Makers of $99 Android-Powered Game Console Ship First 1,200 'Ouyas'

news.yahoo.com: Ouya's makers, who are preparing the console for its commercial launch, encourage interested gamers to pop the case open and use it in electronics projects ... or even to write their own games for it. Especially if they're among the 1,200 who are about to receive their own clear plastic Ouya developer consoles.

I'll probably never get one but welcome the competition, good work guys.

Once this thing gets a ps2 emulator. I buy one.

@Ritsuka

I can't believe im saying this but I agree. The concept of this console is pointless. PC and the IOS are the indie platforms. So Im not sure where this would fit in. I think the only useful thing that will come out of this console is emulators.

PS2 emulator on current Android specs? Keep dreaming

fossilfern4132d ago

Lol youll be waiting a long time to get a PS2 emulator on an android device.

DeadlyFire4132d ago

2014 and beyond ARM CPUs might have enough juice for that, but at the moment I am skeptical.

Ouya is an interesting system. Basically HD Cell phone or PSN/XBLA type games on your TV. Could help some start up developers make some cash though as $99 price point is certain to shift numbers out to the public. This first batch is basically development kits.

Ok, first off, anyone who believes that a Tegra 3 is gonna run at 1080p for anything but maybe video playback and nes emulation is living a pipedream. 99% of the stuff on the ps3/360 runs at 720p. And those are considerably more powerful platforms. Second, when people are asking why they'd want this, what they are saying is "what does ouya do that my current hardware doesn't do?". The answer is "nothing."

Emulation: You can emulate on just about everything. Hell, my old psp emulates everything up to the n64. Want to emulate on the big screen? Get an original Xbox and soft mod it, and you're into everything including psone and n64.

Video: you can get an original Xbox and xbmc and watch everything. If you want Netflix and Hulu plus, they have apps for every platform on the planet. Ouya does nothing new.Indie games: xbla, psn, and wiiware brought indie gaming to a mass market years ago. And the pc has had indie gaming since its inception.

Open platform: pc anyone? You can run "unsigned code" and tweak hardware to your heart's content. You can even tweak things like clock speeds and voltages. The i5 and i7 k series CPUs are completely unlocked and ramp way up from their factory defaults.

Playing tablet/ cell phone games on the tv: begging the question of "why," you can do it now. My tablet has hdmi out. Dunno about the other tablets out there, but I didn't get a cheap out on my tablet--you get what you pay for.

Playing AAA games: if you think ouya is going to get platform exclusives then you're high. Devs will go where the install base is.

The ouya provides nothing new or useful and will bomb. Sorry ouya fans (I can't believe I just said that).

Can we even say its competition? No offense to the Ouya, it's an interesting concept but who in their right mind thinks this is even going to be competition for the Wiiu/Xbox/ps4 or even steambox/PC/smart phones? I hope it does end up doing well, who knows what the future might hold if it takes off.

morkendo234132d ago

"WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND THINK THIS IS EVEN GOING TO BE COMPETITION"

anyone "general public" will, comparing prices of 720 an ps4 when launched. consumers ALWAYS!!! looking for cheap entertainment.

MikeMyers4133d ago

Competition is always welcomed but I have a feeling it won't get the support needed to become mainstream. It will also be hard for game developers to make money on. They will allow anyone to release games on it so there won't be much quality control. On top of that Android has shown consumers are not willing to pay as much as compared to IOS devices when it comes to gaming.

ritsuka6664133d ago (Edited 4133d ago )

There's already a platform that's attractive to indie developers.

It's called a PC.

All you're going to get here in Ouya is the same shit we get in phone games, which is: a soulless piece of shit that tries to cash in on the popularity of a superior game.

jaymart2k4133d ago

Wii U

Dev picks price, sale date/price, no fee to put on system or update

Unlike PS3 & Xbox 360 that charges for updates & sets the price.

Yi-Long4133d ago

... which are now appearing on XBLA/PSN.

Think of top-down racers, of which Reckless Racing 2 is supposedly a very good game. Machinarium also has an Android version I believe.

What if quality games like Super Meat Boy, Fez, ilomilo, Spelunky, etc etc etc will be released for Android insteadof for PSN/XBLA!? Would you still call it crap!?

I'd love for those developers to turn to Android for more freedom and hopefully for us gamers lower prices.

There is a reason you have one bubble.

I had the LaserActive... it was a nice collectors piece but not very practical. Especially when it came to needing recapping. I think i paid all of about $50 for the floor model from an incredible Universe back in the day. I ended up selling it many years later for $300 at the time due to it needing a new laser and the aforementioned recapping.

An honorable mention not on the list would be the VM Labs Nuon. It basically looked like any regular DVD player but it had ports on it for controllers to play specific games. one of which is still exclusive to it with Tempest 3000. It also offered nuon enhanced DVD movies with extra content not accessible by regular players.

How has this article missed out Sega's Dreamcast and Nintendo's Wii U, two consoles that were actually superb devices in their own right, but were seen as failed due to lacklustre sales at the time of release?

Knightofelemia1577d ago

Wonder how long before Stadia appears on the list surprised the Ngage is not on that list

william_cade1577d ago (Edited 1577d ago )

I enjoy these kinds of articles.

Talk about a blast to the past.......I remember trying the virtual boy at Toy R Us and it was cool but I did feel slightly disoriented afterwards......good article.

That's pretty cool they were able to bring it back. It sucks when something online only gets killed.

I got mine when it first launched, however it wasn't good for anything other than retro emulation. I couldn't sell the thing fast enough. Managed to get almost all my money back selling it on eBay.

Xaywhat1609d ago

Just let go homies. It was DOA

JEECE1609d ago

I guess the Stadia launch is bringing back memories of other failed consoles/services.
