Sony's 4K vs. Microsoft's Illumiroom: Which Will Reign Supreme Next-Generation?

GR's DeShaun Zollicoffer writes:

Sony is pushing 4K TVs and Microsoft just unveiled Illumiroom, a research project that will make game’s more immersive. Each could play a vital role in their company’s next-generation consoles, but which will reign supreme? Is this the PS3's Blu-ray vs the 360's HD DVD (add-on) all over again?

Why not compare it to the same tech that Sony is currently developing?

http://youtu.be/N_cKsOe7hLI

Root4117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

I didn't know Sony was doing something similar

<sigh>

You know whats going to happen now, even though Sony has been going through the same ideas before or at the same time as MS, if MS bring it out first then everyone will automaticaly say Sony is copying Microsoft. You know what people are like these days towards Sony.

Anyway I would choose the 4k experience if I had to choose but it will be a while before we all have 4k tvs in our living room since the tec is a while off.

It's like the blu ray player situation all over again, remember back in 2006 all you got was "Blu ray isn't going to take off" or "Blu ray is dead on arrival, it's going to die sooner or later". Sony seem to think too far a head entertainment wise that when it's shown off were like "That's awesome but I don't see how we're ALL going to experience that"

Halochampian4117d ago

Yet one requires you to have people dressed up in spandex in your room and have your entire room be a screen.

4117d ago
Soldierone4117d ago

@Halochampian, Sony actually demonstrated a game like MS did this year, at last years CES too. It was part of their PlayStation presentation. The camera scanned the room then "changed" everything, but he was still just playing a game.

NeverEnding19894117d ago

"You know what people are like these days towards Sony"

Uhh. Getting upset because mother-SONY is being wronged again?

You may be right with your idea though. Microsoft will take existent technology, innovate it and make it there own, and successfully market it and people WILL think that it is solely Microsoft technology.

Meanwhile, SONY will let there technology die and when you look to prove SONY did it first, people will have no idea what SONY's version is because they've never heard of it. Just like with the Eyetoy...or whatever you call that thing.

You'd think SONY would learn...

pixelsword4117d ago

If you haven't noticed, Microsoft was founded on capitalizing on other people's ideas.

Windows coming from IBM, for example.

I'm not bashing MS, but here's the lesson, Sony:

If you have an idea, go with it and dedicate yourself to it; don't wait until someone takes your idea and have you look like the one catching up.

Athonline4117d ago

4K is way better in the long run. Small monitors, laptops, etc can take advantage of it. Illumiroom sounds cool, but you need:
-A projector.
-Kinect, which means a mandatory usage of MS technology.
-Space to set it up and walls to display on.

While with 4K all you need is a monitor and a source with the supporting resolution. Because we are talking about resolution increase, companies like Samsung, LG, etc do not really have to licence anything, expect if they want to roll out 4K Blu-Ray players. ;-)

Already Samsung and other companies rolled out 4K TVs. Even Apple with Macbook Pro Retina, showed that near 4K resolution in a laptop is possible.

Full HD 1080P was in development since late 80s. I went through my dad's archive -he used to be a tech journalist from 88 to 94- some years ago and he had documented the technology, for NDA he couldn't publish much details. Why they took so much to kick off? They needed to be affordable first. Same with 4k, it is in development for a longer time than unveiled, it is expensive at the moment, but give it 4-5 years. Even 1080P was expensive 5-6 years ago.

In my University's research lab for image processing, they mainly research on higher than 4K 3D TVs at the moment. Unfortunately I am a software developer and not allowed to use them...-.-'

Lavagasm4117d ago

I like how NeverEnding said the same exact thing as pixelsword and he got 20 disagrees to pixelsword's zero.

blackbeld4117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

So Sony will take Microsoft to the court?

Same like Apple vs Samsung for years?

Hope not gonna happen.

Personal I will go for the 4K.

And for Illumiroom your living room should be dark to experience it fully.

Athonline4117d ago

@Pixelsword

Agree with you about MS. Just a small correction:
Windows don't come from IBM. Bill Gates in 1981 sold to IBM with an initial fee and licence fees per unit (a unique agreement for that time) for an OS they didn't have! After the meeting and getting the initial money, MS bought QDOS from a local programmer, edited it in IBM 's specifications and launched MS-DOS 1.0 in August 81... Now the idea for a GUI (Graphical User Interface) built on-top of MS-DOS came after Bill Gates visited Apple, where he saw both the Macintosh and Lisa projects with GUIs.
Windows 1.0 were born a few years later based on Apple's GUI, after Bill gained access to a pre-released version as he wanted to "develop software" for it.
PS: Apple stole the GUI idea from XEROX Alto and Star computers, which came from PARC, which stole the idea from NSL, etc...

