CES 2013: Kaz Hirai Responds To PlayStation 4 Inquires

Sony President and CEO Kaz Hirai couldn’t avoid the inevitable PS4 question raised during a Q&A segment after his CES press conference.

“We’re very happy with the way that the PlayStation 3 has grown over the years. Obviously a lot of interaction with the PlayStation Vita as well,” Hirai stated. ”All of the gaming fans out there, you probably know that we don’t talk about future generation technologies until we’re ready to launch it in a big way.”

I'm still hoping for a bit of info before E3.

iamnsuperman4116d ago (Edited 4116d ago )

So what he has said is wait until we reveal the console (i.e whenever we think we are ready to) before asking that question as we never talk about future products

Pretty standard answer really and I was expecting that

bobshi4115d ago

Indeed. It wasn't like he was going to say 'oh crap, did I forget to mention that on stage? We have a PS4 out this fall.'

irepbtown4115d ago

I'm sure most people knew we'd get no info this early. I'm sure we'll here about the PS4 (whether that's official announcement/reveal or a small bit of confirmed info) this year, but my bet is a 2014 release.

MikeMyers4115d ago

Talk about front page news! No news, nothing. Yet it's on the top page at 910 degrees Fahrenheit.

Kevin ButIer4115d ago (Edited 4115d ago )

Solid answer, it's better than the usual: PS3 is a 10 year lifespan console so .... you know the rest

ZigZagZach4115d ago

It's a definite confirm though for the PS4, which is good enough.

SAE4116d ago

This means that they are planning to release the ps4 very soon from the announcement ..

kneon4115d ago

Which makes TGS a better option for the announcement as I would expect a fall release.

But if they leave the announcement too close to the release date then it's almost impossible to prevent leaks since product will already be shipping to distributors.

tigertron4115d ago

Translation="Wait until E3, where we can make big waves!"

sarshelyam4115d ago

Not likely...there are far too many announcement at E3 for Sony to risk getting lost in the shuffle, drowned out by rival announcements and big software. I'm betting on an earlier announce, much like the Vita!

Calm Down Sunshine4115d ago (Edited 4115d ago )

"far too many announcement at E3 for Sony to risk getting lost in the shuffle"

What is this I don't even...

The only announcement that a rival (Microsoft, as Nintendo have already played their hand) could make is the next Xbox.. And that would, at best and most likely, be on par with a PS4 announcement. It would realistically be Nintendo being "lost in the shuffle" if the next xbox/playstation were announced at E3.

TheGamerDood4115d ago

"we don’t talk about future generation technologies"

So his response is no response :| another worthless article.

knifefight4115d ago

Games Journalism: So Awesome.

Abdou234115d ago

So, he basically said nothing.

GraveLord4115d ago

Ouya - Android based console. Very cheap, offers lots of free games...etc.

Nvidia's Project Shield - Android based home portable Android based console. Has HDMI inputs so it can be used as a console and also has the ability to play your PC games from your Desktop.

Wii U - An HD Wii. Supports Wiimotes as well as the new Gamepad tablet-like control. You don't even need a TV to play most Wii U games.

Why did I list all of these things? These are all products that are launching well before PS4. Sony is taking too long in releasing the PS4 and since we still don't know a thing about it, it's probably very very far away. I expect all of the above systems I listed to be successful in their own way due to this console cycle running too long.

TO MICROSOFT AND SONY: Stop milking PS3/360. It is time for new consoles. My PS3 keeps freezing with Black Ops 2. I'm pretty sure this is due to the console being pushed to its limits and rushed yearly releases that aren't optimized properly.

hardcorehippiez4115d ago

call of duty black ops 2 pushing the ps3 to the limits ? are you serious ?

Hanuman4115d ago

The PS3 can be pushed to it's limits in many ways. It doesn't necessarily mean that it has to look great.

TKCMuzzer4115d ago

Black Ops 2 freezes because the network code is half arced. Mine only ever freezes playing it online. The PS3 is not being pushed, it's just like many CODs, their not quite finished until patch number 1.9 or something.

DragonKnight4115d ago

Ouya: Will play crappy android games no one will think twice about. Will very likely fail its first year.

nVidia's Shield: Not a threat to anything or anyone because you need to have a specific graphic card to be able to use it effectively, and when was the last time you knew the PC crowd to be bogged down by such restrictions? Especially when it will not have the same adaptability as a PC. Will not be able to compete with 3DS or Vita.

