Medal of Honor Should Return to the World War II Setting

OnlySP writes: Modern military shooters.

Let me guess; you’re probably groaning after reading that last sentence. And really, who can blame you? Ever since Call of Duty 4 really got the modern military ball rolling back in 2007, we’ve seen what seems like an endless parade of shooters taking place in urban environments where you shoot Russians or Arabs with M16s.

The ironic thing is that this trend was introduced because gamers were bored of another overused setting: World War II. When Medal of Honor: Allied Assault really got the WWII ball rolling in 2002, we got what seemed like an endless parade of shooters taking place in European cities where you shoot Germans or Japanese troops with Thompsons.

I would love to see a WWII game focused on Battle of the Bulge and all.

Breadcrab4117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

Yeah, it's pretty rare to see WWII levels in games set in snowy environments. Also, the general geography of that area (forests, mountains), could make for some interesting level design.

DasTier4116d ago

Lol when I think of world war 2 games I think of Medal of honour Allied Assault, spearhead and breakthrough, (had snow levels), call of duty, united offensive and call of duty 2, all had snow levels. Infact I think both of these games focuse on th battle of the bulge, especially the early cods. But a fully dustructive ww2 shooter would be epic.

@PockyKing,

I believe the medal of honour team already visted vietnam way back in the mid 2000's with Men of Valour, prior to world at war, but again a fully destructive Vietnam game is not something I'd turn down.

He'll I just want Bad Company 4, but to take inspiration from the expendables, while keeping similar open levels to the 2nd and adding in alot more gore, wolfenstien & red Orchestra style.

guitarded774116d ago

It's just weird... WWII was played out, so everything went modern warfare, now we want to go back to WWII. I wouldn't mind a new MoH in WWII if it's done right. Warfighter was in my opinion the biggest letdown of 2012. I like Killzone because it's a blend of the best things Modern/WWII/SciFi. The only downside of WWII is the limitations on weapons. A good Vietnam game would be interesting.

Wingsfan244116d ago

Vietnam would be cool, but I think it would feel a bit too similar to what World at War did with the Japanese. Just think about it though, the intensity of World War 2 battles with Frostbite 2.0, D-Day, Bulge, those battles would look amazing with the engine running on Next-gen I bet. Haha damn, I'm getting myself excited over something that probably won't happen anytime soon, damn haha.

Veni Vidi Vici4116d ago

I still don't think they've taken advantage of the future/sci-fi setting for FPS's. We've done WWII, Modern, and semi-future. How about far into the future? Yes, it's been done, but not enough, IMO. Most that have attempted it, have failed. We need more "GOOD" far future FPS's. It allows for the devs to be as creative as they want with regards to weapons, vehicles, settings, etc.

I have just one request for it. If it's going to be far into the future, it can't have powder based bullets. We won't be using gunpowder in weapons of the future. I don't get why so many futuristic games or movies gloss over that fact.

Mutant-Spud4116d ago

I'd rather see an alternate history, "what if" FPS with the high production values of Battlefield 3, have realistic technology and locations but completely fictional scenarios which are not tied to any real events.
Examples.
-France loses WW1 and there's a civil war between pro German and anti German factions.
-In the late 1930's Anti Nazi groups in Hamburg rise up against the Hitler government.
-Nationalist China emerges as the dominant faction after the defeat of the Japanese and makes war on the Soviet Union.

Bathyj4116d ago (Edited 4116d ago )

There is an alternate history shooter. Its called Resistance.

Mutant-Spud4116d ago

I don't own a PS3, there was also Singularity and wolfenstein but that's not what I'm talking about, I like the idea of something that's historically accurate except for the story, so no aliens, monsters, psychic powers or genetically engineered Nazis.

tdogchristy904116d ago

Agree,

A ww2 game that is using current engines and game ideas like open world ect. would be nice. Ww2 is so diverse, large, and unique it'd be nice to see given gaming advancements. The last game we've had was either Michael Bayafied (world at war) or using old ps2/Xbox engines (cod3?) I haven't seen anything since.

So yes, a modern game with modern techniques would be nice.

Wingsfan244116d ago

I just rebought Call of Duty 3 the other day, and that game has aged very well surprisingly enough, I was surprised when I loaded it up for the first time in like 4 years haha.

Shooters are suffocating the modern shooter scene. I agree, it's time for a relapse.

lawks_land4116d ago (Edited 4116d ago )

The cause of Modern shooters was an oversaturation of WWII shooters. Mayhaps it works in reverse?

Bathyj4116d ago

I'm not groaning. I haven't loved a CoD game since part 2.