Yes the computing and in extension the technology industry is built on "stolen" products. Just some companies invest more in R&D to develop/ improve a concept, like 4K which is an improvement on HD and some others invest in R&D to steal/ edit a product for re-lunch. And there are sooo many R&D original ideas that never see the light....

XB1_PS44117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

I think it's funny that @NeverEnding1989 and @pixelsword's comment are almost the same thing.

One highlighted that Sony would be letting technology die. Yet Microsoft would make it better.

The other says that Sony should make better use of technology instead of letting it die.. And Microsoft just steals everything.

The first one isn't accepted by N4g. The second is. Sony's side runs this site.

If I ended this in "I love Sony" i would get agrees, but if I ended in "I love Microsoft" I would get way less.

-Posted from my sweet, sweet Vita.

ElectricKaibutsu4117d ago

@Athonline
I don't know why people disagree with you. It's like no one ever watched Pirates of Silicon Valley :).

@sofresh412
Posted from your Vita, eh? Well then I have to agree with you.

4k TVs are definitely the future. Display resolutions will just keep getting higher and higher until people forget about such things as pixels. Still, 1080p TVs look great. If you're sitting on a couch 15 feet away from a TV I doubt you could tell the difference between a 4k TV and a 1080p TV unless they were sitting side by side. And even if it is a noticeable improvement, is anyone still wow'd by their TVs they've had for years? After I got an HD TV I got used to it in a week. It's like when you get a new computer or smartphone, you think "Wow! It's so pretty and fast!" Then a week later you just think "Load the stupid webpage you piece of crap. Why is this taking more than 2 seconds?"

When it comes to gaming, the next consoles unfortunately won't be able to take advantage of 4k. So from a gamer's only perspective Microsoft's tech is more useful because, well, you can actually use it. That technology exists right now and it's just the software they need to work on. Yeah, it's totally gimmicky, and would suck or be pointless for a lot of games, but I think for something like survival horror it could be great. Imagine shadows out of the corner of your eye? Or imagine an FPS where instead of thinking "Gah! Who's shooting me??" You think "Gah! That guy by my piano is shooting me."

Outside_ofthe_Box4117d ago

@Lavagasm

The difference between NeverEnding1989's comment and pixelsword's comment is this:

***"Uhh. Getting upset because mother-SONY is being wronged again?"***

Totally unnecessary. Also, NeverEnding1989's trolling past could have play a part as well.

knowyourstuff4116d ago

The Microsoft idea of displaying a picture outside of your tv will only work in a small number of rooms - those with a wall mounted tv and plenty of space on either side. If you have yours in a cabinet, or in a place that is well out from the wall on a stand, or the room isn't exactly square to your tv, this may not exactly work as well as when a tv is wall mounted, so I doubt this will catch on.
Also, 4K tv's will be like computer screens, with really high end resolutions you can have perfect looking anti aliasing, no pixellation that you can see with your eye, just like cameras and high end video equipment.

Syntax-Error4116d ago

MS didnt steal windows from IBM, they used IBM's money to buy it from a local programmer for $40K. It wasn't windows it was DOS. Second, Sony didn't create the WALKMAN. So don't think for a second that Sony creates all these new ideas.

Vames4116d ago

Doesn't matter who came up with the idea first, it all comes down to who got the balls to bring it to market.

Sony was testing motion long before Nintendo, but the company lacked balls and foresight and Nintendo came and stole its thunder.

Thing is, if Microsoft comes to market first with its IllumiRoom and it becomes a success, Sony is to blame and fanboys have no right to jump and moan about who copied who because no one really knows how long some companies have been working on stuff in the labs.

Lvl_up_gamer4116d ago

How do you know how long MS have been working on this tech?

Just because you see Sony working on the same principles doesn't mean they started it first.

lfclee4116d ago

Your wrong 4k is already out you mean 8k will be out in a few years time making 3d obsolete !

badz1494116d ago

all tv makers out there are going 4k and it's gonna be the industry standards sooner than we think! so...this was never MS vs Sony to begin with. flamebait much?

