Why Crysis 2 bored me to sleep

"There are a lot of things in this world that perplex me. Among them are scat fetishes, university room numbering and the popularity of Kool-Aid, but nothing has baffled me quite as much as the universal praise that Crysis 2 has gotten.

A first-person shooter from legendary tech demo creat- I mean, developer Crytek, Crysis 2 is obviously a sequel to the first Crysis. Its main hook was putting you in control of a versatile nano-suit and letting loose with its powers in an alien-infested New York, and it was both a critical and commercial success. Sounds like a great game, no?

Unfortunately for me, that ‘no’ is an apt answer. I have no shame in saying that Crysis 2 was, without a doubt, the most boring and thoroughly ‘meh’ shooter I’ve played this generation." (Michael Urban, OnlySP.com)

NYC_Gamer4129d ago (Edited 4129d ago )

Crysis 2 is just a boring game.

1)lackluster story
2)weak gameplay

Gazondaily4128d ago

Yeah I thought it was really good. The single player campaign really felt epic and really did push consoles to their limits.

The multiplayer had a lot of potential had the developers not pursued the COD formula that plagues many games today.

camel_toad4129d ago

I personally would have enjoyed it more if the disappearing xp didn't completely alter my gameplay style. I like to stealth-snipe everyone in the area before moving in but with the disappearing xp if I want to get it I have to constantly play run n gun. Hope they change that with 3.

abzdine4129d ago

extremely boring game. story is the worst

Blackdeath_6634129d ago

3) its more of the same.
its just another fps like halo or killzone it brought nothing new.story was flat and the gameplay was linear even compared to previous crysis games. while it was a good looking game on consoles and showed a huge leap in tech on pc it was also good looking but so was crysis warhead which some would argue is a better game in almost every respect.

ATi_Elite4129d ago

Yeh this was a well written article!

Having played Crysis PC a million times I was SO disappointed to play that crappy corridor of a mess called Crysis 2.

WTF happened to the Sandbox and on the fly changing of gameplay!

Crysis allowed you to go from Stealthy Ninja, to Incredible Hulk to the Flash to Rambo with the flick of a mouse at any time. It was brilliant and allowed so many game play options and re-playability was endless.

Crysis 2 did bore me to sleep and was a let down......Oh It looked good I guess but Graphics aren't everything!

Oh and they totally screwed up the story!

TheGamerDood4129d ago

not to mention the visuals were sub par and lacked polish on PC.

tachy0n4128d ago

somebody lives inside the earth, did you checked out the high resolution patch and the Direct X 11 patch??

TheGamerDood4128d ago

Did I install high Rez texture pax? lol I installed user mods that made Crytek's work look like pixelated art and although it greatly improved visuals it did nothing to improve gameplay and performance.

tachy0n4129d ago (Edited 4129d ago )

i should make an article telling, why uncharted bored me to death...

it all comes to people preferences, is not like you are forced to play it lol I actually loved crysis 2 specially at the ending!

come on fanboys give your disagrees! you know truth hurts.

shivvy244129d ago

i think u shouldnt have used Uncharted as an example , but yea its peoples preferences . like theres alot of ppl that didnt like AC3 but i think its one of the few best games ive played in my life

Eyeco4128d ago

I love how you specifically attack Sony fans like there weren't any 360 and PC gamers that thought the exact same thing

onandonandon4128d ago

To death? We should be so lucky!

torchic4129d ago

I enjoyed it a lot only on the Supersoldier difficulty. it made a lot more sense playing that way, because you had to use all the available tools Crytek gave you to advance through the game. they should've made Supersoldier the normal difficulty setting.

and it's hard to tell whether the story was good or not because it was told poorly.

in general I enjoyed it, never played the original so maybe that's why

Oh_Yeah4128d ago

Wait..I know you didn't done did just dissed koolaid...your credibility went out the Window after that line. Koolaid + Fried Chicken.. What beats that combo? Exactly.