FarCryLover1824116d ago

Yes, WW2 would be a "fresh" setting for some new FPS'es.

Remembering Medal Of Honor: The Forgotten Master Of WW2 Games

Ibrahim from eXputer: "The Medal of Honor franchise was once the crown jewel of FPS war games, later defeated by the tides of time and poor development."

banger882d ago

They tried to turn it into Call of Duty and it killed it off. They should reboot it and go back to it's roots. But they'd ruin it with online-only/multiplayer style bullshit so why bother? I have very fond memories of these games, but this series can stay dead as far as I'm concerned.

FPS_D3TH1d 2h ago

Was literally just thinking of this game the other week with the secret nut cracker mission and the shooting Bismarck dog lmao. Loved these games as a kid

PrecursorOrb1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

I wish they’d remake warfighter

Strictly for the campaign

The_Hooligan1d ago

I have fond memories of playing the Medal of Honor Breakthrough MP Demo. It had two maps and custom servers. Living on campus, I had it downloaded on one of the PC Lab servers so I could access it on any computer at the university. Joined a clan and made friends that I still keep in touch with today.

Players claim Fortnite ruined Call of Duty by letting in more corporate greed

Do you remember what gaming was like before Fortnite entered the gaming space? One of the biggest arguments was about loot boxes. Now we have conversations about crossovers, battle passes, and community outreach.

Idk. Loot boxes did disappear and battle passes and in game purchases are all cosmetic. We get free weapons and maps post launch, any gameplay affecting content. I could care less about all the cosmetics.
I absolutely hated the days where weapons were locked behind a less than 1% chance lootbox pull where it'd take 5+ hours to have enough tokens to do a single pull and lazy remastered/remake maps cost you $15 each wave or $50 for the season pass that you didn't know what you'd get and these maps were only available to those that bought it so you get a smaller pool of players match with.

Tacoboto4d ago

The "good ole days" are actually what drove me away from COD and Halo 3/Reach. Halo 4 becoming a COD-like drove me away from that only a week or so after it launched and I beat its campaign.

It sucked way back then, going a month or two without playing online-shooter-of-the-moment, and then needing to buy a $15 map pack to play with the majority of the population or your favorite playlist. The "community" rejecting Spartan Points in MCC killed that game's support, too. No revenue = no support, plain and simple.

Cacabunga4d ago

That headline could easily be something Spencer could have said 😅 I had to check if it was really an opinion piece

KyRo4d ago

As times gone on, the COD battle pass has got ALOT worse so they can push people to buy the more premium battle pass which itself is a huge rip off and nearly half the price of the base game.

The cosmetics can be fine but they've taken it to far to the point of no return. Why make a military themed game then have rabbits, dinosaurs, cats, rats & z list rappers as skins? You wouldn't add a Lamborghini to a fantasy RPG to replace a horse and you would never see Mario have limb dismemberment because they know what they are. COD is having identity crisis but kids and streamer but then all

franwex4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Call of duty can simply not copy the bad aspects of Fortnite? Or is that too out of this world? Like COD, a realistic shooter-just HAD to have Nicki Minaj running around? Or super heroes?

Inverno4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Exactly! Trends don't all need to be followed. Plus where Fortnite got somewhat better with it's monetization, Acti got worse. Or at least Fortnite has lended itself more to the wacky stuff, and has put more effort and quality into that stuff.

jjb19814d ago

I prefer the battle passes with free maps than the $50 season pass that divided the community. I definitely feel that Fortnite had some influence on CoD having loot boxes with Blackout being introduced in 2018 with Black Ops 4.

PRIMORDUS4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Actually Fortnite bullshit ruined Unreal Tournament. Epic are sellouts and I will never have that shitty store on my PC, fuck them and that shit bag Tim Sweeney. At least the community keeps the games alive, I still play UT2004.

StoneTitan4d ago

I mean cant really blame them for supporting the game that made them the most money and the most people player...ever?

Psychonaut854d ago

Call of Duty ruined Call of Duty. They needed no outside assistance.

Ra30304d ago

100% correct! The makers of Call of Duty ran out of ideas long, long ago so they take ideas from other games like Ghost Recon, Fortnite and any other FPS game hat had success hell CoD remasters maps that they've remastered several times already then charge you again for it. Call of Duty is simply a cut, copy and paste and then put the $70 price on it every year. Activision and now Microsoft has been essentially remastering Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare every year since it was released in 2007 its to the point it's worse than the sports game like the Madden, NBA and others yearly sports franchises.
@Psychonaut85 is spot on "Call of Duty ruined Call of Duty. They needed no outside assistance"!
