DmC Devil May Cry's stylish action and visuals make for the perfect reboot - GameZone review

GameZone writes, "DmC: Devil May Cry is a reboot done right. It keeps the soul of the Devil May Cry series and changes enough to make it fresh. The way they've changed Dante and revisited events is handled perfectly, so hardcore fans and newcomers alike should enjoy it. The stylish action, platforming, visuals, story and voice acting make for an experience that can be summed up as 'a ton of fun.'"

from what I have played, and all the youtube videos I have seen this game is not a DMC game at all. It is a decent action game, but as a DMC game it sucks.

ThanatosDMC4112d ago

"There is an argument to be made that, when judged alongside the rest of the series, DmC is a bad Devil May Cry game. The suggestion may be debatable, but there's a potential case to be made. It's more streamlined, it's not as challenging, and ultimately it has stripped away what a significant portion of the fanbase love most of the series. However, even if one sides with the argument that this is a bad Devil May Cry game, that does not preclude it from being deemed a terrific videogame on its own merits, and in my estimation, that's exactly what DmC: Devil May Cry is."

Good game but terrible DMC game. This is the COD version of the DMC franchise.

indeed. And let me say that I was going to write that same thing. XD

Nice to see a reviewer acknowledging this unlike all the others with their pathetic hyperbole saying that the reboot's the best DMC game yet and that it sports the deepest battle system too. And not to mention Gamespot that said: "reboots the series without compromising its soul" even though NT changed basically everything from battle system to the story and its tone with constant cursing, angsty protagonist, serious tone, tacky sex scenes, etc.

Bathyj4112d ago

Thats interesting.

I thought SC:Conviction was a good game, just a bad Splinter Cell game.

Ghost Recon:Future Soldier however was just bad in every way.

DragonKnight4112d ago (Edited 4112d ago )

"It's more streamlined, it's not as challenging, and ultimately it has stripped away what a significant portion of the fanbase love most of the series."

That is almost word for word what reviewers slammed Ninja Gaiden 3 for. And yet, DmC gets praise for that exact same thing. Seriously, I really really want to know what in the actual f*ck is up with that. Does anyone have a legit answer? I mean, isn't it a double standard to like the same thing about one game that you hated about another game in the same genre?

**EDIT** @LordMe: Well with Dark Souls 2, people are (and it's very understandable given the delicate nature of the Souls series' very existence) going off what Shibuya said. It could be mistranslations, or it could be what we fear. The Souls series is probably the LAST series where you want to hear the word "accessible" in the same sentence unless you're talking about a location or DLC. Shibuya talking about his experience with action games is also a red flag because that's the hint that he may change combat. Then there are those that want it to be more like Skyrim, or have a direct in your face story.

And that's the thing about many of these devs that they just don't understand what makes their games great. What makes Dark Souls great? Well, for one it's the difficulty. It challenges you to play smart instead of the way people play today which is to just rush through everything and let the cutscenes tell you what you need to know. The next is the story. Dark Souls isn't about an actual world story, it's about you making your own story with bits and pieces of the world's lore available to you as you look for it. In that sense it's like real life. I mean, we don't come into this world with a script or cutscenes telling us what life is all about, that's something we have to figure out on our own.

And probably the most important part of Dark Souls is the combat. It's just so technical and precise it's wonderful. Shouldn't even touch that unless you get rid of backstabs because, let's face it, we all hate backstabs.

But, all of the fear is coming from one interview that could have been a poor translation whereas with DmC, NT are too arrogant to keep their mouths shut.

NovusTerminus4112d ago (Edited 4112d ago )

I won't say it is a bad GAME, just a bad DMC.

The problem is that this game stands a chance of being the only one that remains, and the real DMC games may never show up again.

EDIT @Dragonknight

And what Dark Souls 2 is already being torn apart for! It is a double standard!

You misunderstand.

If you want to play the old DMC 1,2,3,4 then this is not for you. This is not DMC 5, this is DMC. Go play the old ones if thats the feel you want. This a fresh take.

Its a REBOOT. Try and understand this first and all your issues and head scratching should disappear.

So when my younger bro says wow Dante is so cool and damn dmc is so awesome etc etc then I realized to him its a fresh new dmc as he has never played any others before and it makes sense.

