PS4 Release Date, News and Rumors

Sony is yet to confirm the existence of the PS4 games console, but it exists out there somewhere. And with Christmas 2012 upon us, we're all hoping we'll have PlayStation 4 consoles under our trees this time next year.
So the important questions are; when will the PS4 hit the shelves? What sort of hardware will it pack? And will it even be called the PlayStation 4?

Sony and MS are engaged in a staring contest.
I just wish one of them would blink, I don't care which one.
My brain needs facts and figures to digest.

decrypt4137d ago (Edited 4137d ago )

You could probably check the with AMD what both the locked down PCs will be featuring.

AMD probably load them up with some left over tech. Leave the hyping to MS and Sony.. you will get to hear claims like:

"Its Does 4D"
"Toy Story graphics"
"Lucid Dream"

Thats the sort of technicals console makers release most of the time lol. You dont get much Facts and Figures from them :P lets stop pretending as if its the PC industry where manufacturers will throw benchmarks your way to give you some evidence on whats really coming your way.

Anyways when you do get a first glimpse of the actual boxes, things to look out for will be :

Size & power consumption.

Why the 2 of those things?

Console makers will do everything in their power not to release much details at all. It will just be blatant marketing.

Well size will determine how hot the parts in this thing run, if its a cramped box like the Wii U then most likely its got low end hardware in there, that doesnt need much ventilation.

Power consumption, because its obvious anything powerful will require a good amount of power. If the consoles are rated for anywhere near a 100 watts expect them to be weak. A rating anywhere close to 200watts and we are talking about good amount of power(for a console, In comparison to PCs it will still be about equal in performance to a low end gaming PC).

Most likely i predict it will be compact boxes designed to be cost effective. So that MS and Sony can profit day one.

extermin8or4137d ago

You're power consumption point is wrong, they may well have very low power, because the parts are all customized by the manufacturer, as it has to do very little other than play the games, unlike a normal pc :p

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4137d ago (Edited 4137d ago )

@The Meerkat

They will most likely be more powerful than wiiU chew on that for now.

This is what you want?

ABizzel14136d ago

What you want. But not going to happen.

Those GPU's alone cost more than a 32GB Wii-U.

3-4-54137d ago

good comparison.

I think they are both trying to avoid blinking until the Summer.

Until I see a spike in Sony's R&D department, I don't believe the PS4 will release in 2013. Speculations all point to a 2014 release being the earliest.

Thatguy-3104137d ago

Well if I recall didnt activision said only one console will launch next year? The valve console is a for sure thing so maybe sony and Microsoft will go for early 2014. I hope not though because im really anxious for a new system.

BitbyDeath4137d ago

Someone posted the R&D figures the other week and showed it was no different to the PS3. PS3 didn't spike R&D remains consistent as it never stops between cycles.

extermin8or4137d ago

Sony announced at investor call last year, that R and D costs were incurred by next gen console development were in the figures, I think sony start as soon as their console launched and just slowly work on it from that point onwards?

KangarooSam4137d ago

Random thought, although somewhat on topic: how's the instant games collection gonna work with no back catalog? :/ I don't have the money for picking one up on day one anyway, but for the people who are and with the rumors of PS4 not being backwards compatible; what's up with that?

tbon3man4137d ago

Just don't get rid of your PS3 until some firmware updates or we know for sure the PS4 is or is not backwards compatible.

DA_SHREDDER4137d ago

the ps3 isn't like the ps2, like you mentioned, with firmware updates, the ps3 will be relevant for a very long time, and it wouldn't surprise me if it sold more than even the ps2 did.

jacksheen00004137d ago

Second hand games on the way out? Hope this isn't true because if for any reason your game system break down you'll be suck with a bunch of games that won't work for any other game console. That said, I hope Microsoft/Sony include a life time warranty or they'll end up pissing off a lot of PS4/720 owners.

