4 Great Games That Were Not So Great Sequels

Should we judge a sequel differently than a new game? In the case of these offerings: yes.

Nice. More or less agree with the general point, and the choices. Was more tired of Assassin's Creed in Revelations and AC3 than in Brotherhood though. Plus, it introduced the great online mode.

Conzul4125d ago

IMO Brotherhood is where the AC series peaked.

liquidhalos4125d ago

Yeah i also saw brotherhood as the peak of the Assassins creed games. I didnt enjoy Revelations as much and its put me off of buying AC3 until i can find a copy in a bargain bin. I kind of wish they would put more time between games, In the old days sequels were timed better now they are just pumped out. But thats only my opion

prototypeknuckles4125d ago

i disagree with resident evil 4 and assassians creed brotherhood both were great games, now assassians creed revelations, yeah that was boring.

rustyspoon804125d ago

The author isn't saying the games are bad. He actually says they are good. They just aren't as good as the previous games.
RE4 is one of my favourite games but it really isn't a RE game.

But as game development goes up, we'll definitely see more sequels.

hulk_bash19874125d ago

Wow so Dead Space 2 and Resident Evil 4 was "not scary"? I Guess I have a low tolerance for fear cause those games scared the pants off of me.

Conzul4125d ago

Yeah, dead space is full of good startles.

Canary4125d ago

I'm not really a horror fan, but I think the general sentiment is that startles are "cheap" scares, and that horror fans prefer the horror element to be conveyed through atmosphere and ambiance instead of monster jumping out at you from behind boxes and whatnot.

I suppose it's similar to the idea at the heart of all decent horror movies--monsters are scarier when you CAN'T see them.

LOGICWINS4125d ago

^^This game seems like its exactly what your describing. And its FREE!

Irishguy954125d ago (Edited 4125d ago )

I didn't find dead space 1 scary in the least. Re4 wasn't even supposed to scare(well..the regenerator...) and Dead space 2 I never played.

I found dead space 1's "Scares" to be predictable and I think the back round noise ruined it. Would be better to hear Raw Monster sound effects than some shittey little 'shock' music that goes over everything whenever there's supposed to be a scare

LOGICWINS4125d ago

I only got scared twice in RE4. When I first heard the sound of the chainsaw in the beginning of the game and when the Regenerador popped up out of nowhere. Damn near gave me a heart attack lol.

RE3 is still the scariest of all the numbered games IMO. Had nightmares of Nemesis as a kid.

Whats crazy is that in some cases, if you chose not to face him and go to another room, he would follow you!

NoFanboyRequired4125d ago (Edited 4125d ago )

RE1 and 3 scared the crap out of me as a kid.

What got me most on the first one, was the part where you came across the first cut scene of the zombie eating the guy then all of the sudden looked at you with that creepy ass rotted face lol.

Horror games were the best back then. Now they're mostly "meh".

Greyslash4125d ago

Silent Hill 4 was my personal favorite Silent Hill, it scared me half to death, but I agree with Dead Space 2 and RE 4 not being scary, and I get scared by everything.

EA Shoots Down Dead Space 2 Remake Rumors: 'No Validity to This Story'

EA has shut down rumors that EA Motive considered a Dead Space 2 remake before shelving it due to low sales of the previous game, saying there's "no validity" to the reports.

XiNatsuDragnel8d ago

Sure.... right.... at least remake dead space 3 w/o microtransactions bs.

XiNatsuDragnel7d ago

I sometimes I wished I didn't Ngl lol

Knightofelemia8d ago

Why not remake DS2 whether shot down or not it's still my favorite game next to DS1. As much as I hate EA I would buy or would have bought DS2 day one.

MeteorPanda8d ago

No validity XD "Guys guys, we cant possible make a good game or cater to the gamers wants, stop"

Yi-Long8d ago

I don't know if sales met their expectations or not. I just know that the high review scores received my attention so I was interested in buying it, but its price stayed high (50+ bucks) for so long that I simply never bothered picking it up.

Tacoboto8d ago

Doesn't pay full price
Doesn't pay *any* price
Ponders if sales met expectations regarding an allegedly canceled sequel.

Gee...

Yi-Long7d ago

Well, for starters, I'm sure there are plenty of games I never bought which did, somehow, still, meet their sales-expectations.

Concerning Dead Space; I never played and thus cared for the original. It's in multiple genres (shooter, sci-fi, horror) I don't particularly care about so it was barely on my radar pre-launch. I was never its target-audience.