Oh_Yeah4128d ago (Edited 4128d ago )

Really don't understand the hate that Crysis gets from n4g. Have you all actually played the series, or is this a trend? Compared to other competitive fps games its right up there with the best. Maybe the campaign or writing isn't all that special but come on neither is any other game in this competitive fps genre. The GAMEPLAY is solid and fun, it's less linear, the way you approach and handle a battle varies much more than say cod or bf with that kick ass suit and all. Overall it's great for what it is. Crysis 2 is like a mix of cod and halo.

PhantomT14124128d ago

They had some intersting and well-designed mechanics like the sliding move or the 1st person cover system. But those were just clusters and overall, it was pretty boring yeah (not bad though, just generic).

drewboy7044128d ago

I loved that game and so did most people I know. The only ones that didnt were the ones that got lost and couldnt figure out where to go or what to do. (Casuals)

Murad4128d ago

Weak gameplay? Dude, have you played Crysis 2? The developers let you infiltrate any basis however you want, either by going in through stealth, or even going for a frontal assault. Not many games allow you to do such a thing.

C2 is a console port, and graphically outmatched by the previous crysis pc exclusive.

Console port and console directed game design is what ruins PC exclusives.

They gimp the game so its able to fit in the consoles limited memory and poor GPUs.

Console ports are ruining the industry.

DeltaCanuckian4129d ago

Or maybe, the game just sucked regardless of whether it was a port or not. Crytek are fantastic programmers, but they can't create good, interesting, enjoyable content to make use of their tech at all.

decrypt4129d ago

So why was it linear corridor shooter compared to the original game?

Arent sequels supposed to build on the original and not take 2 steps back.

BitbyDeath4129d ago

@decrypt, the first Crysis is on consoles as well so likely just bad direction with the 2nd.

cee7734129d ago (Edited 4129d ago )

@decrypt

why is crysis 1 on pc vids just barrel's being blown up that gets boring pretty fast lol most of the youtube vids is just barrels exploding lol a game many needed to upgrade just to play just to blow up barrels lmao

its the the physics lol

Murad4128d ago

Or the people who are playing their games are being very picky.

"Console ports are ruining the industry"

that is one of the most ridiculous things i've ever read on this God forsaken site.

And, IMO, C2 is a very enjoyable game. At least it was on the 360. FTW!

Demureg4128d ago

From now on FTW means "Fuck This Website"!

Lol

Breadcrab4129d ago

I think Crysis 2's failures have more to do with unimaginative design, lackluster storytelling, scrambled pacing, and an overall 'design-by-committee' feel.

Blaming this on 'console-ization' is completely missing the point.

Baka-akaB4129d ago (Edited 4129d ago )

Crytek just made a shitty game on their own . They latter had no issue porting Crysis 1 wich retained most of it's qualities on ps3/360 .

Had they took their time and been less creatively bankrupt , they could have kept C2 in the vein of C1 , even if obviously better on pc

cyguration4129d ago

C1 on consoles was nothing like it was on PC.

Fewer AI routines, worse graphics, smaller scale physics.

Everything that made Crysis 1 stand out on PC was lessened or truncated in the console port. So no, it didn't retain most of its qualities.

dazzrazz4129d ago

Whats ruining your PC industry is the fact that everybody fucking pirates the shit out of games that's why they dont bother anymore making your games exclusive or lead platform

Bladesfist4128d ago

and yet steam is still doing better than Sony. Doubling profits every year for 7 years is nothing to laugh about.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4128d ago (Edited 4128d ago )

Talking out of your ass.

"Xbox 360 led the pack, bringing EA $292 million in the past three months. That compared favorably to the PS3 which did $267 million for the firm. But the PC platform actually managed to outperform Sony's console with $276 million."

Were are you hardcore tactical shooters? oh yeah dead long time ago.

PC gamers hate console ports and especially bad ones. But devs won't take pc more serious until we buy the bad ports in the millions? Ok...

pc gamers tend to take less sh!t than console gamer.. Hence devs feeding you a cod experience left and right enjoy.

