An Important Reminder About Tetsuya Nomura: The Man Has Mad Skills

Kotaku: Tetsuya Nomura wears various hats at Japanese game maker Square Enix. He designs games, he produces them, he directs them — he also designs characters! His artwork is perhaps the most influential of the Final Fantasy series. But it’s sometimes easy to forget his pure artistic talent, and sometimes easier to get lost in his resume, whether that’s the games he’s made or is making.

Nomura is an incredible artist, wish I was half as talented as him.

Snookies124116d ago

He's fantastic at character creation, that's for sure. He's also very good at creating complex stories.

Neckbear4116d ago (Edited 4116d ago )

I agree, no man could ever rival his mad skill of drawing and including as many belts and zippers as inhumanly possible in each of his pieces. His talent of making characters seem as out of place as possible with ridiculous clothing and wacky rainbow color palettes is unrivaled, as well.

wishingW3L4116d ago

unless you're talking about "The World Ends with You", which I haven't played so I can't argue, but if you're saying it because of Kingdom Hearts then you couldn't be more wrong and you clearly don't know what a complex story is.

Kingdom Hearts is just a convoluted and pretentious mess that if it weren't for the Disney chunk to hold it together with their already established background stories the rest wouldn't be nothing more than just a bunch of anime cliches about friendship taped together with no real sense or impact.

Snookies124116d ago

@WishingW3L - Yeah man, you go ahead and make a better story if you think you can. I'm a writer, so I understand the amount of work that goes into trying to create really complex stories. When it comes to Kingdom Hearts, plot-holes be damned, there may be some but honestly with everything that goes on in the story of the game it's crazy to even think about how much effort was put into it.

It's only "convoluted" to those that don't understand it. I used to think the same way until I really started looking into the story. Yes it's hard to grasp, but to those who do manage it's really fantastic, and something we hardly see in gaming these days... A plot that has a TON of thought put into it.

Also, your "anime cliches" that you mention... You do realize that for something to become cliche obviously it means that people liked it enough for it to be continued right? I don't see anything wrong with that. Not to mention just about ANYTHING we could possibly think up these days is a rip-off of something else that's already been done or thought up.

Most talented guy at Square. Possible the ONLY talented guy at Square.

Megaton4116d ago

Agreed. His talent is utterly wasted at that company.

N4GDgAPc4116d ago

Hehe only one talented? Thats a pretty dumb comment. I bet there is someone on the team that is better concept artist than he is. Make it sound like there is no talented artists all in square-enix. He just has a fan following so he usually does the main characters designs and thats it. His character designs are great but there is defenitly people that draw a lot better.

If you think he is so talented why do you hate ff13? He had part of the game and wrote some of the story. He is so talented most people hate the game. I think its funny how people say square-enix is worthless and can't make games and then they think FFvs13 is going to be the best game ever. Guess who wrote the story that had a part of FF13? So be prepared to be dissapointed.

PshycoNinja4116d ago (Edited 4116d ago )

He designed the characters. He had nothing to do with the story of XIII. That is a blatantly false statement.

Nojima is writing Versus XIII with Nomura. The last story they wrote together was VII and Crisis Core. Nomura helped write VII and X. Those are the only FF stories he helped with. To try and discredit Nomura with a false statement like that is dishonest.

Writers on XIII:
Motomu Toriyama (scenario designer)
Daisuke Watanabe (main scenario writer)
Sachie Hirano (scenario writer)
Harunori Sakemi (scenario writer)
Yoshinori Kitase (scenario supervisor)
Kazushige Nojima (Fabula Nova Crystallis concept)

Writers on Versus XIII:
Jun Akiyama (event director & scenario director)
Kazushige Nojima (scenario writer)
Tetsuya Nomura (base story)

N4GDgAPc4116d ago

scenario designer? That means he designed how the story would go and the main writer would write it. So yes he had a part of the story.

PshycoNinja4116d ago

Read a little closer.

Tetsuya Nomura had NOTHING to to do with Final Fantasy XIII's story. NOTHING. I dont know where you are getting this Senario Designer idea from but its wrong.

N4GDgAPc4116d ago

Yeah I didn't read it very well but how about this. He is the director and scenario designer for FF13-2 and Lightning Returns FF13. So why don't people like ff13-2 still and don't care for LR13? If he is so talented shouldn't those games be considered gold because he touched it?

PshycoNinja4116d ago

That is incorrect too. Nomura is only involved in regards to story with Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

XIII - Main Character Designer
XIII-2 - Main Character Designer
LRFFXIII - Main Character Designer
Versus XIII - Main Character Designer, Director, Base Story
Type-0 - Creative Producer and Main Character Designer

False, you forget about Hiroyuki Ito. And if anyone is going to bring back FF to its former glory, its this guy. He just been keeping to himself by working on the next project for SE (which I assume is the next main title FF)

That being said, yeah...its pretty much just those two.

wishingW3L4116d ago

compared to Amano he is nothing.

Kte4116d ago

Only he can save the FF franchise. He is the lead on FFXIII-Versus if i recall correctly.

Zechs344116d ago

Should be the lead for the whole damn company since his games are the only ones worth a damn.

LAWSON724116d ago

He is quite a champion too bad he wont finish versus anytime soon.
