengthen your already owned studios. 👏🏽

Deep Silver Says No Saints Row, TimeSplitters or Dead Island at E3

Deep Silver has revealed that several of its major franchises would not be at E3 2021 or the Summer Game Fest.

execution171049d ago

Kind of expected TS4 not to be there since they just got a team together for it

Duke191049d ago

Why even show up then? (kidding...ish)

DOMination-1048d ago

Their parent (Embracer) owns close to 70 studios now and they have ~150 games in development.. but those three are certainly amongst the largest IP they hold so not an unfair point..

Dead Island 2 is such a weird one - it reminds me of Homefront in that its a sequel to a fairly ordinary game and going through multiple developers and concepts.. unless it is shaping up to be properly amazing, at some point somebody needs to just say this game isn't worth the time and money.

strayanalog1049d ago

Some truth in advertising here, as they must really know something(y) that I don't know.

porkChop1049d ago

I just hope that the next Saint's Row is a bit more grounded. SR2 was great because in terms of gameplay and story it had just enough wackiness. SR3 was good, and fun, but got a bit too crazy adding zombies and all that. Just go back to what made SR2 so great.