Yes pc has pirates! lots! But so do consoles and they are growing!

Xbox 360 pirated Games:
1 Dante’s Inferno (1,280,000)
2 Alan Wake (1,140,000)
3 Red Dead Redemption (1,060,000)

wii pirated games
1 Super Mario Galaxy 2 (1,470,000)
2 Wii Party (1,220,000)

Plus used copies..

http://www.gamepolitics.com...

The worse was The witcher 2 being pirated so much on pc :(.

If next gen consoles are like pc then lol say good buy to ur argument.

Pirating is awful for devs but stop pretending console gamers are angles.

It's not just about money it's about who doesn't mind getting taken advantage of.

You realize you buy $60 + tax games with dlc on your disk that you pay to unlock? Is that not insane to you? But guess what at this point you as one person can't do anything about! It's to late since millions buy.

Murad4128d ago

No, what ruins the PC industry are idiots like you, who keep on pinning the blame on someone else. I do say pirates have a big hand on this, but people like you should just stick to console gaming forever.

FanboyPunisher4129d ago

Crysis 2 was very linear, and had few massive sandboxes like the first crysis.

Yes it was ported to consoles, which destoryed many aspects of the first.

Consoles with only 512mb ram limit what can be designed for a video game. This is why ports are designed for the consoles first, then ported to PC.

Consoles are trash, STEAMs HTCP will be the death of them all.

Hellsvacancy4128d ago

What? Crysis 2 was crap, better graphics wont change a damn thing, Crysis got released on consoles also, guess what? it was boring

TheXonySbox4128d ago

You people are so completely blind with bias its insane, hes 110% correct.

http://www.overclock.net/t/...

ShaunCameron4128d ago (Edited 4128d ago )

WRONG! It's those with higher-end PC's suited for gaming being way too miniscule a market to cater to. Why would developers waste their time, money and resources on such a market?

Anyways Crysis is just another IP.

TheXonySbox4128d ago (Edited 4128d ago )

http://www.overclock.net/t/...

Crysis 1 > Crysis 2 by a massive amount.

Only the minority have the clearity of version to even notice and realize this. Hype and biased dont make your pov correct.

End of story, fanboy is right.

http://www.overclock.net/t/...

Conclusion

I am sure that I will be flamed and criticized but I was also very excited about Crysis 2. I wanted crysis 2 to blow away the first one, I wanted it to be epic in both gameplay and visually. But I am sorry to say that it just wasn't impressive, the graphics are terrible and dx11 is not going to change that. People that say this is just a demo look when the release is... very soon you think they have time to change how the game looks in just a few weeks? I work with programs like maya and have experience in java, you can't just change things like that in a few weeks. This is the way the game looks end of story. The textures are low res, the lighting sucks, and it is dull and boring with poor detail. Anyone who says crysis 2 looks better is just in denial. Just because crytek says it is going to look better doesn't mean it is, they want you to believe that so you will buy the game so they make money.

violents4129d ago

why am I even playing your game if you intend on giving me the finger and putting the game on autopilot so your graphics engine can jerk itself off?

That is one of the funniest things I've ever heard a reveiwer say.

UnHoly_One4129d ago

Yes, but sadly that was the sole highlight of the article, the rest of it was garbage.

Once he started bitching about the stealth being impossible, I gave up reading. I thought the stealth was sweet. I had no problems with it and overall I loved the game. Hell, I actually liked it better than the first game.

This article just struck me as somebody trying to do a written version of a Zero Punctuation, only it was only funny once.

Pandamobile4129d ago

Crysis 2 was by no means a bad game. It just didn't do anything spectacularly IMO.

As a huge fan of Crysis 1, it was rather disappointing, but still a fairly enjoyable game.

Allsystemgamer4129d ago

1 is still one of my favorite games. Despite what people said about it it was fun. U had free reign on how to take out multiple targets and it was well executed. 2.....was nothing like 1 at all. No destruction, poor AI, borin enemies, no open world, and average graphics.

chukamachine4128d ago

I thought the game had better enemies that crisis 1, but although the story wasn't great, the game looked fine.

