The Right Approach to Violence in Video Games

"In response to the shootings, West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller recently pressured the National Academy of Sciences to study the effects of violent video games on children over prolonged periods of time. While this move has good intentions, I believe that the study would simply throw a bucket of water into an ocean of studies on the same topic, and—most importantly—the study would fail to address the true culprit of the tragic shooting." | Explosion.com

Good article, and good take on one of the ways these types of tragedies can be avoided.

How about they also study the effects of violent movies on children while they are at it.

... which hardly takes care of, or pays attention to, those with depression ("HERE TAKE SOME PILLS THAT SHOULD FIX YA RIGHT UP!!!") or mental-illness, combined with very easy access to ridiculously overpowered fire-arms...(!)

These killers are in it for one thing. It's not even mass-murder cause there are easier way to do that and to get away with it.

They're looking for attention! One last statement that they were here. That they were SOMEBODY, instead of being forgotten as a nobody.

And our society with our news-media does just that, which means that when you shoot up a school or a theater or whatever, your name will forever be remembered. You'll be on every network station, 24/7, for days or even weeks, and with every new tragedy your name will comeback up again.

There have been countless studies on the influence of violent videogames on our psyche. Time and time again it shows very clearly that it doesn't CAUSE violent behaviour. In fact, most argue that they probably help relieve stress.

The whole motivation when playing a videogame also isn't aggression. It's to have fun and to become more skilled. It's completely different to point a gun in a videogame than it is to do so in real life. The emotion behind it isn't similar.

For once, I wish the politicians would get serious about this issue, instead of just quickly fingering another scapegoat in the hope of winning some more votes.

Stellar blade is currently higher than lies of p on metacritic with 40 more reviews. No shade on Lies of P but just pointing that out.

But i don't even know why compare them? Because both are souls type games?

Then you can just reuse this article all the time and say Elden Ring is "whatever new souls game" but good for every new souls game.

Stellar blade hate articles must be rolling with clicks...

CrimsonWing6938m ago

I mean… it’s like saying we have a better NieR with Devil May Cry. Yea, there’s some similarities, but Lies is really hardcore in the sense of emulating a FromSoft game almost perfectly, where Stellar has some Souls-like elements, but I’d say it’s closer to Sekiro than say a Dark Souls game. This almost feels click-baitey

Psychonaut8533m ago

What if, and hear me out, they’re both really good? Mind blowing, I know.

Christopher25m ago

Listen here you, that's not how this is supposed to work. You choose a side and you defend it. None of this little "what if there's more than one good game out there" nonsense.

Crows9026m ago(Edited 23m ago)

Oh geez...this is why journos suck...they can't even see differences between games.

Stellar blade is nothing like lies of P. Didn't these guys give stellar a bad score? Geez they really hate it. Stop the hate! Lol
