Crytek’s chief: Nothing will beat Crysis 3′s graphics for at least two years (interview)

Let the graphics wars begin. Cevat Yerli, chief executive of Crytek, argues that his company’s upcoming game, Crysis 3 (to be published Feb. 19 by Electronic Arts) will “set the benchmark” in 3D graphics for games for the next two years. He believes the PC is racing ahead of the consoles now in terms of the beauty of its graphics.

Something tells me this is gonna bite him in the ass later. Think he is underestimating Metro last light among other games.

MikeMyers4143d ago

True. Besides, wouldn't you rather be known for making some of the best games, not the best graphics?

R6ex4143d ago

Crysis was known for best graphics, not best gameplay. That's what brought Crytek fame. I really hope Crysis 3 will look so amazing that it will encourage gamers to upgrade their GPUs.

Pandamobile4143d ago

@R6ex under all the shiny graphics, Crysis 1 is still an amazing shooter.

da_2pacalypse4143d ago

lol yeah... This guy can somehow see the future?

Irishguy954143d ago (Edited 4143d ago )

Crysis are like Killzone games, great/focus on graphics, with good gameplay.

Except killzone is limited by the Ps3

Ritsujun4143d ago

and Irishguy95's limited by lack of exclusives

Zhipp4143d ago

@Ritsujun
You're aware that the PC has more exclusives than all current-gen consoles combined, right?

starchild4143d ago

I'd say he is probably right. I have seen nothing on the horizon that even comes close to competing with Crysis 3.

Now, if Sony or Microsoft really push out some amazing graphics in some of the games they launch their next consoles with then Crysis 3 may only hold the graphics crown for a year or so. But that remains to be seen.

Crysis 3 does look absolutely amazing.

Lets hope Metro last light is actually optimized to run smooth on rigs other than NASA supercomputers this time around though.

TitanUp4143d ago

my 2 6970s plays that game fine

AKS4143d ago (Edited 4143d ago )

@Farsendor1

Very High, DOF, 16x AF, high resolution?

Metro at max is probably the most demanding game I have.

Twignberries4143d ago

@Farsendor1 sorry to be blunt mate either I'm calling bullsh*t on your comment or you're not truly maxing it out. I've got 2x gtx680 with 32 gb ram and I can't run it properly maxed. Mind you that's at 2560x1440

AKS4143d ago

I just tested Metro with every setting at max at 1080p. I have an OCed 2600K and two GTX 670 4 GB cards in SLI. I could get 60 fps much of the time in enclosed areas, such as in towns, but the frame rate still dropped noticeably in effects heavy or busy segments. I'd be really curious to know how two 6970s are supposedly outperforming my PC. Did you mean two 6990s?

I can certainly get a playable frame rate at max (@ 1080p, that is), but that's not a high resolution by PC gaming standards, and it's ridiculous that I need this much power for a game that largely takes place in corridors. Metro is certainly not a well optimized game. I'd hate to think what you'd need to get a stable 60 fps at a very high resolution at max. Metro is a great looking game, but it demands about 3 or 4 times more power than it should for what you get.

JANF4143d ago

Did you say Killzone 3... huh? The game looks good but not in the same league of Crisis or Metro on PC.

tachy0n4143d ago

he was refering to the PC not consoles.

SilentNegotiator4143d ago

He said the same garbage about Crysis 2 and they didn't get bit at all. They created a disappointing sequel and still sold just fine.

Eyeco4142d ago (Edited 4142d ago )

I actually got down to playing Crysis 1 on my friends PC, it was a good game nothing amazing imo I found it to be an EXTREMELEY overrated game, maybe because for the past 4 years its the only game that i've heard PC elitists brag about. Then again I don't blame them because the game single handedly undermined the hyped up "power" of the 360 and PS3.

The impression I got on the internet was essentially the greatest game ever, Yes the graphics are incredible the best i've ever seen in a game but aside from that I found the gameplay to be quite bland.
For example the weapons felt underwhelming or indistinguishable , the suit was laughably overhyped the only power up that was ever useful and actually had a general impact on the gameplay was the invisibility, engaging the enemy was a chore rather than a rewarding or fun experience , further exemplified by the Aliens which were an absolute chore to engage.

Really the game just felt like I was walking from point A-B rather than engaging in compelling level design, this became more apparent when I used the invisibility, the experience at that point pretty much boiled down to the equivalent of walking through a corridor of pretty paintings. IMHO Crysis is one of the most overrated games of all time.

UnholyLight4143d ago

Well, they were right for a while about Crysis 2, at least on Xbox 360 for a good while. I hadn't played a game that was as graphically powerful as Crysis 2 till I don't even know what.. Battlefield 3, Skyrim, and Forza 4 were the games that wowed me after Crysis 2 did.