4116d ago
Gamer19824116d ago

4K will fail unlike blu-ray as only gaming will use it. Movies wont be in 4k for at least 6 years neither will TV be broadcast in 4k for about as long. So nobody will get 4K tvs meaning it will be pointless on PS3 or 720.

Athonline4116d ago

@ElectricKaibutsu

Just some people are closed minded, fanboys, who want to defend "their" brands... People fail to understand: Corporation invest R&D in order to launch new products, improve existing ones and get the attention of the media. All they want at the end is profit, not to innovate! The only people who wanted to innovate at the first place are either idle/part-time developers and academic stuff who does the initial research.

Pirates of the Silicon Valley was a great movie! Really underrated. Even if you didn't watch it, still the things I said are commonly mention in technology articles, IT history articles/ books and even wikipedia!

And if you ever did a Computing or Engineering degree at Uni, you will know how R&Ds work...

And because I mention MS, Apple, Sony in my posts: I am posting using my Macbook Pro which I use for software development and photo editing, but I also got a Windows tower and two virtual machines (one linux -for C/C++ programming, one Windows for gaming) on my Macbook. Moreover I own both a PS3 and a 360. No I do not favour any platform, I use multiple platforms for different things.

Back to topic:
I agree with you. 4K is the future for entertainment.

Illumiroom is great for survival horror games, but it will be extremely MS platform depending, thus developers -both audio/visual equipment and games- will more likely ignore it.

deafdani4116d ago

You know, in the end it doesn't matter who came up with an idea first. What matters to the public perception is who POPULARISED it and made it mainstream, who had the balls to go full force with an idea instead of just experimenting with it.

This is why Nintendo is given credit for the popularity of motion controls, despite Sony having experimented with it years before the Wii - and for that matter, Sega did it much, much earlier with the Activator, not to mention Nintendo's own Power Glove... but none of them matter, because it was with the Wii Remote that motion controls became succesful and mainstream.

This is why Nintendo is given credit for analog sticks, because they made it standard with the N64... but there were other companies that tried it first.

This is why Nintendo is given credit for wireless controllers, because their Wavebird was the best and most reliable of them all at the moment in the market, making it incredibly popular... despite other companies having their own wireless controllers first...

This is why Microsoft gets all the credit for the popularisation and standardisation of online gaming on consoles... despite Sega trying it much before with the Dreamcast, and heck, even Nintendo and Sega had (very primitive) online implementations with the SNES and Genesis. Not to mention PC gaming, which had online play several years before Microsoft came along with the original Xbox. But Microsoft's LIVE service was the first online service that made online play an INTEGRAL part of the console.

And this is why SONY gets massive credit for the popularisation of the blu-ray technology, because they took a MASSIVE risk making it the main format for the PS3, making it incredibly expensive to make, and they lost a lot of money per console sold for years... but in the end, it's in a BIG part thanks to them, and the PS3, that blu ray is so popular now. And if another game console uses blu ray technology, people will ALWAYS remember that Sony were the ones that made it matter.

It really looks like MS have shamelessly ripped this off, however they'll market it as something completely new that they invented and make BILLIONS $$$$$ Mwa hahahaaaaa!

Cueil4117d ago

No... it's not even remotely the same... the concept is the same, but it's about execution and Sony totally ripped off Star Trek right... I understand that people have loyalties tied up in thousands of dollars worth of hardware and software, but lets all agree that the end result is the holodeck and that we all expect to be alive when it happens.

RememberThe3574116d ago

As long as it gives Ballmer enought money to bring the Sonics back, I don't care what they steal.

Reibooi4117d ago

Personally for me I care more about 4k. While granted it's a bit early to be talking about it being widely used(I honestly doubt the next gen will use it and would very surprised if it does) it seems so much more impressive to me.

Sure there is a certain novelty to something like this Illumiroom and the Sony made version that they have been working on but at the end of the day it still feels like a gimmick. It's like how 3D is. Yeah it's cool and all but it really doesn't add anything. Whereas 4K can genuinely allow for more detail, realism and immersion to a certain extent.

Anon19744117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

It's a ways off to be talking about affordable 4k yet, but it makes sense given the time frame we're talking here. If the PS4 launches in 2014 and is anticipated to last 10 years, who knows what TV's will be available in 2020. Might as well build support in.