Again reminding ppl its a REBOOT.

Elda4112d ago

@pandehz...excellent explanation!!!....I understood exactly what you said (even though I knew this already)but it seems some people just can't comprehend that DmC is a fresh NEW & DIFFERENT approach of the DMC series, again it's NOT DMC 5,so that means things are going to be different it's a f'ing REBOOT!!

DragonKnight4112d ago

So, you're using your younger brother who never played Devil May Cry and the reboot excuse as a way to nullify legitimate complaints? Your brother, who has no prior experience with the franchise, has an uninformed opinion and somehow that legitimises this game getting away with stuff other games get slammed for? Doesn't work like that.

Again, a reboot is not an excuse. This game is a blatant cash grab on the Devil May Cry name and it's somehow an excuse to allow this game to get away with what Ninja Gaiden 3 couldn't get away with because it's a reboot? Wow. See, it's attitudes like that that are destroying franchises left and right and strengthening the idea that games need to appeal to audiences that never had any interest in these specific genres before. Attitudes like that are why Japanese developers are Westernizing their games and ruining them in the process.

You want to live in the Michael Bay era of gaming now because your little brother thinks Dante is "cool?"

HeavenlySnipes4112d ago

I don't think you guys understand. There is a reason for a reboot. You don't see a Mass Effect reboot planned, or a Halo reboot, God of War reboot etc..

Reboots are for franchises that have lost interest from the masses. As a non fan of the series, Devil May Cry 4 wasn't that great of a game. The character acting was cheesy, the fighting was easy, and the story itself was boring. Not to mention the game literally forces you to replay it over again backwards with Dante instead of Nero

Game developers make try to make games that are fun for everybody (or as much people as they can). Not just to please a core group of people. This reboot looks to be a critical success, and we'll see if its sales reflect this.

The game would be a blatant cash grab if they named it Devil May Cry 5....but they didn't

DragonKnight4112d ago

@HeavenlySnipes: I don't think YOU understand. DmC was never needed. DMC4 was Capcom's lazy job and subsequent platform to say DmC was needed when, in fact, it wasn't. What people were looking for was a Devil May Cry game that met or exceeded DMC3 (and DmC is not that game btw). What Capcom gave us was a half put together game where we had no idea what was going on and where they reused the same levels in opposite directions and even the same bosses for the 2 characters in the game. Had Capcom given the fans a game that was, say, Nero's origin story or a game where we play as Sparda, cool. Had they given us a game that tried to make us forget about DMC2's ending, no one would have complained. Instead, they chose to believe they did no wrong with DMC4 and that we simply lost interest with Devil May Cry in order to follow the casual crowd and dumb down the game. The result is DmC, the noob friendly Devil May Cry with an ugly, crude, and boorish protagonist with probably the most cliche story imaginable and some of the dumbest A.I. out there.

That's all on Capcom, not the Devil May Cry fans. You don't make a lazy game then blame the fans because they knew it was a half-assed attempt.

Would you like a tissue for all that crying you're doing?

MadMax4112d ago

2 hrs into it and can honestly say this might be one of the best dmc games to date. You haters that are complaining about a demo and the new look, are so weak and shallow. This game has some improvements over the past dmc games. Get it, you will not be disappointed. The world is frikin awesome and the combat is fluid! Animations and graphics are very, very good! The first boss hunter that you encounter is a very creative looking character! Ninja Theory knew what they were doing here. The reviews speak for themselves, 9s and 10s everywhere! Very happy with the game as I did have my doubts!

Bathyj4112d ago

Nice that someone admits he was wrong.

I dont personally know if its good, and I was never a huge fan, (played the crap out of the original DMC1 demo but then not so much the actual game.)I always liked Onimusha more, but people have been hating on this game since it was announced. Some with legitimate concerns, some just because complaining is all the rage now days.

But now that it seems the game is actually good, there seem to be more people upset that it turned out alright then there are those that are willing to admit they might have been wrong.

Anyway, I guess I'll have to actually play it to tell for myself.

wishingW3L4112d ago (Edited 4112d ago )

since when this game was announced 2 years ago it has always been praised by the media from left to right so it was a no brainer that it was going to score well across the board anyway. The complains aren't about the quality itself but about all the stuff NT changed that made a DMC game be a DMC game.

