Zelda HD Experience is the Perfect Style for a New Game

GenGAME writes: "I remember reading about the famous GameCube tech demo from SpaceWorld 2000 that depicted an epic clash between Link and Ganondorf, styled after the artwork of Ocarina of Time, but with a much more faithful graphical execution. It was the world’s first real glimpse at GameCube – at what it could achieve on a visual level. Everyone was excited, and wanted to see this new Zelda take shape.

"Fast-forward to 2011, and Nintendo’s just debuted their new Wii U home system, and yet again they call upon Zelda as the forerunner of what the system can do graphically speaking. A new tech demo – the Zelda HD Experience – gives the world the first official look at Link in glorious HD, and after a spectacular reception, people’s expectations for the next Zelda game are higher than ever yet again.

"With so much excitement built up, can Nintendo really afford not to deliver on the hype they’ve created?"

Whatever they choose I'm sure will be acceptable to me. However, if they don't use a style at least very similar to the tech-demo, I will be VERY disappointed. How could they show that off, then go in another direction?

As for the idea that we don't want 'realistic' so much as we want 'High Fantasy', that is a great point. I think the writer put well into words what many Zelda fans have been feeling.

Windwaker HD re-release in late 2013 (with a few new side quests) while we wait, and Zelda U in first quarter 2015 if not Holiday 2014, and I'm personally a happy camper.

PopRocks3594120d ago

I'm sure a lot of people asked the same thing about the tech demo that eventually turned into Wind Waker.

TruthbeTold4120d ago

True. Yet as popular and as many die-hard WW fans there are out there, even to this day, a large amount of people amongst Zelda fans are upset by the choice, and detest that art style, so the question stands.

MeatAbstract4120d ago

I haven't met any Zelda fans that detested the art style of Wind Waker. It proved everyone wrong when it finally came out by being amazing. The only criticisms I've heard for WW are that it was a little on the easy side and I personally think those people are clutching at straws.

Should also not that because of WW art style, the game as aged well and still looks good to this day. Any art style they go with will be fine because regardless, it's the same Zelda formula again

TruthbeTold4120d ago (Edited 4120d ago )

MeatAbstract, I agree that the game was great. Can't agree that the art style won over the detractors though. A lot of people won't even play the DS hand held games because they use the same art style, and they don't want to support that choice by Nintendo. I liked it for what it was, and replay the game periodically, because it was so good. I personally prefer the strive for the 'Lord of the rings/Ultra Fantasy' type of look/atmosphere that the article spoke of though. To each his own I guess.

@PopRocks359

yeap, I remember seeing the tech demo back then and the reality that was Wind Waker. The interwebs was arife with people slamming the living daylights out of Nintendo at the time.

That tech demo eventually became Twilight Princess though I think.

--Onilink--4120d ago

@TruthbeTold

most people wont play the DS games because they are touch only. The art style was never much of a problem. Even though it obviously didnt look as good on the DS

animegamingnerd4120d ago

though to be fair wind waker is a fantastic game

PopRocks3594120d ago

Dudes, I love Wind Waker. Love it to death. I'm just saying for those expecting the Wii U Zelda tech demo to look the same when it becomes a real game, you probably shouldn't. Nintendo is known for radically changing art styles from tech demo to final product.

Wind Waker tech demo = next generation Ocarina of Time

Zelda Wii U tech demo = next generation Twilight Princess

I don't know. It just makes sense to me.

I want something unlike what we've seen before.

In my opinion, Wind Waker is still one of the best looking games of all time.

Heavy stylization adds to the experience.

Even the more "realistic" Twilight Princess had a really cool, dark style.

Something new is all I ask.

They tend to do that anyway.

dark-hollow4120d ago

Seriously just give it a resolution bump and some AA and it will pass as a current gen game. http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Wind waker, okami and journey are solid evidence that great art direction is as important is how raw graphical power.

XXXL4120d ago

Would love for them to use the graphic style from the tech demo. I really disliked skyward swords graphics.

LOL_WUT4120d ago

They would be able to show off what the console is capable of, IF they go with the tech demo route. ;)

Why do I get the feeling you wouldn't care either which way?

Honestly I really changed my mind on Fi with the remaster because they didn't make her interrupt your gameplay every 5 seconds, that drastically changed my views on her

Inverno71d ago

Technically she's in ToTK but obviously can't take any other form than the sword she was made into. Also the companion feature has been done plenty of times in Zelda, I don't think it'll add anything new. If anything should be brought back it should be the Minish.

Directionless Modern Zelda Should Return to its 3D Roots

Matt from We Game Daily writes "The Legend of Zelda series has gone in a different direction. One which, try as I have, I just can’t get on board with. Here is why I think Zelda should return to its 3D roots."

Amen! A good, tight, Zelda game with a focus on dungeons and puzzles. Let people have the new style Zelda if you gotta, but let us have the OoT style games too. That's not without precedent either, the handheld 2D Zelda's in the style of A Link to the Past etc have coexisted alongside the 3D Zelda's before

FinalFantasyFanatic102d ago

As much as I like BoTW, TotK, I need my traditional Zelda games as well, I could not endlessly play the open world Zelda games, plus it's harder to keep those fresher than the traditional games.

Eidolon102d ago (Edited 102d ago )

BotW was just as fresh to the franchise as OoT was. TokT was great but the next LoZ would have to move from that formula to be fresh again. There's only so much they can do with the hardware. I think they focused too much on making the world big instead impactful. I felt the world was sort of empty and repetitive in TotK, sure there was a lot to do but no more difference a Ubisoft game..

anast102d ago

I wouldn't worry too much. Nintendo knows what they are doing.

Ristul102d ago

Wind Waker had a perfect balance of open world and a cool, well hand-crafted design. Maybe try to keep the open world but put in effort to make more memorable story driven quests and locations.

Zelda Fan Brings Godzilla to Life in Tears of the Kingdom

A fan of The Legend of Zelda has recreated the iconic Japanese monster Godzilla in Tears of the Kingdom using the game's Zonai devices.

Knightofelemia140d ago

I like it would also be cool if some created Dragon Caesar in the game I would love to watch the two going at it.