The illumiroom idea I think is a cool feature, but not extremely practical. I use a 1080p projector in my man-cave for gaming and it's fantastic! If you have a projector why would you use it for effects around a TV? Kinda defeats the purpose of having a projector setup.

At the moment I'm not really interested in either of these. I'm waiting for the 3d projectors to drop down in price and improve in quality.

TheGamerDood4117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

The problem with 4K at the moment is the lack of content and it's going to take years for content providers to catch up to the new tech. DirecTV currently streams in 1080i not even 1080p. pfft! :/

Tr10wn4117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

There is no way the next gen of console will use 4K TV no one will pay $20,000 for a TV and that's the cheapest one from Samsung the Sony one will cost $25,000 and thats leaving the fact that a single movie in 4K is around 160GB so you will need what for a game? 8 blu rays disc?

@darkride66
"The illumiroom idea I think is a cool feature, but not extremely practical. I use a 1080p projector"

They are making this around a TV not a projector, i know what you mean but MS think big and honestly not many people use projectors now day they are focused more on the main stream.

Seraphemz4117d ago

@thegamerdood - I get 1080p on my direct tv...dont know what you have though.

TheGamerDood4117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

I was right damn it! You people owe me an apology! :P

"There are no 1080p broadcast channels, as Jimmie says the only 1080p is some PPV movies. All other HD is either 720p or 1080i. If you have a 1080p TV, all signals are converted to 1080p for display.

And as Jimmie mentions the format for the 1080p PPV is 1080p/24. Your TV might not be compatible with that format. If not, then just use 1080i. The picture quality will be the same."

http://forums.directv.com/p...

@Bigpappy

That sh*t won't be at E3. lol It could take years for Sony since they're trying to do that full immersion sh*t. MS on the other hand might debut it this year but again look at the quality of the tech it looks mad sketchy and no where near the level of detail that Sony has.

Seraphemz4117d ago

Gamerdood - as I stated in the PM

1.) Direct TV doesnt control what TV stations broadcast in...so its not their fault.

2.) Your comment stated "DirecTV currently streams in 1080i not even 1080p. pfft! :/ " STREAMS...and they DO STREAM in 1080p.

And as I showed you, they do STREAM in 1080p. PPV and VOD full 1080p...

fei-hung4117d ago

headline is bullcrap anyway.

Sony tech is ready and out there. Almost evey cinema I go to uses Sony 4k Digital projection on a screen or another.

4K TV's will very soon be on shop shelves if they aren't already.

MS's tech is in very early development stage and as the article tells us, they are doing research into still.Considering most people are banking for MS and Sony to release their next gen consoles this year, do we really think MS will take this project from research and early prototype stage into full release and produtcion.

Tr10wn4116d ago

$20,000 is the cheapest go get them boy! oh and btw i dont know if you know but those 4K cinemas use upscaling resolution and they are no way near the real deal that is 4K, a single movie in 4K is 160gb, 4K isnt ready for market and there is still alot to be done before its marketable just think about it a movie is around the 160gb, now what about a game? 340gb for a Triple A game? count those blu rays or get ready to spent another $1000 on HDD only.

The tech is ready and in the future will be a reality but there is no use to it right now because is too expensive.

fei-hung4116d ago

@Tr10wn

I was going to write a lengthy reponse to break things down word for word, but since you completely missed the point, which was very simple, I won't bother.

UnholyLight4117d ago

I hate how everyone is jumping on the bandwagon of "Will 4k fail?". People claim dead on arrival but come on do we really know for sure? Just like Plasma/LCD/LED/OLED etc as our knowledge continues to grow 4k WILL be a reality and will become more affordable just like the stuff I mentioned above did. People are just broken records it seems and love to say that something will not work, when in reality, it will eventually begin to take over what we consider normal in the living room at this time.

And the way people in spandex are moving things around for him, although the price of those spandex people must be a bit costly. I'm not sure how many spandex people I'll need in my room, probably quite a few.

You're right, that's the future right there. Spandex People Technology™.

nukeitall4116d ago

The thing is, with MS showing they did it with a low cost Kinect and a project (those LED projects can be had cheaply these days).

However, Sony's implementation seems cool, but doesn't seem intended for production use i.e. costly setup. Looks cool, but likely not practical.