KangarooSam4137d ago (Edited 4137d ago )

It would be connected to your PSN ID/Gamertag. Therefore, just retrieve that and you're all good. :)

On the other hand; I still don't effing want that lol. Online passes are bad enough. Registering games sounds horrible. The only time I trade in games is when I've played the hell out of it and some place offers great deals (like Gamestop just did with the 200%+ values), so it doesn't effect me hugely. But say average Joe over here spends $60 on a game day one and ends up hating it, he should be able to sell it to someone else for $50 or whatever.

They're just gonna be punishing the consumer and making us more weary of the purchases we make. So, it'll really just make business hard for trade in places i.e. Gamestop, Best Buy (won't really hurt them), etc.

So yeah, way to go damaging the economy if you follow through with this Sony and Microsoft >_>

Ippiki Okami4137d ago

"Second hand games on the way out?"

This rumor was already debunked. Not gona happen unless they want gamestop and other retailers to lose money they get from used game sales.

violents4137d ago

I like the way ubisoft does it. New game comes with voucher to unlock online stuff. Buy it used and you have to buy a 10 dollar online pass. Sounds fair. The dev still gets thier money for you playing thier game and you still get it cheap.

Other devs should adopt this strategy to avoid the whole "lock out used games" arguments.

3GenGames4137d ago

You like that? Man, it seems like every single gamer out there is pretty much just a tool today. Supporting that garbage is retarded. Only an IDIOT could justify DLC or online passes. I buy a game disk, I get the right to use the online. End of story. The person who bought it isn't evem taking up server space, FFS! F*** those publishers. And f*** people who support that.

violents4136d ago

@ 3gengames.

You are the reason developers fail. If you dont cut in the dev how are they supposed to have the capitol to make that next big game you want to play. Buying used is nice to have but when you find out you favorite series is being cut or whole developer goes under, wouldn't it seem better if everyone who is really a fan threew in there share so those people can still have jobs and we still get awsome games?

3GenGames4136d ago (Edited 4136d ago )

What a joke. How many inide games have you bought? What a crock of sh**. Developers fail because they make bad games and have bad management. Not because they're starved for money. They're maximizing profits, not staying a float f***tard. I'll buy all my games 3 months old, with online, and for $35 on steam thank you. Would games that haven't made money go for that price? LOL HELL NO.

And I do program. I make games myself. I can tell you, this is ALL just sh**. They don't need money. They maximize profits. Look at EA. You think a game that sells 2,000,000 copies NEEDS $10 more per game to stay afloat? No, you're a a MORON.

violents4136d ago

@3gengames

So its ok to steal now. Your straight up stealing stuff from an industry you make money from and encouraging others to do it too.

And frankly it doesn't matter who's game your buying indy or not. Your still technically stealing from that dev. People get sued all the time for downloading music illegally, but its ok for you to do it with games? So we can share games but not music?

Realistically It makes sense. Your using up server space that they have to maintain, why shouldn't you put in your fair share? O because you just some A-hole that claims to be a programmer on the internet websites and cusses at people a lot. If you actually were in the industry I think it may be safe to say that you would have better points than "i'm a tool". I would ask you to tell me some more fairy tales from you wonderful land of game programmers with anger managment issues, however I have to go support the developers I like by buying thier games.

BTW what company do you work for so I can never support your games. Matter of fact I'll pirate a few so I can steal from you too.

Please do not put Destiny’s monetization into Sony’s first party games. The monetization is what’s driving players away from Destiny.

PlayStation officially losing it.. fans will never support gaas games

just_looken14d ago

@car

The new boss did a interview in japan he wants to tap into the mobile market like nintendio so he give 0 fucks about gamers/fans

https://www.pushsquare.com/...

Redemption-6414d ago

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long14d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197214d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

DivineHand12514d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91314d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer14d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91314d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit14d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

Christopher15d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6914d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit14d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher15d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken14d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197214d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2314d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218314d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder14d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.

Sony has patented to add multiple dialogue modes to let players switch between how many conversations with NPCs they want in the game.