Hufandpuf4143d ago

Skyrim just uses a bunch of filter effects to make the game look smooth and well lit, but in reality, it a jaggy, los-res mess on consoles.

Reverent4143d ago

Honestly, I don't think Skyrim is a graphical masterpiece at all, whether on consoles or PC (unless you use mods of course). I appreciate the game as an open world RPG, it really doesn't need to wow anyone with graphics. Battlefield, while beautiful, again doesn't need to impress people with its graphics because it's flat out just a really fun game. I played Crysis 2 on both PS3 and Xbox for a short time, enough to play through at least half the campaign and a few hours of multiplayer, and honestly, I felt like I was playing Call of Duty in yet another boring incarnation of New York City.

Eyesoftheraven4143d ago

Metro Last Light, battlefield 4, Last of Us.

Now I'm all for pushing technology as much as possible, but c'mon Cevat, a little humbleness never hurt anyone.

The Last of Us looks incredible and on just PS3! You don't hear Naughty Dog bragging about it every chance they get and look at the praise, awards and nominations they've already achieved!

WetN00dle694143d ago

yeah The Last of Us looks great BUT there is no WAY in hell that it can go up against Crysis 3 NO WAY IN HELL!

Reverent4143d ago

@Wet, also consider that The Last of Us is a PS3 (You know, a console) exclusive. Don't get me wrong, I love the PS3, but just imagine if ND wasn't limited by it's hardware. The things they will accomplish on the PS4 will be legendary, if it isn't already.

Eyesoftheraven4142d ago

@WET, It doesn't have to go up against Crysis 3 maxed out on a PC because either way, and I'm pretty sure it's hardly very subjective The Last of Us looks technically incredible.

Welshy4143d ago

I wonderful if it will have wonderfully rendered paper-flat shell casings like Crysis 2 again!

If they just shut up, released their game and let people see how good it is for themselves, they wouldn't have to go like this then get burned when Metro Last Light kicks it's ass.

I personally felt even Metro 2033 outshone Crysis 2 when both were maxed out.

Crytek: the masters of regrettable BS statements.

AKS4143d ago

"I personally felt even Metro 2033 outshone Crysis 2 when both were maxed out."

I'm not so sure about that. Crysis 2 looked pretty damn good at max with the DX11 and high res patches.

http://cloud-2.steampowered...

Braid4143d ago

I'm sorry but that's not true. Try Crysis 2 with the latest official DX11 patch and HD textures, plus install quality mod 1.9 and Maldo HD 3.0 textures, then you'll have one of the most amazing looking games up to now, if not the best.

iNcRiMiNaTi4143d ago

I agree, without mods Metro 2033 outshines Crysis 2 DX11 even with their high res patch. The particle effects and lighting were insane in metro on ultra and physx turned on running dx11, smoke from the weapons fired, shell casings on the the ground, weapon decals, ragdolls, and the details on the characters. You could literally slice away at someone's face until you start seeing the bones and flesh.

That is a long wait ;/

Or the is been a prick and he meant that crysis 4 will come two years after crysis 3?

RuperttheBear4143d ago

'Crysis 3 on PC is going to be a benchmark experience for at least two years.'

On pc. PC. Sorry did you read the interview?

No, of course you didn't. You just looked at the headline and decided to churn out the old Guerrilla games /naughty dogs/santa Monica line that ps3 fanbois always churn out.

chukamachine4143d ago (Edited 4143d ago )

Last light looks nothing special, and no it's nowhere close to the CRYSIS3 engine. Nothing is.

Metro 2033 was a corridor shooter, and was boring.

I don't doubt the new game will be the same.

Metro is demanding because it's poorly coded. optimization never happened.

http://www.gamersyde.com/st...

ChronoJoe4143d ago

Metro last light doesn't have to deal with things like foliage rendering though so as an engine / what the game is trying to achieve it isn't even in the same ballpark as what they're doing with Cryengine 3, in Crysis 3.

A lot of what makes metro look pretty is lighting and filters.

Also Crytek are selling their engine as much as their games, so of course they're going to boast about it's graphical fidelity over anything else.

Personally I found all of their games to be very enjoyable too. Far Cry was great, then Crysis was pretty good also, Warhead had decent MP, Crysis 2 was hit and miss for many but I really enjoyed it - Crysis 3 looks to take the best of Crysis 1 and 2, I'm sure it'll be a good game.

Abriael4142d ago (Edited 4142d ago )

Something tells me that Star Citizen is going to make him eat his words with a side dish of bile.

Oh_Yeah4142d ago

The Crysis series is indeed some great fps games regardless of graphics, the people that hate on it and say oh it sucks it just gets hype because it looks good. I really doubt you gave it a chance...the game play is fun, it's more free rome-ish/ the way you chose to play the game varies more so than halo, cod, or battlefield.