It's like when Kinect was released it was (and probably still is) the only motion capture system in it's price range. Sure there are many much better, but there price tag is astronomical in comparison.

These large companies like MS and Sony (less Nintendo) has the money to do all these things, but it is all about management being able to plan, execute and make a product people are willing to buy. That is key!

fatstarr4116d ago

bunfighterii4116d ago (Edited 4116d ago )

Sony already announced a 4K content service, and 4K bluray releases for later this year at CES. 4K is simply what HD was 10 years ago and what Full HD was 5-6 years ago. They were big, expensive and everyone was saying 'Why do I need HD and Bluray/HD DVD when I've got DVD'.

My parents only recently replaced the first HD Plasma TV they bought in 2004. It's a Pioneer, and at the time it cost around $15,000. It still gets used at their beach house now.

Sony etc are already talking about sub-$10,000 4K sets. Mark my words, it'll catch on before you know it and in 2 years 4K sets will be under $5,000 snd there'll be much more content floating around.

This 4K push only strengthens recent rumours that PS4 will support 4K too IMO. My guess though is for movies, not games. Sony said themselves at CES there are BluRay discs that can accommodate 4k content. PS4 will probably have some kind of updated BluRay drive that supports newer, higher capacity 4k discs.

nukeitall4116d ago (Edited 4116d ago )

I don't think 4K will really catch on any time soon, and when it does your console won't be able to output anything near that quality. PCs? sure!

4K is way into the future, especially when HD is just going mainstream. Let me repeat that, *JUST*.

Who knows, it might even be the DVD vs BR again. Meaning the jump in quality wasn't enough for people to rush out and upgrade, so instead the technology just simply fell in price until the difference was negligible and it became the standard.

And for projecting the game world in your room that is daft in my eyes it's just too chaotic and it's all visual instead of immersion.

WiiU/PS4 ect will support Full 1080p Natively on all games in the future so will 720 ect but in say 5 years or more there should be an upgrade so you can also run games in 4k if required ie same games but at 4k not another generation of consoles as i think they will stretch this one out for at least 10 years or more so they can max them out.

The illumiroom is a massive gimmick that doesn't look like it adds anything. It is like projecting on anywall with stuff on the wall it looks out of place and cheap. There is a reason why projections need a white screen/background to project on.

The marketing video for it isn't even that good (considering the marketing video for the then called project natal which promised a lot and show new flashy things)

This doesn't mean I think 4K is the better option and I personally see it a waste of resources especially when TV services can't support it because they can't broadcast it (technology is way off) so why is a consumer going to buy it if they can't watch normal 4K tv.

Answer both are not

EddieNX 4117d ago

It's not gunna be Native 4K video games. To render their games in 4K they will have to sacrifice a ridiculous amount of fidelity. So the 4K will just be some useless , Poser , Bluray upscaling or some shite....

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple1015d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref4d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde4d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander19724d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville4d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff21834d ago

Zeref

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Profchaos3d ago

They are not trying this team is established for forward compatability the team is. It interested in preserving Xbox or 360 games.

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref4d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan4d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis0073d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander19725d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Zeref4d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde4d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander19724d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander19724d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier4d ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto4d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff21834d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Tacoboto3d ago

How do Sony and Nintendo feel about these discs from 2001-2013?

Don't be stupid, you know Xbox is the best at this today.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts4d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts3d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic3d ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.

You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long13d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197213d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic13d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

DivineHand12514d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91314d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer14d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91313d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit13d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6913d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit13d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher14d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken14d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197213d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic13d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2314d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218313d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder14d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.

Could Xbox Soon Become The Next Dreamcast?

Microsoft's future in the video game space is murky right now, so let's break it all down.

thegamer.com
ApocalypseShadow17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Not anytime soon. But they're on that path.

One thing not mentioned in the article is Microsoft's money bags. If Sega had Microsoft's money, they would have still been around as a hardware manufacturer. Xbox as a platform only survives because of the money bags. They can continue making consoles for the core and port to PC.

The multiplatform strategy is only the result of arrogance and misguided leadership that blew up in their face. They thought gamers would jump on Xbox in droves if they knew that many of their favorite games would be only on Xbox. But that's not happening at all. Sales didn't increase. They decreased. Why? Because the dumb asses thought giving away these expensively made games in a cheap service would also turn the tide.

