Report: PS4 Announcement Not Coming in February, Sigh

“Report” is a lovely word for journalists – it’s basically used the same way as “rumor”, but it sounds more credible, leading to more ever-important clicks due to the power of a misleading title. Today, games journalists have decided to use it again to speculate that the PS4 will be announced in February. While there’s always the possibility that it may be announced next month (a very slim one, as we explain below), the reasoning behind the claim is utterly, horrifically and embarrassingly flawed. Unfortunately, the rumor is starting to spread, infecting unfortunate readers who are being lied to. So it’s time to squash it.

You think that by insulting other websites, that makes you a good journalist? Do you think smeering other website makes you a good journalist? (I didn't like what Expert Reviews said either btw) As a consumer of media and someone who reads a lot about games, I'm less inclined to read about your childish bickering about other websites. If I want to hear about gossip then I'll watch the Jersey Shore.

Rumors are a part of the profession of journalism, regardless if you like them or not. Hell ESPN's SportsCenter is 90% based off of opinion, banter and what if's, yet people still consume it like it's going out of style. And they openly sell it like it's genuine journalism. Why? Because that is what journalism has become. Mainstream media and the 24-hour news cycle are the ones responsible for the habit of perpetuating rumors and promoting speculation. It's the way it is, deal with it, because what you're talking about is exactly what this profession has become.

These rumors have been killing me today. A sad result of sites grasping at any straws they can to get hits during this time, misrepresenting information which then spreads unchecked across the internet like a California wildfire.

During this time? They've been doing that this whole generation. Nowadays there seems to be no reason to do fact checking, when all you seem to have to do is put rumor in the title, or assert your theory as fact by posting the most innocuous of related things.

A PS4 announcement is whole new event of its own. And rightfully so.

The last Destination PlayStation was in 2009. I remember the PSP Jak and Daxter game being leaked.

It could be for retailers to judge how much space they will give to playstation products. PS4 could be mentioned and some software could be shown just for them to decide how much space they need to give.

They have 3DS, Wii, Wii U, 360, PC, Vita, PS3 and 2 new consoles to have space for.

It's that, but mostly consists of business meetings and forecasts discussions to help the retailers prepare for what's coming, and for them to make deals on how much they will support the product.

The PR for something like this is much different than you'd see for the consumer, as those retailers care about verifiable facts and market analysis.

As long as ps4 is announced this year, ill be a very happy gamer. I remember way back in 99 I think it was when I saw the first screenshots of ps2 graphics. I was in total awe and couldn't wait for it to come out.

I personally think Sony will announce the PS4 during E3 2013 because it is the biggest gaming conference so it only makes sense. Why would Sony want to announce a new console during a show/conference that is not very popular and is not attended by the press. Plus, if they announce at PSD, then their press conference at E3 wouldn't be the best it could be. Sony wouldn't want Microsoft to get all the attention. Another possibly would be to show tech demos or upcoming next-gen game trailers during a independent press conference (to build hype) leading to E3.

All those saying PS4 won't launch until 2014.....your probably right, but I believe the PSOrbis will release by Xmas 2013...Yep, PS Orbis this year is my prediction, & I think Sony need to get the jump on MS's next machine.
Sony releasing the PSOrbis/4 at the mid point or end of 2014 would be far to damaging to them, I believe.
If MS decide to release in 2014, as is being speculated, & they decide to go ALL OUT in terms of specs, well, Sony isn't going to be able to afford to take the hits on initial sales that MS can afford. MS can for 2 reasons, they have masses of money & are not losing any thanks to Windows being such a widespread disease, & also, MS are charging people for there online service, & obviously many retarded MS fanboys think it is worth it. In contrast to that, Sony are not only offering there service FREE (free meaning they make NO money from allowing us to play games, download demos, etc, etc, the only money making area for them is the store). So, now Sony have to either leave there online service free, which I fail to see how they can afford to do, or do the almost impossible of convincing people that there service has jumped up in quality enough to warrant going from a free service to a charged one. And salesman will agree that start something off at a very low price (or free in this case), & then changing the price to take it upwards is an extremely tough sell (especially in our current economical state).

So, given the work Sony needs to do to gain back those 100 million numbers that Wii & 360 stole, they will need to roll out PSOrbis with a nice headstart on 720, & also not giving Wii-U anymore lead than it has to, they need to get it out the door this year with specs as high as possible & a $399 max price, then they need to show a improved online service that includes all the things MS fanboys whine about, (that aren't neccessary for gaming), like cross game chat & little useless features like that......and it needs to somehow still be linked to the current PSN Store & ultimately allow us to download ALL the content we already have on PSP, PSVita & PS3, yep all the minis, PsOne, Ps2 & movies, so we don't have to pay for them again. For me, being able to re-download Oddworld Strangers Wrath, or Wipeout, or any other game I've already bought on the PS3 store onto my new PSOrbis & play it on there, would be the next best thing to FULL PS3 b/c. Now imagine both, being able to reget all your digital content you bought on PS3, as well as play all your hardcopy PS3 games on PS Orbis & your on your way to the best machine I could dream of.
The rest is simple mathamatics, as only Sony knows what they can afford to put in, but the fact is that PS Orbis will be a lot more powerful than current gen. & I include Wii-U in that, so we will be duly impressed with it's power & games....
That in turn will put pressure on MS to get there machine on shelves which means, MS will be rushed & won't be able to include everything they wish to (as parts will be more expensive), & also we all know what happend the last time MS rushed a machine onto the market......a over 3 yr faulty hardware plague is what.
So give me my motherf$#king PS Orbis now Sony....I'm ready.

we know that if TLOU and BEYOND r ps3 title they need at least 4 or 5 months to sell something good

Since Dreamcast, there has never been a console launched in America during the middle of the year.....it's ALWAYS during the holiday'ish season(Sept - DEC).

Launching a console during the middle of the year is rather pointless and lackluster.
So we're looking at either holiday 2013 or holiday 2014.
