The Final Year of Xbox 360

IGN:The original Xbox went out with a bang in 2005, delivering some of the console’s best games ever like Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, and Psychonauts. It seems history may repeat itself, as the Xbox 360 is also set to get a spectacular sendoff in 2013 in advance of the so-called Xbox 720/Durango next fall. Yes, of course, plenty of games will find their way to the 360 in 2014 – good ones, too! – but 2013 marks the final year that the current Xbox will be the flagship of the brand, with the entire world’s eyes (and dollars) fixed upon it.

NYC_Gamer4135d ago

360 is now in the final lap after a strong performance

darthv724135d ago

after a few tire changes and a blown engine or two but yeah...its been a rough ride those first few laps.

hazardman4135d ago (Edited 4135d ago )

Well I have to say after the overhaul they did alright. Cant wait for next gen to BEGIN!

nukeitall4135d ago

Yeah, it is amazing how a few blown tires didn't damage the brand as much as it could. Imagine, if the Xbox 360 didn't blow a tire?

It might have come in comfortably in second place instead of sharing it. Not too shabby for a console that nobody believed in, and was laughed at by the competition.

Enemy4135d ago

Let's play a fun game. Let's play which console has more GOTY winners.

Playstation4LyFe4135d ago

DVD drive.. multiple disks.. pay to play online.. terrible exclusive selection... yea try again later.

Mikefizzled4135d ago

I would value someones view but if they are name is Playstation4LyFe and in a discussion about the direct rival I doubt the opinion will be unbiased

coolvibu934135d ago

PlayStation4Lyfe, your name doesn't suggest any bias at all. Say what you want, but it was the home of the highest rated exclusive first-person, third-person shooter and racing franchise of the generation.

morkendo234135d ago

good riddence, last lap should had happen back in 2006 with RROD,E47,disk errors etc.........

ps4 time to claim AVENGENCE.

Hingle_Mcringleberry4135d ago

Wow. Avengence? Could you be more of a fanboy dork?

doogiebear4135d ago

Xbox has been dragging it's "final" year for the duration of the last 3 years. Ps3 has had more great exclusives in any given year (since 2010), than xbox has had in that entire duration up until now, COMBINED.

MS only cares about the casuals now, so all the "exclusives" are now Kinect games. MS really crapped on their fanbase.

ALLWRONG4135d ago

2012 Sony released only casual games while MS gave it's fans Halo and Forza. Also Wonderbook and Move say hi. Sony hasn't released a core game since 2011 and the next isn't do util Last of Us comes out.

Nice try though

AngelicIceDiamond4135d ago (Edited 4135d ago )

Actually, MS was very consistent from the start of the gen to late 2010 which ended with fable 3 and Reach.

Btw noticed how Xbox sold so much better a year after they're hardcore exclusive reign?

2011 was the ONLY year when they went totally casual, Any year before Kinect it was all about the hardcore.

Now

This year was a mixture of casual Kinect Steel Batallion, Wreckateer, and Star Wars Kinect. Which all three scored low Btw. Which is good if your a hardcore gamer right?

XBL arcade, Minecraft, Trials Evolution, Mark Of the Ninja and Dust: An Elysian tale and Alan Wake: American Nightmare.

Hardcore: Witcher 2, Halo 4 and Forza Horizon. GOW Judgement (coming soon)

It was a mixed year. Again, only 2011 was a casual year for MS. Any year before and soon after will be hardcore.

Beastradamus4134d ago

I sure enjoyed The Witcher 2, Halo 4 and Minecraft... but yeah those don't count.

I would like to see them to continue supporting the 360 all the way up to and past the release of there new console... I remember that Ms stopped support for the original Xbox (well it seemed like before they even released the 360)... with very few exclusive games coming out in 2013 it seems like they are already moving on

I think we still have the 360 through 2014.

Riderz13374135d ago

Doubt it seeing as Microsoft will most likely stop supporting the 360 when the 720 releases (2013).

IC3_DEMON4135d ago

But it's still possible to play 360 games on the 720, right?

If not that's a huge rip-off.

aquamala4135d ago

^^^ can you play xbox games on xbox 360? so I say chances of BC is not good

Riderz13374135d ago

@IC3_DEMON, Nobody knows because nothing has been confirmed.

Dms20124135d ago

Why do you think this?

hazardman4135d ago

yes it will be able to play 360 games.

darthv724135d ago

"can you play xbox games on xbox 360?"

Short answer...yes.

Of all the original xbox games i have there is only 1 i cannot play. MGS2 substance. Every other game i am able to play without issue.

ALLWRONG4135d ago (Edited 4135d ago )

"Doubt it seeing as Microsoft will most likely stop supporting the 360 when the 720 releases"

Nope try harder. MS has made it clear they will continue to support the 360 and it's games. The fact that it's 7 years old is proof of that.

Riderz13374135d ago

@ALLWRONG, Really Microsoft is supporting the 360 right now? Woah way to use logic buddy. Maybe you should read what I wrote. I said Microsoft will drop the 360 when the 720 COMES OUT. What happened to the original Xbox when the 360 came out? It was abandoned. You have absolutely no proof whereas I am going by history.

Xbox 360 has done a great job and will most probably reach 100 million sales.

k-dillinger4135d ago

Naw its not reaching 100 milli the ps3 will and of course the wii aswell

jp_footy24135d ago

To tell you the truth, k-dillinger, it wouldn't surprise me if the PS3 reaches 150 million sales.

DiRtY4135d ago

@jp_footy2

LOL!

To achieve that the PS3 has to be on the market till 2019 (!!!) without slowing down in sales at all.

So a PS4 and rumors of the PS5 by then would not hurt sales of the PS3 at all. Neither would the Xbox 720, Xbox 4 the Wii U, the next Nintendo system or anything like that. I highly doubt that.

jp_footy24135d ago

@DiRtY

By next Christmas, PS3 will probably have reached 100 million sales. Then it will average 8-10 million per year until 2017-18.

Don't forget, the cheapest PS3 you can get in the US is still $269.

When It goes below $199 sales will explode.

josephayal4135d ago

No Doubt one of the best consoles of all time

darthv724135d ago

between the genesis and the 360 i put the genesis first.

In effect, both are similar to one another. they both were the 2nd release to their respected companies and both had to face a tough uphill battle against a more popular competitor that was already on the market.

Meaning genesis came out against the NES until the SNES was released. 360 came out against the PS2 until the PS3 (and wii) were released.

Both managed to garner significant market share and foothold in popular culture.

i have been a long time sega fan so my choice is the genesis for old school gaming and the 360 for current gen gaming.

I do throw a nod out to all contributors in this industry as each one has added more to the entertainment of this hobby than they have hindered it. Even those that didnt go on to have a successful 2nd release like 3do, neogeo, turbografx. They all are worthy platforms to play.

Y_51504135d ago

I haven't bought the original Xbox, not the 360. I would like for the next console to finally convince me to go Xbox but I don't think so. PlayStation and Nintendo had always got me covered when it comes to gaming. Theirs only a few retail games that interest me that's exclusive on the system (Xbox arcade probably has a lot that I might be missing out on though.)But I'm a little curious on what the Next Xbox will bring. Gunstringer was a fun game though.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

CrimsonWing694h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker4h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing694h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos10h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto9h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger889h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).