Gamers on other platforms are willing to buy quality. They don't need to be handed nearly free games in a service that aren't even finished and sometimes average in their development. Gamers buy Nintendo games. They buy Sony games. Microsoft groomed their base to not buy games. Even the quality ones. It has always been their plan to go digital. But most gamers still like single player gaming. Still like physical releases.

Microsoft's problem has always been that they don't produce high quality games at the same output as Nintendo and Sony. Actually, they should be producing quite a lot more because they're worth over 2 TRILLION. How they don't have more is ridiculous and no excuse. Buying publishers to take away from competition only backfired. Because it still takes millions of dollars to continue to make those games from the publishers they snatched. Their only choice was to crawl back to their competitors to help sustain those developers because Nintendo and Sony platforms were the ones buying games.

Am I sorry for Microsoft? Hell no! They deserved last place for putting in the least effort. They deserved the fallout for buying up the industry and didn't make a single blip on the radar against their competitors where they now need those same gamers they took away games from to support them. Part of it may have been to cash in on their competition. But the result is the slow death of their platform. They may go 3rd party. They may keep making hardware. I don't give a shit about them to worry about it. I only give a shit about the destructive nature of their industry moves that only negatively affect gamers. They could sell and drop out of the industry and I wouldn't blink. Probably laugh. But not blink. They deserve whatever comes to them. At least Sega put in the effort when it came to games. They just had poor leadership. Microsoft has poor leadership and barely makes memorable games. That's a killer combination. And not in a good way.

Cacabunga16d ago

That would be an insult to Dreamcast.. it had a crazy line up of legendary critically acclaimed games.

Crows9016d ago

I was thinking the same. Dreamcast had incredible games in such a short amount of time. It was truly exceptional.

darthv7216d ago

...and yet all those great games were not enough to sway people from the looming release of the PS2 at the time. Sony just has that kind of brand loyalty.

Cacabunga16d ago

Darth

I do not agree.. Sony had even better games thanks to an unprecedented 3rd party support..
DC had amazing lineup but 90% were arcade games..

88316d ago

@darth:
And Sony showed off "The Emotion Engine" and their real time demos that made everyone think they would miss out on REAL next gen 128bit magic if they jumped in before PS2s polygon pushing monster (and early lack of anti-aliasing with a healthy heap of shimmer + DVD playback) stepped up. PS2 was a fantastic system though with amazing games.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 16d ago
blacktiger16d ago

That's not true. Just because Microsoft has the money doesn't mean Microsoft can allow xbox to bleed entire Microsoft money. It doesn't work like they. Also SEC will be watching and investor won't allow it. Lot of reasons why Microsoft can not continue even if they wanted to. SEC regulations is expensive.

fr0sty16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

Exactly this... Microsoft is a publicly traded company, mostly owned by their shareholders (Approximately 59.24% of the company's stock is owned by Institutional Investors, 7.73% is owned by Insiders and 33.03% is owned by Public Companies and Individual Investors.). Their shareholders call the shots on the business decisions, and their shareholders want one thing and one thing only, for their stock price to go up. Losses do not make stock prices go up... so if the division continually posts losses on hardware, but shows profits on software and services (which has been the case with Xbox its entire lifespan, for over 20 years now), the shareholders are going to grow impatient and demand they stop making hardware and focus on the only thing that has ever made them money, software and services.

When Microsoft bought Blizzard and Activision for almost 100 billion, I knew that was the nail in the coffin for Xbox as a console... as the shareholders were going to expect a quick return on that investment, and when it didn't materialize, they were going to be out for blood... out to force Xbox to sell those games on as many consoles as possible, "and while you're at it, sell those first party exclusives that aren't selling well on other consoles as well... hell, just stop making consoles and sell games."

If there is another Xbox console generation, it will definitely be the last, but I doubt there even will be one at this point. I think the Xbox division planning on it just in case, but I don't think the project has been greenlit from Microsoft itself. The rumors that they have not yet even secured the chips needed from the chip fabrication facilities ties into this.

shinoff218316d ago

While I usually agree with you . Alot of what was said can just also be asked before any of that.

