Telltale's The Walking Dead Was Inspired by PS3 Exclusives

Push Square: "Telltale Games’ award winning take on The Walking Dead was inspired by PlayStation 3 exclusives such as Uncharted and Heavy Rain. Chatting with Red Bull UK, co-founder Dan Connors explained that the team spent a lot of time analysing the Sony-published titles during development, in addition to movies and TV shows."

The Last of Us isn't even out yet.

I really wish people would quit talking about that game like it's the Holy Grail of innovation when nobody has actually played it yet.

You should stop making it a habit of having to put the word "Holy" into every text box you see.

I don't know that I've seen anyone say Last of Us looks to be any kind of holy grail of innovation. What it looks like to me, is a game that is on the cutting edge of polish, like many PS3 exclusive have been when they've come out. It's graphics and animation are another step beyond Uncharted 2/3. It's at least touted to have a rich and deep choice system, and everything about the game just seems to OOZE pride, workmanship and polish. Innovation I don't see.....but what I do see is perfection........so far.

Heavy Rain on the other hand, IMO was very innovation in various areas. It just took the adventure game genre up to a completely new level that nothing else has even come close to. The Walking Dead though, which when you're playing it's easy to feel how inspired TellTale was by Heavy Rain's innovations to the genre, is to me easily the 2nd best adventure game ever made behind only Heavy Rain.....which is HUGE praise.

ANd just to comment on another thing mentioned in the article.........With the way TellTale stepped up their adventure games due to their inspiration from Heavy Rain showing that far more can be done in the genre than had been previously........it would be absolutely AMAZING to see TellTale get the rights to make a Star Wars based adventure game. I imagine it could be even better than KOTOR if it lived up to potential.

More shady journalism...

It's great that other games inspired them but at least tell the whole story. This is what's in the article:

"Connors and the team drew inspiration from the comics, as well as more traditional action adventure games - and of course TV."

"I think the games that we talked about the most during development were Heavy Rain and Uncharted from a cinematic standpoint, and Mass Effect from a choice standpoint,” he explains."

"For other media we always look at the best episodic series out there - obviously the Walking Dead TV show, but also Game of Thrones and Mad Men, for the way they handle characters and are able to present them with so much depth."

So it seems the inspiration came from a variety of things.

"... the team spent a lot of time analysing the Sony-published titles during development, in addition to movies and TV shows."

Obviously, their gaming inspiration would have come first... since it's a gaming site that did the interview, and a gaming site that it has been submitted to.

The only reason it's "shady" to you is because there's Sony games involved.

Edit: lmao, message me, then block me?

Yeah, okay. I'm sounding butthurt, but you took time out to call me for some perceived trolling.

Riiight.

PS3 exclusives win Game of the Year. Otherwise it's been a multiplatform game. So no surpise there.

It all depends on who is hosting the event.

Telltale Games and the New Golden Standard for Storytelling

Before the announcement that a heavily narrative focussed Walking Dead video game was announced in 2012, Telltale games was a development studio that not particularly well known. Despite putting out other similar properties with Back to the Future: The Game and Jurassic Park: The Game, the products were largely met with a very mixed and ultimately tepid response from the public. The rampant acclaim and runaway success reached with The Walking Dead launched the developer into one of the most anticipated and favourable studios out there with one revolutionary product.

I think the walking dead story telling is amazing. I really love the games and think that they bring the respect of gaming story telling up in the world of entertainment in general :)
