Playing violent video games for just 20 minutes a day can encourage aggressive behaviour

University students were asked to play a violent video game or a driving game over three days

They were then set a couple of tests to see how they reacted to the outside world

Those who played shoot-em-ups like Call of Duty were more likely to assume the world was hostile and react aggressively

A little disclaimer to the Non UK readers. This is the Daily Mail so it is unlikely this study was that significant. Its the DM after all. Also mind the comments. They tend to be idiotic.

"We would know more if we could test players for longer periods of time, but that isn't practical or ethical." Well there you go. There may not be a long term impact

Listen to this man, the Daily Mail is a long running joke here in the UK.

They once had the headline "Murder by PlayStation" because apparently, a kid played Manhunt and then proceeded to take a hammer to to his mates head and kill him.

As it turns out, the game was actually played by the victim not the assailant. The police repeatedly tried to clarify that point but would the Daily Mail listen? Nope. No apology was ever published or even clarification issued. The damage was already done.

So, don't take this so called study to heart because if you do, and you happen to see a violent gang of thugs beat someone to death, then you have no option other than to believe that there is a high probability that you witnessed clan xNoScopezx take out their frustration after playing COD twenty minutes earlier.

(I approved this by mistake- for that, I apologise).

I remember that manhunt incident it happened in a park if I'm not mistaken and I also remember that it was the victim that played the game. I loved manhunt and these guys were one of the big reasons were probably never getting manhunt 3 or bully.

This also reminds me of That incident were this guy commited a grotesque murder and blamed in on resident evil!! Lol the article was here on n4g.

It may be the Daily Mail is nothing short of a tabloid, but the study exists and the Daily Mail didn't misrepresent it's findings as far as I can tell.

Those who read to the end will find that researches believe the effects would hit a ceiling and then level off. People wouldn't become more and more aggressive the more violent games they play.

This shouldn't surprise anyone. There have been numerous studies since the 60's that showed a link between television violence and an increase in aggressive behaviour. Why would videogames be any different?

The end result of those studies was to recommend moderating aggressive TV programs for children under 8 while the brain is still developing. They found an important link between heavy, aggressive TV viewing habits and serious criminal behaviour much later in life. Apparently, kids under 8 "have not yet developed enough abstract thinking to be able to evaluate what they see and measure it against reality." They're still in the "sponge" stage of brain development.

Kids into their adolescence showed increased aggressive behaviour like anyone else but no long term effects. That's pretty much what we're seeing reflected in this study as well. So, if there's any parents of kids's under 8 out there like me you might want to do a bit more research.

I can't think that anyone else would care. Except those looking for an excuse to demonize videogames for corrupting our youth. Like they did with comic books. Then D&D. Then morning cartoons. Then heavy metal. Then rap. Then videogames. Won't someone please think of the children?

If it's any kind of mainstream publication, you can expect a lot of bias.

Hearing Christmas music for eight hours a day at work makes me a tad edgy. Doing that for 5 days makes me...psychotic perhaps is the best word? Or maybe just very annoyed. The games help take the edge off.

"Hearing Christmas music for eight hours a day a"
TELL ME ABOUT IT
Worse thing ever at Work really, and very annoying when you get off and go someone, just to hear the same stuff again.

Myst4151d ago

Yep! just got off and that's pretty much all I hear. So now I have to drown my ears in other things to prepare for tomorrow.

masturbating with death grip might be harmful too, yet well never know...

OneAboveAll4151d ago

Good, let the hate and aggressive behaviour flow through me. Video Games are an outlet to let off steam. Would you rather me kill people on a video game? Or run through the streets?

:p

Watching day time tv for 20 minutes can also encourage aggressive behaviour, how about driving your car through London? that really does "encourage aggressive behaviour"

Iike it reads it the title, "can" encourage aggressive behaviour........"if your a weak minded individual"

EKWB reportedly plagued with financial disarray many gaming pc's left without parts

EK Cooling allegedly has slipped itself into a hot soup of seemingly endless financial woes, where it has not paid its staff, suppliers, and contractors for many months as the company is facing liquidity problems and a surplus of inventory left unsold, stuck in the warehouse for a more extended period. Gamers Nexus investigated these claims made by former and current personnel, where he found trails of unpaid bills lasting as long as three to four months and unpaid raises that accumulated for almost a year.

EK Water Blocks has two entities—a Slovenian-based headquarters and a US-based subsidiary, EK Cooling Solutions. Steve narrated the series of events in detail, stating that the company was reportedly irresponsible and negligent regarding payment. Consequently, partners and employees are forced to share the burden of alleged mismanagement. It all begins with its extensive range of products, leading to a surplus of goods. EK has over 230 water blocks, 40 liquid cooling kits, 85 reservoirs, 40 pumps, 73 radiators, and 212 miscellaneous accessories.

Yes this is not about video games directly but indirectly this will impact the pc gaming/workstation space hard.

This company is massive one of two in the water cool space so if it goes poof then thousands out there have no spare parts or half built computers.

SO yeah i know not about a video game but think of it as amd leaving the pc space but this is ekwb that could be leaving water cooling in the pc space

As someone that has built a watercooling rig. EK is big, but there's so many numerous watercooling part companies out there. EK's stuff isn't exactly amazing quality for the price compared to others either, it's just ok. Much like Corsair. The impact would be negligible long term. For perspective the majority of my parts are XSPC, at most I use EK for my gpu waterblocks and fittings. Both easily replaceable.