Wii U: Completely irrelevant. Third party support is pretty much nil at this moment and not looking to improve. More devs are coming forward saying it's too weak.

Sony and MS don't have to bring out a new console any time soon. Your console is freezing because it needs to be cleaned and taken care of, BLOPS 2 pushes nothing.

ado9084115d ago

@Gravelord Black Ops 2 is not pushing the PS3 to its limits. I don't know where you came up with such a conclusion.

@Hanuman There is not one game that is pushing the console to its limits. Certainly not Black ops 2. The game has no scale and the graphics look pure crap to most games. If Black Ops 2 is pushing the system to it's scale then games like Killzone 3 and Battlefield 3 wouldn't even exist on it. And Those are only shooters. there are much bigger games.

@TKCMuzzer I agree. It has everything to do with the games network coding. These people are actually confusing themselves. Online lag is not gameplay performance. It's the matter of your connectivity that users from both PS3 and Xbox 360 are experiencing. Don't blame the system blame the developers.

Don't worry it will bleed into the internet before E3. Just gotta find it.

AMD has announced its AMD Richland/Kaveri APUs. Richland launching in First half of 2013 and Kaveri in 2nd half of 2013. Features facial tracking and gesture recognition software. That is a good hint I believe. Richland is 32nm and Kaveri is 28nm. Notably first rumors of XB3 and PS4 were of their CPUs being 32nm for XB3 and 28nm for PS4.

Take a look at Gesture controls in action.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4115d ago (Edited 4115d ago )

I bet he will go home and play ps4 after CES.

yeahokchief4115d ago

I am hoping the media shuts up about ps4 and xbox 720 and i know a lot of my friends are as well. We are happy with our PS3s.

I still have roughly a dozen ps3 games to play not to mention around 30 or so games where I can go back for trophies.

Please enough about ps4 until next year. use your brain and write some actual good articles about video games instead of using next gen for hits.

Come on folks! PLAYSTATION 4 "INQUIRES"?

Isn't it "query"? or at least "inquiries"?

GOD and I haven't read any of it yet!!

SnakeCQC4116d ago

no one asked about block on used games?

Robotronfiend4115d ago

Retailers won't stock a console that prevents used game sales.

insomnium24115d ago

Ummm..ofc they will. Maybe not all (0.00000001%) of them but most will.

MmaFan-Qc4115d ago (Edited 4115d ago )

by "retailers" you mean buisness who make their money with used games?

sorry but thats not the only place you can buy stuff.

btw, were's the complain about the fact that most pc games cant be traded and played as "used game"?

did the world ended when i was fully aware that my STEAM games(digital and retail with steamwork support) couldnt be traded? NOPE.

i dont want to see the ps4 preventing used games to be played...but cmon, dont be ridiculous.

EffectO4116d ago

People are so stupid sometimes, they should've asked him about ORBIS.

and used games too

Please do not put Destiny’s monetization into Sony’s first party games. The monetization is what’s driving players away from Destiny.

just_looken11d ago

The new temp boss is the sony cfo bean counter so i can see this being a thing get every penny.

Cacabunga11d ago

PlayStation officially losing it.. fans will never support gaas games

just_looken11d ago

@car

The new boss did a interview in japan he wants to tap into the mobile market like nintendio so he give 0 fucks about gamers/fans

https://www.pushsquare.com/...

Redemption-6411d ago

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long11d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197211d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic11d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

DivineHand12511d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91311d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer11d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91310d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit10d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

Christopher11d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6910d ago (Edited 10d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit10d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher11d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken11d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197211d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic11d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2311d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218311d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder11d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.

Sony May Soon Let You Decide How Much NPCs Talk In Games

Sony has patented to add multiple dialogue modes to let players switch between how many conversations with NPCs they want in the game.

Sounds like patent trolling they tried the same thing against Nintendo with the same pattern.

Motion and control input traversing over higher and lower frequencies seperate from each other allowing the controller to do both

So to recoup the money Genuine is going to take on Nintendo or Microsoft next. I hate patent lawyers they are some of the worst bottom feeders out there.
