Kickstarter, and other crowd source funding programs have opened the flood gates for independents in every industry. None more so than gaming. It is a paradigm shift that has brought a Ouya to our attention. It is the first console created with funding from gamers. Using an Android platform that is desperate for a herald to lead the charge of open source os development. Welcome to the open source generation gamers. This is only the beginning.

Well for one, wacky games like MindCraft might appear on it and be a huge hit.

That said, I'm not buying it and indie games has a history of being mostly turds. Even when there are some really high quality indie games, I still tend to pick the big AAA games.

In short, it is my personal preference, but there are plenty of people that love those wacky (and great) indie games. They are just not for me.

I'm not all about power and graphics , but the Ouya is litteraly 2 underpowered. It runs a tegra 3 chip. Which is basically a PoS in a console.

It's not even half as powerfull as a 360 or ps3.
The wiiu has it's gamepad and a powerfull GPGPU.

The ouya is a mobile phone in a box. I hope all these kickstarters vanish and let the big three do what they do.

i honestly think id rather get a apple tv or cable (cheaper) if i really wanted ipad games on big screen. but even so what is the point??? games that are designed for ipad/tablets are also designed to be perfectly playable on the screen that you already have. and if someone would want to play infinity blade on the big screen why not just play a console game that is actually a hell of a lot higher quality in terms of gameplay, story, character development, graphics ... etc??? this thing is useless at 100 bones, maybe if it was like 29.99 then I'd get it just for kicks but even then i'd have a hard time justifying since i don't even play mobile games all that much. only ones i can say i played longer than 5 minutes was cut the rope.

It is very stupid to buy this, the main selling point they are saying is that it is an open "console"(it aint a console) and what big budget games are going to be released if anyone hacks it and gets games for free, what developers want their software out in no mans land open to be hacked.

Ouya is aimed to the free-to-play audience.. games that come to it will be made by indie developers and will cost nothing for the most part.

Anyway, anyone who still believes that a Tegra 3 is gonna run at 1080p for anything but maybe video playback and nes emulation is living a pipedream. 99% of the stuff on the ps3/360 runs at 720p. And those are considerably more powerful platforms. Second, when people are asking why they'd want this, what they are saying is "what does ouya do that my current hardware doesn't do?". The answer is "nothing."

Emulation: You can emulate on just about everything. Hell, my old psp emulates everything up to the n64. Want to emulate on the big screen? Get an original Xbox and soft mod it, and you're into everything including psone and n64.

Video: you can get an original Xbox and xbmc and watch everything. If you want Netflix and Hulu plus, they have apps for every platform on the planet. Ouya does nothing new.Indie games: xbla, psn, and wiiware brought indie gaming to a mass market years ago. And the pc has had indie gaming since its inception.

Open platform: pc anyone? You can run "unsigned code" and tweak hardware to your heart's content. You can even tweak things like clock speeds and voltages. The i5 and i7 k series CPUs are completely unlocked and ramp way up from their factory defaults.

Playing tablet/ cell phone games on the tv: begging the question of "why," you can do it now. My tablet has hdmi out. Dunno about the other tablets out there, but I didn't get a cheap out on my tablet--you get what you pay for.

Playing AAA games: if you think ouya is going to get platform exclusives then you're high. Devs will go where the install base is.

The ouya provides nothing new or useful and will bomb. Sorry ouya fans but it isnt about the best graphics, its about value. for the ouya to have value, it must do something you can't get from its competitors (or the whole must exceed the sum total of its parts). And on every bullet point the ouya has, someone else does it better.

If you want a low cost system, the wii is already a low cost, low performance gaming console. It is also easily soft modded for emulation and media playback. And it has a healthy lineup of great games. Or you could just go last gen and get a ps2--huge line up of aaa games for rock bottom prices, soft mod dabble for emulation and video playback, and the price tag is virtually nothing ($50 for a refurb model at GameStop). Again, while the ouya has hdmi and theoretically supports 1080p, that tegra 3 chipset is only marginally better than an intel atom processor--it will probably struggle with anything over 720p. Which, again, the ps2 can do.

So again, its cost to value ratio isn't there. If you want great games at a low cost, go last gen. If you want better graphics, for $40 more you can get a refurb 360 at GameStop (plus Netflix and Hulu plus). The ouya does nothing that others don't do better.

It won't be a game changer. It will be a flop after six months. Sorry to disappoint. But feel free to spend your $100 (which is not an impulse buy in my budget) on it. It's a free country, and you are free to throw your money away on whatever you wish.

Ouya was the flavor of the month for kickstarter. I have zero faith in this being anything more than a glorified tablet with controller. I can pretty much already do everything that box can on my Asus tablet including hooking up to a tv and using a controller.