How long will the shareholders wait? It doesn't appear long at all

Babadook715d ago

I think I get your point. Like just because MS has money does not mean they are content to throw it away on a dying ecosystem. Xbox has to be profitable or “what’s the point?”

ifinitygamer16d ago

Money bags, yes, but are we ignoring that Xbox actually makes a profit on games and GamePass? Hardware is often a loss leader, and they're probably making profit 4 years into the life cycle, but games and services revenue have been very profitable while other parts of Microsoft's business is struggling. Say what you will about the quality of those games, of course, but this is kind of a reverse Dreamcast situation, where the console was dragging down the company and put it at risk of shuttering entirely. Killing that console saved the business and allowed it to continue to make games on multiple platforms. In this case, the service is very profitable, as are the games, and they're also double-dipping into Multiplatform to extend this further, while their hardware is just sort of what they believe to be the best for gamers and their own titles (whether that is the case or not...)

fr0sty16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

The issue is, they aren't selling enough hardware to make their exclusives profitable, and now that they've bought half the gaming publisher/dev industry, they have no choice but to go third party to make a profit... and that is making their shareholders take a real close look at their hardware division under the microscope... why keep making the hardware if the software is all that is making them money, and they continually, generation after generation come in dead last with hardware sales?

Look at a game like Spiderman 2... if it had been an Xbox exclusive, with the amount it cost to develop, it would have been a huge failure... simply not enough consoles out there to sell it on. They would have been lucky to break even.

ifinitygamer16d ago

@fr0sty agreed completely, which is why they're hedging by releasing other games to multiplatform, plus they have PC to make up for the difference in a lot of ways, which is why their games are not complete money pits. It brings up the question of whether or not those exclusives would drive sales of consoles, though. Let's say Spiderman 2 was an Xbox exclusive, it would certainly have pushed console sales, though who's to say how much is anyone's guess.

fr0sty16d ago

That's why you can't rely on just one exclusive, Sony has always delivered on a wide range of solid exclusives, even this generation (even if they haven't been strong on the first party exclusives, they've made up for it with third party). They don't rely on just one "system seller", they have a portfolio of them.

16d ago
JBlaze22616d ago

ApocalypseShadow To be honest Sony has more of a chance to go 3rd party because like you said Microsoft has money, Sony does not. Sony does not have games, Only games they have come from 3rd party. Sony has been losing money for years and you. Saying Microsoft has been putting the least effort just proves you have no idea what's been going on. All Sony has done is repeat and recycle, never innovating or doing something new. All Sony has is brand loyalty nothing else and it shows.

Not sure about that. It's been two decades and I still think about Power Stone, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Seaman and others, but I'm not sure I'll remember Xbox Series X/S games in a few years from now... Maybe I'll remember about the franchises that the Xbox brand spawned, but I don't believe that the Xbox Series lives up to the late Dreamcast or even to the Xbox name itself. I do have great memories about the 360 with Blue Dragon, Gears 2 and Lost Odyssey though

isarai17d ago

Nah, sega actually makes good games

Becuzisaid16d ago

No, Dreamcast was ahead of it's time and most still have very fond memories of it that had one. It also had some good games on it even in it's short lifespan. Xbox has none of these qualities.

Profchaos16d ago

I remember it coming out at the time in a really bad place they hit the market before the PS2 but it was during this transitional time when Sony was promoting the power of the PS2 and so many of the Dreamcast games were awesome but often third parties simply ported the PS1 version increased resolution and performance but rarely fully utilise the capabilities of the console.

I think in the end bad marketing done it in and like the GameCube so many people are fond of it now but at the time it was looked at in the lense of the day and it didn't stack up.

Personally I miss Sega in hardware they took risks that many companies won't

Becuzisaid16d ago

I never owned it, and got the PS2 right when it launched. But there were certain games it had that I was always jealous of that I didn't have access to - Sonic adventure, crazy taxi, power Stone, code Veronica, shenmue, skies of Arcadia. I always thought it was a really cool machine though. I've never heard a bad thing about it though from those that had it.

FinalFantasyFanatic16d ago

I only ever saw one Dreamcast, and that was one my friend owned, pity I never got to play it, I wonder what games he had for it?

It would be nice if some of those games got ported to modern systems.

Profchaos16d ago

Oh man sonic adventure on the Dreamcast made me so jealous as a huge sonic fan on the mega drive who also moved to PlayStation 2 I never got the chance to play it back in the day either. The Dreamcast in Australia where I am was always relegated to the smallest corner of EB Games it was kind of a strong first indicator that things were not going well at the time.
