1UP's Favorite Games of 2012: Spec Ops: The Line

1up.com: Alongside The Walking Dead, Spec Ops stands as a script that's not just "good for a video game," but one of 2012's best stories across any medium. The arc of Captain Martin Walker provides a stunning glimpse into the downward spiral that resides at the core of all wars.

In my life I ve never felt bad playing a game like this!! ( just finished it one week ago) ..although I hated the ending just because its been done before. ( played bloack ops1 , read shutter island so yeah .. Its getting old )

this year there was not a single game that made me continue just because of the story alone like spec ops did .. Spec ops easily had the best story of any game that came out this year imo (because how shocking and different it was ..)

To each their own. Spec Ops: The Line was actually one of my bigger gaming letdowns of 2012. I found the action terribly repetitive (And I'm a shooter fan). To me, The whole game felt like it was just a giant "horde mode" style mini-game, narrated by Nolan North. I feel like all I ever did was cut down wave after wave of enemy AI. Occasionally shooting out windows and throwing grenades to drop sand on people

Maybe if the ending is that good, I'll yank it off the ol' game shelf, dust it off, and give it another go. I think I was about half-way through..

The game shouldn't really be judged too harshly on its shooting merits (which are no doubt average), but its story risks. It takes a dark turn and plunges deep into the human psyche like few games do, and like no military shooter ever has.

Incredible game with run-of-the-mill combat. It's ambitious where it counts though and definitely a rewarding playthrough for anyone that thought it was just another gimmicky sausage factory shooter.

Damn. Now I definitley gotta finish it!

Spec Ops: The Line was super dark.

Incredible story.

SheenuTheLegend53d ago

all the games in the above list are bang on. this is the only reason we need backwards compatibility and physical presense of games for the upcoming future, no matter what.

Yi-Long54d ago

Honorable mention to the excellent Driveclub, one of the best racing games of all-time and one of my favourite games ever.

melons54d ago

yes! incredible rain effects; so good to drive along in rain with your Spotify playlist blaring

Skuletor53d ago

I really wanted a MotorStorm using the same engine, Driveclub is easily one of the best looking games on PS4 and I'm surprised they didn't even give it a PS4 Pro patch.

ravens5253d ago

Yes indeed. May just install it on my PS5. You know, physical copy and all.

monkey60253d ago

I adored Driveclub and the Bike expansion. I also loved Motorstorm. Evolution shutting down was a crime

Outrun Online Arcade, Sega Rally Online Arcade, After Burner Climax... all good stuff. I keep my 360 hooked up to play these as well as the TMNT games that were also delisted.

Skuletor53d ago

I have quite a few of these. Timed licenses suck.

Terry_B53d ago (Edited 53d ago )

wow...I have all of them except the Nintendo ones either in physical or digital version.

Also..Deadpool the Game is missing on that list.

It's really a shame that the Spec Ops reboot didn't continue into a series. Obviously the story in The Line is over. But each game could have delved into the different psychological effects of war as well as exploring different takes on Heart of Darkness. In a sea of mindless military shooters it was nice to finally play a shooter that actually had something to say.

EazyC73d ago

This game was the last of a dying breed, a signifier of where shooter games (and videogames more broadly) COULD have gone if developers didn't pivot so hard into the online services, micro transaction, season pass, yada yada.

New narrative territory exploring the actual art form of gaming and storytelling within it.

Yui_Suzumiya73d ago

A brilliant depiction into what war can really do to a person and doesn't glorify it in any way.

Psychonaut8573d ago

I heard this game might be getting delisted, which is a travesty, this is one that should be preserved forever

Puty72d ago

I think the title was unfortunate - it was when Moder Warfare got big so I assumed it was yet another clone. Fortunately, because ps plus I checked out this gem of a game.