It doesn't matter if the game is good or not this reboot ain't DMC. I don't buy or play games just because of the score they get you know... If they kill a franchise I love just to use the name on a new one then that's a game I simply cannot support. Period.

Kur04112d ago

So no styles, no lock-on, bad dodge, shitty boss fights, bad ai, completely different Dante, and easy difficulty are improvements?

pandehz4112d ago (Edited 4112d ago )

So basically you want to play the exact same dmc from 1-4? IF you want to play the exact same dmc go play 1,2,3,4

Again as usual Im reminding ppl its a reboot.

LEMME POST MY EARLIER COMMENT

''If you want to play the old DMC 1,2,3,4 then this is not for you. This is not DMC 5, this is DMC. Go play the old ones if thats the feel you want. This a fresh take.

Hopefully ppl will get what im saying

MadMax4112d ago (Edited 4112d ago )

Bad dodge? Sounds like you need to work on your timing. Lock on is for rookies! Shitty boss fights? What are you smoking, you dont have to play it on easy ya know. Bad AI? Once again, play it on nephilim and up. Completely different Dante? Get over it already! It was time for a new look, the silly white hair was starting to get old.

Easy difficulties? You do realize theyre are like 6 difficulties right? 3 more that unlock for cry babies like yourself! Get hit once and your done! Guess that aint hard enough for ya. No styles? The whole game is bursting with style!

WTF are you talking about? This game is one of the best DMC games ive ever played and beats the hell outta the last one! That one was just garbage!

Elda4112d ago

@MadMax...great comment!....can't wait to play this afternoon,I always felt this was going to be a great game!

Perjoss4112d ago

I'm not sure why Ninja Theory gets a hard time, I don't understand it at all.

Heavenly Sword was a fantastic game, it really was, nice story, VERY cool characters and the combat was great, who remembers the color coded counter moves?

Enslaved, another fantastic game, sure it wasn't an 8 million seller but it had solid combat, great visuals and interesting characters and good story.

In fact, ***k it, just writing this is making me want to play both those games again.

Hicken4112d ago

When a Ninja Theory game doesn't sell, they lash out. They blamed Sony for Heavenly Sword not doing better, but it might have done better had the game had more substance.

When they get on board for a franchise with an existing fanbase, they disregard that fanbase. It's getting old by now, but anybody who's been following the development of this game should know that Ninja Theory- Tameem, in particular- was a complete dick about the whole thing. They even went as far as to say- paraphrasing- that the old games sucked.

No, I guess I don't see why people would be upset with NT. All they did was take a loved franchise and character, change it all with NO ONE wanting the changes, and then say "F*** you" to the fans of the original game.

I can't figure it out, either.

I don't doubt that the game is good. I never have. But I have no doubt that it fails as a DMC.

Xklaw4112d ago

I think that there´s a bigger issue here. Capcom keeps giving us garbage, and people keep eating eat. Streamlined Resident evil and Devil May Cry, day one dlc´s, on disk dlc... how can no one see where this is going? Where is your choice to buy a game whenever you wanted and not geting screwd on content? DLC´s used to be unlockables, now you have to pay for it ( in case of DmC you must preorder it ). Yep, keep supporting this kind of shitty practices to see what´s next on the list.

DragonKnight4112d ago

Yep, agreed completely. They'll be doing this to the rest of their franchises. Streamlining them, calling them "reboots" to get away with it, and people just eating it all up, further downgrading quality gaming for people the iPad crowd.

Elda4112d ago (Edited 4112d ago )

It's really time for the anti-DmC to give it up,telling these ridiculous theories of why this game is supposedly bad & why it's getting good reviews.Capcom hired NT to do a reboot not rewrite the Bible, majority of you haven't even played the game at all I included & preaching this madness as if it's the gospel truth,it's really time to move on,this game has gotten nothing but praise & that's from alot of reviewers big & small, even members here that are playing the game stating they are living for (enjoying) this new take on DMC.I will be picking up my copy today & I'll be stating how much fun I'm having while some of the same people whining about the same ole thing which amounts to nothing.
