Crytek’s chief: Nothing will beat Crysis 3′s graphics for at least two years (interview)

Let the graphics wars begin. Cevat Yerli, chief executive of Crytek, argues that his company’s upcoming game, Crysis 3 (to be published Feb. 19 by Electronic Arts) will “set the benchmark” in 3D graphics for games for the next two years. He believes the PC is racing ahead of the consoles now in terms of the beauty of its graphics.

Now, if Sony or Microsoft really push out some amazing graphics in some of the games they launch their next consoles with then Crysis 3 may only hold the graphics crown for a year or so. But that remains to be seen.

I just tested Metro with every setting at max at 1080p. I have an OCed 2600K and two GTX 670 4 GB cards in SLI. I could get 60 fps much of the time in enclosed areas, such as in towns, but the frame rate still dropped noticeably in effects heavy or busy segments. I'd be really curious to know how two 6970s are supposedly outperforming my PC. Did you mean two 6990s?

I can certainly get a playable frame rate at max (@ 1080p, that is), but that's not a high resolution by PC gaming standards, and it's ridiculous that I need this much power for a game that largely takes place in corridors. Metro is certainly not a well optimized game. I'd hate to think what you'd need to get a stable 60 fps at a very high resolution at max. Metro is a great looking game, but it demands about 3 or 4 times more power than it should for what you get.

I actually got down to playing Crysis 1 on my friends PC, it was a good game nothing amazing imo I found it to be an EXTREMELEY overrated game, maybe because for the past 4 years its the only game that i've heard PC elitists brag about. Then again I don't blame them because the game single handedly undermined the hyped up "power" of the 360 and PS3.

The impression I got on the internet was essentially the greatest game ever, Yes the graphics are incredible the best i've ever seen in a game but aside from that I found the gameplay to be quite bland.
For example the weapons felt underwhelming or indistinguishable , the suit was laughably overhyped the only power up that was ever useful and actually had a general impact on the gameplay was the invisibility, engaging the enemy was a chore rather than a rewarding or fun experience , further exemplified by the Aliens which were an absolute chore to engage.

Really the game just felt like I was walking from point A-B rather than engaging in compelling level design, this became more apparent when I used the invisibility, the experience at that point pretty much boiled down to the equivalent of walking through a corridor of pretty paintings. IMHO Crysis is one of the most overrated games of all time.

Well, they were right for a while about Crysis 2, at least on Xbox 360 for a good while. I hadn't played a game that was as graphically powerful as Crysis 2 till I don't even know what.. Battlefield 3, Skyrim, and Forza 4 were the games that wowed me after Crysis 2 did.

Skyrim just uses a bunch of filter effects to make the game look smooth and well lit, but in reality, it a jaggy, los-res mess on consoles.

Honestly, I don't think Skyrim is a graphical masterpiece at all, whether on consoles or PC (unless you use mods of course). I appreciate the game as an open world RPG, it really doesn't need to wow anyone with graphics. Battlefield, while beautiful, again doesn't need to impress people with its graphics because it's flat out just a really fun game. I played Crysis 2 on both PS3 and Xbox for a short time, enough to play through at least half the campaign and a few hours of multiplayer, and honestly, I felt like I was playing Call of Duty in yet another boring incarnation of New York City.

I'm sorry but that's not true. Try Crysis 2 with the latest official DX11 patch and HD textures, plus install quality mod 1.9 and Maldo HD 3.0 textures, then you'll have one of the most amazing looking games up to now, if not the best.

I agree, without mods Metro 2033 outshines Crysis 2 DX11 even with their high res patch. The particle effects and lighting were insane in metro on ultra and physx turned on running dx11, smoke from the weapons fired, shell casings on the the ground, weapon decals, ragdolls, and the details on the characters. You could literally slice away at someone's face until you start seeing the bones and flesh.

Metro last light doesn't have to deal with things like foliage rendering though so as an engine / what the game is trying to achieve it isn't even in the same ballpark as what they're doing with Cryengine 3, in Crysis 3.

A lot of what makes metro look pretty is lighting and filters.

Also Crytek are selling their engine as much as their games, so of course they're going to boast about it's graphical fidelity over anything else.

Personally I found all of their games to be very enjoyable too. Far Cry was great, then Crysis was pretty good also, Warhead had decent MP, Crysis 2 was hit and miss for many but I really enjoyed it - Crysis 3 looks to take the best of Crysis 1 and 2, I'm sure it'll be a good game.

The Crysis series is indeed some great fps games regardless of graphics, the people that hate on it and say oh it sucks it just gets hype because it looks good. Crytek in my opinion have the wrong idea here, they release games that run at poor framerates for at least 2 years until hardware catches up, Crysis and Oblivion as well as some others are a good example of this. They struggled to maintain 30-40FPS on even the best graphics cards on release which is pathetic.

Games are meant to be played on release at 60+FPS, they focus too much on graphics, with (imo) not very good gameplay.

Give me a Valve game any day that performs really great at 1920x1080 and a steady high framerate over a game that isn't as good and just better to look at.

Very bold claim to make on the graphics, but that's only just a piece of what is needed. My concern is the overall gameplay. From what they said in the article it seems like the gameplay might be pretty fun, and much improved over Crysis 2 boring gameplay.

Seems like they took a page from Far Cry 3s book with how hunting plays apart with everything. Not necessarily a bad thing either if implemented correctly.