Knight_Crawler4142d ago (Edited 4142d ago )

@Majie - you canot compare last light which is a brown grey shooter compared to a game that has more colors than just Brown, Black, green and grey.

FlyingFoxy4142d ago (Edited 4142d ago )

Crytek in my opinion have the wrong idea here, they release games that run at poor framerates for at least 2 years until hardware catches up, Crysis and Oblivion as well as some others are a good example of this. They struggled to maintain 30-40FPS on even the best graphics cards on release which is pathetic.

Games are meant to be played on release at 60+FPS, they focus too much on graphics, with (imo) not very good gameplay.

Give me a Valve game any day that performs really great at 1920x1080 and a steady high framerate over a game that isn't as good and just better to look at.

Don't disagree...it's the truth, thats why Crysis 2 was a huge let down that year.

EDIT: Belo

Yeah that was MODS, not Crytek

Yes indeed ^
Crysis 2 was amazing with DX11 + High resolution textures, and certain graphical mods

Ducky4143d ago (Edited 4143d ago )

@up2013

You don't have to spend too much time thinking. Cevat clearly says that it's the PC version which will be the benchmark in graphics for the next two years, kinda like how the first Crysis was.

(Unless if you're referring to Jinkies by 'he', in which case, his comment doesn't do much to counter Cevat's claim)

It's probably because you spelled hi as high... it's pretty heinous.

That aside, it's probably because you posted something stupid. My opinion is often controversial but usually well-thought out. I mean, I might love Playstation as a brand, but I'm not stupid enough to argue The Last of Us, as graphically superior to the likes of the PC version of Crysis 3.

I've lost a bubble a couple of times but it came back. Just make sure you say something intelligent every once in a while, I know that might sound hard.

yaz2884142d ago

the story of crysis 2 is so shit! annoying characters .. and it is just trying too hard.

I am actually disappointed with crysis 2 graphics .. the first one was better.

and also the physics (you were able to do some crazy stuff in crysis 1)

SnotyTheRocket4143d ago

@everyone Seriously? Whats more fun, Uncharted or Crysis? I'm not hating on PC, I own a decent one, and play on it. But the fact of the matter is, just don't find Crysis all that fun.

dredgewalker4143d ago

Crysis 2 might have looked good but I lost interest in it after playing it. Bragging about graphics is like making a super car that breaks the sound barrier but isn't fun to drive! A great game isn't all about the graphics, it has to have good balanced gameplay too.

Yep. Wait a couple of years and get this level of performance on a RTX 4070 or 4080 at a much lower price.

Killer73nova1277d ago

And wait a couple more years for rtx 5070 or 5080 at a much much lower price

Yung-T1278d ago (Edited 1278d ago )

That headline is a tad misleading.
The rig stated in that YouTube video is extremely high-end (ryzen 3950x oc, 32gb etc) and utilizing special water-cooling solutions, loops with pumps etc.

This rig easily costs 5k+ and a normal pc with a RTX 3090 wouldn't get close to these framerates or sustainable temperatures.

Aggesan1278d ago

Who has a "normal" pc with a RTX 3090?

Yung-T1278d ago (Edited 1278d ago )

There's still a difference between a high-end GPU+CPU and a custom-made water cooling system including a Waterloop&pumps etc though, it allows for much higher performance due to the better temperature management that would fry the GPU&CPU with normal builds.

lonewolf101278d ago

That's why people need to read the articles, most headlines are just to get you to click.

Rainbowcookie1277d ago

You would think yes, but honestly does it happen often 🤣 enough

I_am_Batman1278d ago (Edited 1278d ago )

Most of the threads of the 3950x were barely utilized and none of the games that were tested allocated more than ~12.5GB of system memory. Gaming at 8k is pretty much as GPU bound as you can get so you won't need a water cooled high-end CPU or 32GB of memory.

Psychotica1278d ago (Edited 1278d ago )

And where else can you run them in 8K or even in 4K with the same level of performance?

averagejoe261277d ago

Who cares? Nobody has 8k screens and the majority don't even have 4k screens.

This push for pointless high resolution is ruining progress. Give us better framerates, lighting, physics, etc. Stop wasting power on needles 8k.

lonewolf101277d ago

Bender65021278d ago

And still we can't escape 30fps.

JCOLE131951278d ago

I mean given the fact the games are running at 8K it doesn’t surprise me...

MrDead1277d ago

DLSS 2.0 no doubt has a big part in this too, The Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn and Death Stranding run like a dream on my 3080, 4k ultra set to 60fps no drops or stutters and the system runs very quiet. Playing Borderlands 3 on badass settings, Red Dead or Division 2 on 4k ultra all run great (Red Dead has a few drops below 60fps) but my PC is working a lot harder on games that don't utilise DLSS, my room warms up nicely when playing those games.
