Wii U game sales 'far behind launch levels for Gamecube and Wii'

Reacting to last night's release of NPD sales data for the US market in December, Cowen said in a research note: "Software sales for the Wii U remained well behind launch levels for the original Wii and GameCube in December.

"Totals for the November-December period were -43% lower than software sales for the Wii and -50% lower than those for the GameCube."

It's probably the launch price, as well as the confusion caused over those who still don't know the difference between the Wii and the Wii U (read: casual gamers). Hopefully the system will pull a 3DS, and sales will pick up.

The launch numbers are more decent than that of the 3DS from what I'm understanding. But if the 3DS is anything to go by, a big AAA Nintendo title or two, and its consumer base will increase much more quickly. The same probably applies to the Wii U.

derkasan4117d ago

Agreed. I'm personally waiting for a triple-A title myself before buying one of my own.

Well the Wii U does have a Super Mario game so to me it's surprizing if Wii U and it's software doesn't sell.

Blastoise4117d ago

I think Nintendo kind of overestimated New Super Mario Bro's U to be honest. They should have made a 3D Mario or something a bit more interesting.

I'm sure sales will pick up when a Zelda, Metroid ect gets announced. I'm considering picking one up for Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate

...sometimes much longer to play a game after you plug it in, because of updates, etc.

Then there's one good game and playing with the gamepad isn't much fun if you're using it for multiplayer or as my wife said, "So, my job to put things in the world so other people can have fun? That's a job. I don't want a job, I want to fucking play, too!" lol

Edit:

Also, it's hard to sell a lot of games if you've just passed a million consoles sold. That's what the games on Invisible Walls said anything.

PS3 owners don't seem to mind waiting for the system and the games to update.

Aside from the initial setup, i haven't had to spend a lot of time updating. then again, i don't play my U very often. probably cuz it has no games.

GusBricker4117d ago

The PS3 still does the mandatory install?

I haven't played a PS3 game since...shit, Uncharted 3?

PopRocks3594117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

That's a bit of an exaggeration. I recently downloaded Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed. The download took all of ten minutes and the install was an additional five. Granted that's a fifteen minute wait time, but still, it's no worse than anything I've endured on my PS3 and still a lot less than your 45 minute wait time. Which game was it for?

I assume you were playing NSMBU? Nintendo Land's multiplayer is better and more engaging for the gamepad player. You can also do ZombiU. It's more like an RTS, but the 1 on 1 multiplayer kicks major ass IMO. I guess the last one would be Black Ops 2's split screen mode? Those are the best recommendations I can think of off the top of my head.

GusBricker4117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

I was talking about when you first open the box, connect the system to the television and start it up, etc.

Nevers0ft4117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

You realise you can play the game while the update downloads in the background yeah? Then all you have is the couple of minutes it takes to install.

(I totally agree about the ZombiU multiplayer though. The person with the Wiimote has a great time but the gamepad player is left with a gimped RTS - without the "S")

EDIT - I notice you clarified by saying it was the System Update that took ages. Yet again, that could be skipped and installed it in your own time, you just wouldn't have had the online features but you could have played your games. Not ideal but at least the update wasn't mandatory.

I really should hurry up on my Zelda & Metroid HD...
then we will kick some butt!

WTG! SONYNTENDO FTW!

Dam what a horrible day for nintendo

This is entirely Nintendos fault for pushing its own games back in order to make bad ports look more appealing.

Can't say whether is unfortunate or not, but do to their bad marketing, only harcore gamers know about the console and thus are the only ones who have bought it. They can recognize the bad games fromn the good so those games are not going to sell.

All they need to to do is start releasing more games that people actually want to play. There is no problem with the console itself and people really don't care about the price because its the PS3 and 360 were above that for a long time and they still sold.

This is all a matter of whether or not the games people want are on the console.

Making those bad ports the exact same price as brand new PS3/360 games certainly didn't help either.

Wii U games that still haven't been ported to Switch

I think it's better to leave games like AC: Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash forgotten on the Wii U. Best case, they are mediocre games; worse case, they are very bad. It was a dark time for the Wii U, and the first only exists to sell Amiibo cards, whereas the second was put together in a couple of months with a shoestring budget, and it shows.

The rest of the list does have some really cool games, though. I would love to see a remake of Star Fox Zero with decent controls, and Xenoblade X doesn't require that much modification to work.

How would XCX work without dual screens functionality?

Cacabunga2d ago

Same as Paper Mario color splash. One of the best wiiu games and getting even better with dual screen. Same reason why i prefer Splatoon 1

This article leaves out Nintendo's most controversial game to date devils Third.
I personally found the cover system really fun in that one compared to at the time most fps games completely lacking one.

Stevonidas2d ago

Devil's Third is HIGHLY underrated.

repsahj2d ago

They should remake Starfox to the switch 2. Very beautiful game during gamecube days.

Kirby is always ignored or forgotten by people, so good to see it mentioned here.
Play Kirby Canvas Curse on DS, and then play Rainbow Curse on Wii U, they're really fun and unique 'platformers' without any actual jumping.