Crysis 2 was clearly rushed. I think the delays and patching in of DX11 and high resolution textures made this pretty obvious. The PC version in particular got off to a pretty dreadful start. I think Crytek learned that making their first big multiplatform game with a brand new game engine is actually can take quite a bit of time and effort. LOL. I don't expect these types of problems with Crysis 3, however, plus the early previews I've read have been pretty positive. A greater focus on stealth and variety was the right way to go.

It's going to be pretty tough to remain the graphics king for 2 years. I have my doubts about that, but I am glad to hear that they are pushing the envelope. The thing is that the new consoles are going to come out next year, which tends to raise the bar quite a bit as far as graphics standards. It will be much easier to make a multiplatform game with a higher top end on PC if you have DX11 consoles that have substantially more power. Those cool "next gen" engines that have been demoed will start becoming the platform for actual games.

To be honest companies like Crytek are primarily technology houses, more so than a talented games studio. Crysis 3 is basically a multi million dollar advertisement to try and license the engine to more developers. If they can show something off grand of what Cryengine 3 is truly capable of, then they hope to gain a leg up on Epic at the start of a new generation.

Of course, much more detail can be rendered when the game is made to cater to a corridor minded gamer mentality. If the game was gonna actually be 'like' Crysis should be, it should be islands, huge aliens and war all going on at once. This is just crysis 2 corridors with foliage.

It may be the best graphics on PC. But it'll be the best graphics on PC for a corridor shooter. Generic and trivial.

No it really wasn't. Open World means you can traverse the entire game world without any restriction. You couldn't travel from later maps back to where you started.

What Crysis 1 did was give you very large linear levels. It feels very "open" but its not, and Crytek has even said as much.

I'm not hating on Crysis 1, its one of my all time favorites, an honor I don't bestow lightly.

If you've played with the CryEngine 3 sdk, then you know how powerful it is. Nothing will touch Crysis 3 graphically until UE4 games in 2014. CryEngine 4 vs UE4 will be a heck of a battle. With UE4 removing Unrealscript and using all c++ with Code View and Kismet 2, development will be much easier and faster. Though engines are not just about graphics.

Good to know. We need more games like Crysis 3 and Metro Last Light to push the limits of PC hardware, otherwise we'll be sitting here forever for a true next-gen console announcement to be blown away which is not going to happen any time soon from the looks of the industry. If it's going to be the next big thing in terms of graphics for today's standards, I and my gamin rig will be happily embracing it. Now let's use DX 11.1 and get the PC gaming back to its roots rather than pushing out embarrassing console ports that we're sick of. Sleeping Dogs did a great job, Hitman Absolution looks fantastic on PC, all of the Frostbite 2 games blow their console counterparts away. It's great but time to see the next-gen PC graphics which utilise GPUs like 680-7970 at their full capacity, and I don't see a better candidate to show us the future of PC graphics other than Crytek; those dudes make games that can only be maxed out if you have the highest end PC or if you wait a couple of years to have a PC at a reasonable price which can handle the game, so if they say their game is two years ahead, I believe them without hesitation.

No offend to console gamers (which I am a member of) but most of us out there gaming on PC at the very end of a generation do that for a reason: we're getting bored of waiting for the next big step in terms of graphics, and this gen took it slower than ever which is getting annoying as hell and yeah, we need devs like Crytek for this very reason. Even console gamers need them to program gorgeous looking games as companies like Crytek and Epic force console publishers to improve their console hardware. Those are the reason why you're getting powerful consoles and those guys set the limits in terms of visuals, so please think about it for a second before bashing people mindlessly. We NEED devs to push Sony/Microsoft to release their long awaited consoles sooner with a capable hardware to run these mind blowing game engines like CryEngine 3, UE4, Frostbite 2, Lumious Engine etc. The bottomline is that I whole heartedly support their enthusiasm for graphics development and I'm happy that they're doing so for all of us.

Modded GTA 4 looks insane, should Rockstar say they're going to destroy planets with GTA5? No.

The arrogance though, is what annoys me most, let other devs get into the next generation and work their magic, it's not like Naughty Dog is making The Last of Us ( for example ) a DX11 PC beating masterpiece, they're making it for PS3, with what they offer.

Crysis 3 is probably gonna be boring as hell like Crysis 2. Why can't they just make it like Crysis 1 again? To me, that game still looks more realistic, because Crysis 2 introduced this weird-ass ghost blur effect and some lightning effects that look too shiny, compared to real world lightning.

So they're own games coming out in the next 2 years won't be surpassing Crysis 3? And that's not necessarily a good thing anyway. If no game can surpass your graphics for 2 years that means you focused most of your time and resources on graphics rather than making a good game. Crytek's games would be so much better if they took the time to flesh out their ideas and focused less on graphics. They really do have great ideas, but they are never realized anywhere close to their full potential.

I have 2x HD 7970GE and I run Metro 2033 maxed out, all Very High settings, DOF, DX11, Testalation, 4xAA, 1920x1200, forced vsync through D3Doverrider tool - average a constant 60 fps at all times.

It's well known, through various benchmarks, that urrent gen Nvidia 600's series cards don't perform as well as in Metro 2033 as AMD's 7000's series flagship. So don't be surprised that you get frame drops with 680's.

As far as photo-realism goes and in terms of performance, I think Crysis 3 is a plausible candidate for such.

But their aesthetics are kinda getting boring and I hate the tinted (brown/green) theme they're going towards as opposed to a more neutral but wider color approach.

The PC always raced ahead of the console with graphics, BUT you need an expensive graphics card to achieve that quality at high settings.

The beauty of a console is just that, that it work and works well mostly. I have a PC for gaming as well as a console and definitely will still buy a next gen console in future.