When reviews hit, and it was scoring big, it gathered my interest, so while it wasn't in my field of interest, it mrans that I wanted to give it a fair shot and at least give it a try, as I do with many games across different genres; I tend to just cherry-pick the good stuff and see if it's for me or not.

But, I do wait for sales on those games I take a risk on.

Kornholic7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Lol, you are a huge part of the problem. If a very high-quality game is not even worth 50 bucks to you, then what is?

13 Years Later, Dead Space 2 Is Still A Perfect Video Game

Nameer from eXputer: "Dead Space 2 is a sequel that delivers such a feast that by the time you're done, you're not only full but also satisfied."

Aaroncls728d ago

It was amazing. All 3 DS games game solid for me, but 2 was special.

hombreacabado28d ago

i can do without ds3 but the first two are solid.

mariopasta28d ago

Hope they remake this one too. Just like they did with number 1. The remake of Dead Space 1 was perfection

Terry_B28d ago

thanks to the digital pass for it it was not perfect..in fact its difficult to find a working copy since many years.

If you're wanting more PSVR 2 support, you should probably buy all of these games.

Speak with your wallet!

Profchaos32d ago

Bit rich to have to buy games you don't want because you want Sony to support the expensive headset they sold us which cost as much as the console it runs on beyond paying third partys to support it.
Seriously in terms of first party we have horizon on day 1 and a gt 7 vr mode.

They seemingly have made little effort to support it beyond paying Capcom to make re games in VR or a second party studio to make firewall which was mismanaged.

I'm a day 1 psvr2 user and the only thing I'm excited for right now is PC support.

I commented recently this bespoke VR game development model we have right now clearly doesn't work

crazyCoconuts32d ago

On the one hand I feel like there's been plenty of smaller non-AAA games to play and occupy me as a supplement to my flat screen gaming.
But I agree that Sony has done nothing to elevate this beyond the niche it's in and into the mainstream where it would be economical to create AAA games for it.

Babadook731d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Most of these games are worth owning for most people; I own all but 2 of them in fact. So I agree with kevco33. I think you're crazy if you downplay this list quite frankly. Sony can't keep funding software if people don't buy any of it, the ball is squarely in OUR court.

Sony has spent a lot on 3rd party stuff this gen like RE.

phoenixwing32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

Saving up for the headset is my first hurdle. Let alone buying games I don't want lol

mudakoshaka31d ago

People downvoting you for not having enough finances...what a world we live in, haha

phoenixwing31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

@mudako
They feel affronted at the very thought that I don't plunk down 500 immediately lol I have a little over 900 games in my backlog I've been buying games instead of hardware ever since I got my PC and ps5. I just don't know if vr is really for me honestly. Every time I have a couple hundred allocated to video games it makes more sense to buy a bunch of flat games instead of vr ones

mudakoshaka32d ago

I have 9 out of these 10 games. I try to buy all the VR games I like to support the advancement of VR!

TheEroica31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

I spoke with my wallet after watching the first headset get weak support. Easy pass until Sony earns my money. Feel bad for those who parted with 500 bucks, falling for the hype that Sony was actually gonna support this thing.

Neonridr32d ago

I own 7 of these titles off the list, lol.

NotoriousWhiz32d ago

I'm trying to decide if it's worth holding onto my psvr 2. I enjoy what it has currently, but it seems unlikely to get anything else. Might be better off just waiting for something with more support if that ever comes.

Profchaos31d ago

As a fellow psvr2 owner the question seemingly comes down to do you own a PC.

I think I'm all in I have a habit to hold onto my systems anyhow I still have my psvr1 to hell I still have my NES.

But while it's still worth something yeah you could sell it and if Sony turns the ship around you should be able to buy another one for less than you soldmit for I feel like we won't see any fix for the headset for the next 2 years rumours show that Sony has no current first party VR games in active development after they closed London studios

The whole psvr2 situation has left me feeling a little burnt on PlayStation as a whole to be honest. The first psvr felt experimental but it was supported far more than this superior headset

MIDGETonSTILTS1732d ago

GT7 surprised me, because I hate racing games, but i poured 100 hours into it way too quickly.

I’m looking forward to the Metro VR game this year, and I hope that WW2 dogfighter game releases eventually.

talocaca32d ago

I have most of them 😅

Waiting for a sale on Synapse and Arizona Sunshine 2.....also Metro coming this year looks great.