As for crisis 1, I found it boring in most places. It's not open world. It's just a large island.

Farcry 3 is an openworld, because you can do random things, in a completely random way. And it is much better then crisis 1,2 and probably 3.

MrAnderson4129d ago

I enjoyed it, nothing amazing, but it's a solider shooter, with better graphics, more freedom, and more to do (stealth, special attacks, pucking things up and throwing them etc) that lack in oh let's say...call of duty or battlefield campaigns.

YouTube’s members ‘Digital Dreams’ and ‘Jose cangrejo’ have shared some videos, showcasing Pascal Gilcher’s Reshade mod – which adds Ray Tracing/Path Tracing effects – in some really old games such as Star Wars The Force Unleashed, Crysis 2, RAGE and Resident Evil 6.

I'm still learning how to look for the differences. At first I was focusing on shadows for some reason but I don't think that changes much, is it reflections that change?

rashada071763d ago (Edited 1763d ago )

It is supposed to be simulating how light actually works- so yes if light is reflecting off a surface accurately it should show reflection or an effect that matches what you are looking at in the environment. Next time you play a game look at a puddle of water there may be just a "baked" in texture that if you aren't paying attention seems like it is reflecting but it isn't. I would say though if the light is reflecting more accurately I would think that would give more accurate shadows as well.
I am still not 100% sold on it- it looks okay but I can't get over the hardware price jump for better reflections..

Taz X141763d ago

While games won't look immensely better, it opens up more possibilities overall. Understandably, the price jump is huge. But, that can be said for being at the forefront for any new technology. I'm currently using a 2080ti and while I've played a few games that enable it, the gpu also plays everything else incredibly well so it's not like you're buying this tech for ONLY that option. Enthusiasts will pay top dollar to check out the newest things, but this will eventually become an everyday consumer and by then they'll have optimized and become a lot cheaper.

warriorcase1762d ago

Ray/path tracing can be used how the developer wants it to be. Tracing can be used to calculate shadows/lighting, reflection and even audio, where audio waves are calculated on the bounce off material types to simulate enviroment and echos accuratly.

Should also keep in mind that this ray/path tracing system is different and less accurate option from Nvidias RTX branded type. McFly's is a reshade that layers over the top of the game and therefor the quality will vary drastically. For example you can see nice reflection in the Star Wars demo here but it then introduces colour clipping with the light saber. On a video of GTA 5 for example it was incorrectly projecting a reflection of a red car onto the road which caused a very faint red glow on the ground around the car.

If you want to see a good example of a game developed with ray tracing reflection and lighting in mind then you could look up the youtube video of "Control - Exclusive E3 RTX GAMEPLAY Trailer".

DigitallyAfflicted1763d ago

It supposed to add more realistic light Not actually more light effects and explosions

traumadisaster1763d ago

I hate to say it but I’m fine with fake lights, shadows, reflections. I just kind of like the effect, it’s also great it saves resources for other things.

I’ve been checking out some original Xbox games on x360/x1x and the engine has fake light streaming in through a stained glass window, and I love it even though I know it’s not real time lighting. Heck it even shifts as I move about.

I’ve about convinced my self rt and hdr just doesn’t work for me. Before hdr I would even complain damn why are the headlights killing me they are so bright.

I notice most frame rate, then jaggies, then resolution; with the last two interchangeable depending.

Other day watched an enthusiast rave over 4k and the poor guy was in 1080p. I played the same game the night before and thought wow this is clean, I wonder if it’s 4k, but knew differently and I thought wow even resolution is not always important. The next day he apologized and was surprised he could be fooled.

RaidenBlack1762d ago

EA should have released the Crysis Trilogy Remaster for this gen.

FGHFGHFGH1757d ago

How come the lightsabers don't give off any light? Even in the EA star wars game the guy uses it to light up a dark cave. I guess if it is using frostbite it will support rtx cards.
