The PlayStation years were squares finest moments. Never again will they relive all the awesome games they put out during the coarse of the PlayStation 1. From final fantasy to chrono cross to my all time favorite xenogears. R.I.P squaresoft

Godmars2904137d ago

I still say it was the SNES. The PS1 era is a close second with the FFs and Xenogears, but between Chronotrigger, Secret of Mana, Gun Hazard and the Big N's FFs, Square could literally do no wrong.

Can't forget bahamut lagoon. Underrated gen

AlphaNerd19804137d ago

I own Bahamut's Lagoon and always wished it had gotten a proper release in English. I really liked what little I was able to play in Japanese.

if you own the game is legal to have the Rom so just use a patch and that is it. The game's not that good though. I beat it last year and it was underwhelming. Once you level up the Dragons you don't have to do anything because they will beat the game for you and the entire story takes place in just one place, only the battles themselves change scenarios.

If you ask me just play FF tactics which is a much more superior game in every single way. Or Shining Force III too.

wishingW3L4137d ago

this guy really knows his Final Fantasy! Finally I found something worth reading that isn't related to guns or bullets. -__-

TheLyonKing4137d ago

Those were the ones who defined me as an rpg gamers. Everything from each musical piece to the plot line and well developed characters bring a strong sense of nostalgia :)

Everytime I relax I listen to breezy from ff8 everytime I want a true gaming experience I play 7-10. This was the peak of ff's and no wonder new iterations struggle with standards like that.

From 1996 to 2001 those were argubly the greatest years for Square Soft & will probably never be duplicated ever again.

We had legendary to great titles such as:

Final Fantasy 7-10
Tobal 1 & 2
Bushido Blade 1 & 2
Einhander
Final Fantasy Tactics
Saga Frontier 1 & 2
Valkyrie Profile
Xenogears
Parasite Eve 1 & 2
Brave Fencer Musashi
Chocobo Dungeon 1 & 2
Racing Lagoon
Front Mission 3
Threads of Fate
Chrono Cross
Vagrant Story
Legend of Mana

And that's not including those Final Fantasy Collections & Anthologys. JRPG fans were spoiled during these years & many of us took for granted what we had.

AlphaNerd19804137d ago

I definitely feel that Square Enix has lost their way, and I keep coming back to Tetsuya Nomura and Yoshinori Kitase. Nomura has created such a ubiquitous design style that it's bled into almost every aspect of the Square side of the business, not to mention his silly naming conventions.

And Kitase is clearly tired of making role playing games at this point, going as far to say that he felt that FF XIII has more in common with FPS games than RPGs.

izumo_lee4137d ago

I feels as soon as they lost Sakaguchi the storylines for Final Fantasy games have wavered. Nomura is a good storyteller (co-wrote FF 7) but they are often way to complicated to understand (Kingdom Hearts for example).

Although Sakaguchi is not necessarily the main writer he is the creative mind for many of the older series which is why the stories for them are good.

Personally i think Nomura is under appreciated at Squarenix & it should have been him to lead Final Fantasy series instead of Toriyama who is a terrible writer (he wrote 3rd Birthday...yeah).

It is pretty evident this is the case cause of Final Fantasy vs.13 and the limbo it is in. We got 3 games for Final Fantasy 13 & what a 6min trailer for FFvs.13 in 6 years. Clearly shows what Squarenix thinks of Nomura.

Original Final Fantasy 7 - Is it Worth Playing in 2024?

Final Fantasy 7 has come back under the spotlight thanks to the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but is it worth replaying the original?

ravens5213d ago

Got to Zacks part in 7 Rebirth. Said f it. Finishing my game in 7 og. Just got to part 2 yesterday. I also got Crisis Core... So it'll be a while before I'm back to Rebirth. I just keep thinking about it too smh, want to get back to playing it. Not till I know Zacks story though. I beat 7 og sooooooo long ago, it's crazy going through it again and remembering things.

MrNinosan13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Got to Zacks part in Rebirth?
You mean you started the game and turned it off?
The game starts with Zack...

ravens5213d ago

... Really 🤓 lol. His second part, I've played for 80hrs lmao. <---- PS5 Run time, probably not all game time. You guys know how it goes.

VIK212113d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Did you not ever play the OG FF7? After you recruit Vincent, later in the game, disc 3, return to that basement and look at the pod, there's a whole Zack story that'll trigger as a memory.... it's well hidden in the game and a lot of things regarding Zack are cleared up. FF7 Crisis Core is basically an extend feature of that hidden flashback... It took me years to discover it back then lol

@ravens52
80 hours in Rebirth by doing everything, and you should've reached Zacks story about 5 times 🤣

ravens5212d ago

Ye I kno that's y I said not all gameplay time. But also I am very anal when it comes to exploring.

ravens5212d ago

Not to mention fighting Titan at his full strength. Hours spent trying still haven't succeeded. Found all 3 ruins but I'ma masochist when it comes to games.

Very much so. Graphically it's dated but the story and the gameplay haven't aged a day. It's still one of my all time favourite RPGs and for me is better than Remake in some ways.

Barlos13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

It always takes me back to Christmas 1997, I got it as a gift and I was blown away when I played it. I couldn't believe games could look that good. The combination of pre rendered backgrounds and FMV really made it stand out. It definitely still has a certain charm that modern games can't replicate.

I can't imagine people will still be talking about Remake and Rebirth in 27 years.

Tapani13d ago

Fully agreed. To me the atmosphere, pacing, gameplay and music are all better than in the remake.

Rebel_Scum13d ago

Yes, play this, skip remake, start rebirth for new players.

I_am_Batman13d ago

Skip Remake? That's terrible advice.

leahcim13d ago

Remake is so amazing, pure FFVII Love, play it on PS5 please! aww the graphics the battles, the music... a dream come true.

Rebel_Scum13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I disagree Batman

Rise of the ronin sold twice as much as Dragons Dogma 2 this week...but no articles about that. It's only news if a PS exclusive is being outsold.
